Hi everyone, this is from a hardcore wow gamer who is thinking about coming to this purdy looking game. First id like to know 3 factors that will keep people playing for more then a week and also is it worth coming from wow and playing or will I not like it at all? Should I stay on wow and gear up for cataclysm or switch to this to add more fun to my MMORPG gaming experience?

Thou hast asked a hard thing. But I will give it a shot. No you will probably want to wait till Cataclysm to come out If you are looking for a WoW experience you will not find it here, but if you are interested in trying something different with an Old School MMO feel ( ala... EverQuest, Ultima Online, Final Fantasy XI) then you might find this game appealing.
First off level progression is slow; The game is more about the experience and less about leveling.
Secondly this is not a Solo friendly game. While it is true you can do the LeveQuests on your own they are really designed to encourage grouping.
Thirdly you will not find a more complex and demanding crafting system in any other MMORPG period. What I mean is that everything is codependent of another crafting class(this game really wants you to group up).
Now the game does have some issues: it has a really awkward UI, it is pretty unforgiving in that it contains practically no tutorial, because the game is so graphic intensive some people will have a hard time getting it to run on their system, and lastly it does have some mild bug and lag issues. All in all this is a good game. Does it need work? Yes, but every MMO is like a rough diamond when it launches, but with the money and man power that SE has there is little doubt that they will continue to build on this solid title.

Short answer is no.
Long answer is this game is largely incomplete. There are only 8 quests you can do every 2 days. You have to depend on gear made by players, but since there is no worldwide chat channel, and no auction house, finding mats or gear is made VERY hard. The UI is terribly laggy, but it's really just for casters for the most part from what I've seen. So, if you like to grind, do the same 8 quests every 48 hours until you level out of an area, and the huge pain in the ass that is the crafting system, this game might be for you. If not, don't tell anyone here, because they'll just tell you to "go back to WoW" because this game "Doesn't hold your hand (broken)", and the bad UI/terrible mechanics is a "depth of dificulty that WoW players can't understand". It is a VERY pretty game though. If you were into AoC or AION at launch, you may like it. Both were pretty with barely any substance.
Good analysis and now im starting to see the feel and gameplay of this game. It seems like wow when you get to 80 you head up to argent place everyday and complete the 5-10 dailies over and over again.

The only people I can see playing this game for the next six or so months while SE fixes their broken game is the hardcore fans of the franchise. The UI/menu/everything lag makes me rage endlessly. On top of the lag, you get to navigate through menu after menu after menu to do simple things. Want to sell an item?
Walk to where an NPC is.
Wait for 10-15 seconds while the NPC loads.
Double click on the NPC.
Wait another 10 seconds.
Select the "sell" option.
Wait 15-30 seconds for your unsortable inventory window to come up.
Select the item you want to sell.
Click the sell button.
Wait for 15-30 seconds.
Click the sell button again.
Wait for 15-30 seconds.
Continue this process for every item you want to sell.
This is standard gameplay outside of combat. Combat is a bit different. You select an enemy, and spam the shit out of three hotkeys. You can do 16 quests per day. 8 for crafting and 8 for battle. Don't even think about trying to find an item in the market wards. You will rage. Basically, the UI lag/redundant over-complex shit has sucked all of the fun out of the game. The, "this game isn't for you" line just doesn't work anymore. This game isn't for anyone. Who can even start to see the core mechanics and design when the game is covered by a shit UI that lags everytime you attempt to do something.
So, no don't play this game yet. You will be paying for open open beta.
Let me offer some counterpoint since you want to know whether to get this game:
-This game has little to do with Everquest or Ultima Online. The first was full of fantastic quests, fully realized roles and huge areas to explore, a requisite on grouping, full of all sorts of secrets. FFXIV has one meh quest and a ton of generic randomly generated quests, no real player interactions(guildleves in groups are actually more time consuming and less rewarding that solo) and a chat/grouping system based off of keeping players apart. Ultima Online is an even further deviation as it was a sandbox game with a living breathing world where a single player's interaction would often cause the game world to change in all sorts of ways, FFXIV is about as static as one could possibly imagine, the mobs don't even wander around in paths larger than a few meters. And whereas Richard Garriott and the developers would frequently show up in game and make fun things happen, in FFXI you don't even get a forum to complain on(if that's not a warning sign, I don't know what is).
-It's not solo friendly but it's not group friendly. Grouping is encouraged in words only, the system benefits solo more often than not. There are mobs that you will need a group to take down but you are really better off just ignorning them. The system for finding a group is well...there isn't one. Did I mention the chat system seems to be built around trying to keep players from talking to one another, might have something to do with their lousy server load(see server side lag).
-The crafting is fun if you have the materials however that's where demanding comes into play. Instead of being able to easily find them, you have to play the "search the random player shops game" to find what you need. Trust me, it sucks on a level not yet reached by any game.
-It has issues. It has ui lag, a poorly optimized graphics engine, serverside lag, menus on top of menus on top of menus on top of menus to do something simple, min/maxing, no group dynamics, boring, generic quests that are given out in the most retarded way imaginable, milktoast zones, slow paced combat, a crappy chat system, huge areas with little content, a static world. About the only way this game is old-school is that it completely ignores every single improvement that has been introduced to mmo's in the last fifteen years. It's like Squaresoft rounded up a bunch of developers who'd never coded a game in their life and never played an mmo then told them to make the game from ground up with no knowledge about the genre. It's like they tried to make everquest, except that would be a slight to the designers of Everquest as they, still to this day, have a more cutting edge game than FFXIV is. It's not Old School, it's the freaking Preschool. And don't buy into the crap about every mmo being behind the curve on launch, every mmo that launches is not a rough diamond. There are some that come out fully baked and just get better, see GW, EQ2,FFXI, Aion and City of Heroes(then Villians) all launched smoothly and fully functioning. Then there are the unpolished games that launch with issues that get better like AO, EQ1 and Eve Online. But that last category is for those dirt covered turds, once you wipe away the dirt, all that's left is crap: Dark and Light, Star Trek Online, Asheron's Call 2 and now, introducing what has to be the biggest letdown in mmo history FFXIV. Don't get me wrong, the game's going to get better in time and SE will improve it even if noone's playing it but the question is ultimately, why would you pay to play a game in this state?
This is possibly the weakest entry of all the Final Fantasy games including the numerous spinoffs. I booted up Chocobo dungeon the other day and even it has more thought behind the design of the game.
The only reason to buy this game is because you are a Final Fantasy Completist. If that sounds like you, go for it. If not, my advice is stay away for at least a few months while they try and add a game to all of the pretty pictures.
I played the beta and did not like the game at all. Yet they have made and will make better changes. But buy it. For the price you get 30 free days to play and that is so worth it. That is the best thing..
Dont, get a buddy key: you have to know someone unfortunate enough to waste their money on this game. Or wait for the free trial, they had one for FFXI shortly after launch, they'll probably have one for this game because, let's face it, if they(being the SE execs) thought that it was a smart business move to launch a game clearly in something resembling a Mid to late Alpha state, than they aren't smart enough to know that previewing said game will result in less revenue.
As far as I know. Even at lvl 80 there are THousands of quests to do other than doing dailys. Now if you achieved Lormaster which basicly means doing just about every single quests in classic, bc and northrend then yes you will end up suck doing a few of the random dailys that are out there.
Or you can roll the other faction and Bam thousands and thousands of more quests to do.
well on topic. Id say give the game some more time. wait atleast till they manage to deal with the lag. It is a different experience than the one your used to.
Yes it is a very fun game, will be a very different experience for you . Some people like to play the same mmoprgs for ages though. It's all good sometimes I play multiple. I personally like to experience them all. I've played tons but this for sure one of favorites of all time. It does have lag issue , but that because game has tons of people an UI causes tons of lag. not a really big buggy game though. just outpost crowder with 50+ people all the time an the traffic in the game is like ants all over the place. Expect the launch probs. After all that has passes you can expect a good longterm adventure with SE. It is a JRPG so the style of it is a turn based combat which is much faster than all of there previous turn based versions i notice in combat. people do say ts slow an different but if so lets see you be fast an kick ass in a 3-5 star group without dying lol. aint that slow you can still get your ass kicked before you press the button ^^. it does get deep in combat an this game wont take 5 mins to rush to the top as previously posted because theres more too it than that. The crafting here is an entire economy which players help build. This all gets fun with a cool linkshell all working together. I always found FF series a mystery...very explorative an biggest maps ive ever seen.
If you like crafting a lot then you may like this game since crafting is a huge part and more involved then in WOW.However, there is no recipe book so you have to guess what mats make what or look up online. There is no AH or organized marketplace yet.The UI is laggy so it takes forever to craft. To make something you need mats from every crafting profession, so you need to level them all or try and buy mats from someone. If you mainly just like fighting, then it depends.
If you expect lots of towns and camps with nps that give quests with story lines and more then generic "kill x mob quests" and lots of dungeons to group in and PVP, then you will hate this game.If you like grinding 100's of mobs in a cave to level with the occasional storyline quest every 10 levels, then you may like this game.
Also, if you like grouping a lot, then you won't like this game, as it's largely a solo experience at the moment.Party xp is messed up so it's far faster soloing, and healers don't gain skill points for healing. You must be at the person to invite to group and party members don't show up on your map, only on your minimap. The chat system is annoying and there is no universal chat, so it may be hard to communicate unless you are in a linkshell. There is no LFG system in place either.
