Comparing the current playerbase to January 2010, I'd say there's less players now. Perhaps tomorrow's Expac will bring back a lot of players, we'll see.

are there still active things hapenning ?

The game has been dead in terms of players for months now, as for politics... it's still alive, but nothing compared to what it use to be.  Where there were 100+ clans fighting for territory there are now maybe 10 that matter anymore.  Even less that hold any of the "good" holdings.  An active clan of 20 or less people can now hold onto many holdings, it's a joke and a damned shame it has turned out this way.

So is the server dead? That's a matter of opinion... mine is yes.  Both ploitcally and player-base wise

I just  bought  Darkfall   on Friday  and  have  played maybe 8  hours total. I have  run into a few people  here and there  but  very little activity in any of the chat windows. I'm  going to play thru the 30  trial, but  not sure if  I will play for it  any longer then that.

Now imagine all the starter towns.. and NPC main cities teeming with life and you were seeing people EVERYWHERE, would that make you stay?  After having spent so much time in the game since EU launch I've come to the conclusion the game is only a good game when there are others around.  Right now in the game there are only two levels of people.  One, the new guys that don't have maxed out stats and the vets, people with all the current OP skils and base stats.

Let me repeat that, the game WAS fun, however that was before the player-gap skill wise became so great... back when there was a more even spread of people across the board it was perfect.  I wish AV could find that perfect balance so that people are not forced into the one current build there is for pvp.

If the game was actually that fun it would have sustained a critical population to keep it fun no?

The gap between new players and veteran is mostly what 'killed' the game and made the great majority of DarkFall players leave. Also the fact that you have to AFK macro to reach the "viable" point faster and play for 15 hours a day, 7 days a week.

DF politics is fun thing. You've got a clan of 20 actives, and when you siege them, 70+ from that clan show up, like in the case of last SUN siege.

Good luck sieging any of other clans with 20 actives. If the clan really has 20 actives and mine, it won't hold it for longer than 2 weeks.

Over a weekend I've played 16 hours, mainly PvE to earn gold for siege, killed 4 guys by myself, and died 2 times. Nevertheless I'm still "inactive" according to df.urme.com ...

Most PvP free for all games tend to suffer like this because at some point the player base matures and the new players are unable to compete. This is a natural cycle that exist even in nature so it is hardly surprising that numbers dwindle.

    LOL BS.

That is such an exaggeration . .. nobody plays for 15hrs a day, 7 days a week. If they did, they would become viable in 1 month and pass up most of the server in 2. Without the use of macroing.

I have always played 2-3 hours at a time only a few times a week and it has never held me back. If you are falling behind, just group up with some friends and you will be fine.

Yes, the population is fine. It will boom after tomorrows expansion and then again after DF2010s expansion and then again when they box the game for US shelves and put it on steam which is happening after DF2010 is working well.

People that defend the grind and ridiculous repetitiveness are just.. honestly I really don't know why you and others do this. Most likely something to do with people not being good enough to be on the same competitive level as others at some reasonable point. I play DF, and common sense shows the population is low and has become low because of the fact you cannot compete that soon. If you could compete within 2 month's the game would have a MUCH higher population than it currently does.

That said, it is possible within 2-3  month's to be competitive only if you use macros or AFK skill gains. It's really not hard to look back to when DF had close to 180k subs at launch, and then it dropped down to current numbers within a year. Just looking at past threads of reasons people left gives a good hint..

I mean I play about roughly 3-4 hours a day, and a bit more on days off. I still am not competitive after 4 month's of play unless I am in a group(even then all I can freaking do is heal others, and if someone targets me I die within about 6 hits or so). I have worked on all things, including grinding for hours on rigor(most boring time in DF and it actually made me unsub for a few month's). I currently still do not have the GA mastery, nor do I have very good spells(GM is around 25). The only thing I am good at is crafting(100 tailor, 60 weaponsmith/armor), and archery(have all masteries for this to at least 80).

    It never had 180k subs.

But anyway, all MMOs peak at launch. Darkfall has had a way lower population than it currently has and is on a rise. The reason why there are "less" influential clans is simply that the players have settled a bit since release.

population and a game like this is a touchy thing.

To many people and then new players leave because they cant get enough breathing space to build their character without getting ganked. To few people and there is nobody to hunt.

That said, if you select the server that works best for your timezone reports I have heard from both servers is that you should not have any trouble finding groups to play with and people to hunt.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Looking at Lineage 2, that is not entirely true. Clans would form for the sole purpose of defending new players, it was a very good thing for the community and even helped many players not to leave the game and keep playing.  DarkFall doesn't have much of that, yet, probably caused by the low population that the game currently suffers of. Perhaps if the community would grow once again to what it once was a launch, or something close to that, we'd see a lot more clans like this. (Although I believe BOA do defend their newbs, not sure)

    Solutions are three:

    - EVE like Empire space where FFA is possible but law breakers are dealed with swiftly by AI guards.

    - no grind based character progression.

    - FPS game approach where with the time you aquire more abilities ( skills, spells etc ) and equipment but damage, HP wise everyone is equal ( think CoD: Modern Warfare, Bad Company 2 etc )

We know that is not going to happen in DF and that's why it is going to slowely lose its already small player base.

This game was supposed to be a mix of Morrowind, Counter Strike with Civilization, but turned out to be Quake with grind and a too big unpopulated map. Sad but true.

Been fine for me, my clan had many big battles between Jan and now. I hope the wow crowd who tried DF don't come back for this latest expansion, I really don't want to hear their qq how hard DF is for them.

What i wonder about is where to player go after?

I try to visualize a player who gets into darkfall and plays for a week and then says '*** this I am going to go play ___ instead' I have a hard time with the blank part of the sentence. I am not saying DF is perfect but I am saying the game play blows away anything else I have played in the MMO universe.

I quit the game because they should have done a server wipe after the exploiters attained Max level after roughly one month using a lightning tower and acid pool glitch to max rigor. It's true the only way to be competitive in this game at all is to spend countless hours macroing afk. Why waste time finding and grinding up on monsters when you can just afk swim under the dock, or have guildmates beat on you while you are afk? Not to mention the hackers had almost taken over during the early days. Oh boy a guy just came up from underground and is stuck to my back hitting me.

DF never had 180 k subs. I would be surprised if it ever sold 30 k of copies.

Your game experience is really similar to mine and many others I know who left. Despite fact that DF pvp is really fun at times, the whole game just doesn't offer enough fun and offers way to much chore. As I said before AV still lives in year 2007, player expectations have changed since then, grind doesn't classify as game content anymore.

That's why I look forward to Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet seems to understand the meaning of fun and quality.

I will leave FPS combat for FPS games, at least I don't need to spend hours gathering materials for one set of medicore gear.

Like I have posted before what I have the most trouble understanding in some of these posts from people whoo dont play anymore or dont like the game is what are they playing instead.

I just can not imagine leaving DF to play say WoW for example, that just blows my mind.

I can only speak for myself, but unfortunately I am not playing anything at the moment. Darkfall is the only MMO that I have really enjoyed over the past couple years. I just can't get into any of the other ones.

Unfortunately I just don't have the patience to make it through Darkfall's grind. I then tried EVE online again, but I find that game to be very boring in many ways. So, for now I am again just waiting for another MMO that I will really enjoy and am playing games like Starcraft 2 and Civ 5 in the meantime. Darkfall was very very close to my perfect game. Had it not been for the massive grind and various other tedious aspects, I would probably play it for years...

Haha, my friends just said "**** this" and left.

But I`m not surprise of the Darkfall failure, it was expected. When you`ve played mmo for more than a decade, you got a feeling on what will work. The fluff AV is putting in this patch wont help when the core of the game is broken. The three things AV should have focused on from the start was (and still is) the grind to get pvp competitive, alignment and the UI. Nothing will help untill those three things are fixed.

You should be far, far more advanced than this at 3-4 hours / day and 4 months.  You do not need to macro but you do need to focus on one skill at a time.  Then also pay attention to things that will speed you up like hunting tougher mobs as a group and using haste spells.
