Since I get tired of all negative people, I thought lets make a topic for people who do like it. I know most of us are playing FFXIV and are too busy to write here. (I just died so I have a few minutes)
I started at 23 september (I did play also in closed beta and open beta), I tried many classes and I like them all! I really find it hard to decide what I want to play.
My highest rank is rank 11 Marauder, and I think I will focus on Marauder.
I love Bloodbath + Felocity (Lancer) + Skull sunder! Last night I did over 300 damage and got around 250 hp from it. I also have Second Wind equipt, I guess almost everyone has that skill . I also use Shock spikes a lot, it make life so much easier.
I first decided to change Shock spikes in stoneskin, but somehow I find shock spikes better. My last skill is cure, I don't use it often, only when I go into the yellow. (Usually when I get an unexpected 2nd enemy)
Since rank 10 I also started to do rank 10 guildleve, and they are way more challenging and fun to do. I really feel great with my Marauder.
When my guild leves are used and my friends are not online, then I usually challenge myself. Trying to keep killing as quick as possible without a visit at the crystal.
Or tring to kill a group of mobs. Or just 1 hard enemy. Yeah I die a lot, but I don't mind that. Fun is more important then XP. I dislike grinding, I refuse to kill enemies just to get a next rank, when I notice I only want my next rank I switch classes and challenge myself again.
I am also busy with crafting quests, I noticed it is a good way to get XP, and maybe someday I can create something. But crafting does look hard, you need so many things, even for an low level arrow. But maybe that's the best way, this way people who prefer crafting won't get much competition of other people, I think.
For the rest I am busy with the main quest of Gridania, which I really like. I now need rank 15 for the next quests. I really like the story, and I must admit I already spoiled myself with some video's, I can't wait to go on with the story.
So more people who enjoy the game, and what do you like about this game till now?
Anyway, I am going to play FFXIV again!

Despite my criticism of the game, I think given a year or so it could be amazing. It's just not right now. I still have fun in short spurts, but I just can't get too enthused about it yet. As soon as they fix input lag and the market wards I'll be a happy gamer. There's a lot of little issues that get in the way of the game imo.
I am playing a Marauder too. There's always been something I liked about the hulking juggernaut class wielding big two handers, and so far Marauder fits the role nicely. You should pick up Raging Strikes from rank 4 Archer when you have the action points to fit it in. It stacks with Bloodbath and Ferocity. Big numbers.
Two of my biggest gripes are the lack of things to see while exploring and the crafting system. I found a cool tower in a field, but couldn't go the whole way up it. There's just not much to see for the explorer. No little houses or villages to explore. Limsa Lomina needs a huge ass lighthouse on the coast for me to go and climb up. I don't know... the world just feels somewhat sterile to me. It's stunning at first, but after playing for awhile I can never tell where I am on the map because there's simply no recognizable landmarks.
Crafting is just such a pain right now. Between the input lag and trying to find items in the wards to actually be able to make something of use, it's not worth it for me. It's too much trouble. Not only that, but if you want to be self-sufficent you have to branch out to at least three, in some cases, four other crafts. Co-dependancy to a certain point is fine, but when a rank 11 recipe takes rank 20 items from another craft then something is wrong. It's just dumb design imo. With the amount of time it takes to craft a single item, it's just not fun. The prolbem is that you are almost forced into crafting. RIght now I just do my 8 local leves on my armourer. I figure once I reach 15 or so I'll switch to another craft.
What server are you on?
I find the mentality of people on this site increasingly difficult to understand and I am generally visiting and reading less and less.
I've played countless MMOs, mostly from lauch, and time and time again there is this ridiculous uproar about the failings of any game. FFXIV is not a perfect game, this is true, but the constant stream of negativity seems bizarre to me on a site which is supposedly visited by fans of the genre.
There are a lot of things to applaud FFXIV for. I am enjoying the game loads and will be logging back in just as soon as I finish this post.
I cannot be bothered to write lots, because haters will try to pick holes in my viewpoint. But I just want to remind any readers trying to look at this game objectively that there are lots of us that think this game (overall) is excellent. If you want to find out more then visit a site like FFXIVcore. Yes it is somewhat biased in favour of the game but you'll find out more than you will on this site.
I'm afraid that MMORPG.com is fast becoming a club of deluded pessimists that imagine the perfect game in their minds and focus on the negative points in the games they play (very briefly). I'm starting to believe that the majority of posters on this site really need to find themselves an alternative hobby , because they clearly don't like this one.
FFXIV is not perfect. But I still like it.
See you in game.
To crosspost a fairly comprehensive set of reasons I posted elsewhere (which it seems like a waste since it was largely ignored in the thread it was posted in)...
Part of the reason why I'm quick to say "this game isn't for you" so often is because I'm keenly aware of my own backdrop had a lot to do with the reason why I like FFXIV:
I've been a computer gamer for 26+ years, and during this time I've become unusually selective about the kinds of games I like, a connosseiur who will like games that people new to games will snub, while snubbing games that may be popular to more mainstream sentiments. For example, World of Warcraft entertained me for all of four weeks before I completely exhausted what I found unique about the game from the dozens of EverQuest clones before it. Tried to start playing it again a few times, but I never could really get into it. It's too derivative. Too easy. To me, World of Warcraft sucks.
Being a computer gamer for 26+ years also has made me unusually adaptive to games since I've played so many I've had lots of practice getting used to different interfaces. Some people are complaining Final Fantasy XIV's interface hurdle is insurmountably bad, but it's a walk in the park compared to some games I've played and enjoyed.
I've played a little Final Fantasy XI, and I really enjoyed how immersive and well-balanced it was, with an unusual amount of depth to be found in things such as the renkai system, but I felt that I was a bit late to the party, what's new content for me in that game would be old hat to everybody else, I think that boat has sailed. So part of the reason why I'm getting into Final Fantasy XIV is recognizing that here is a chance for me to get in on the ground floor of a game created by the same people.
Then you get into the actual individual features of the game and contextualize this against the kind of fellow I am, and then you have a greater understanding of how I feel about them.
Great multimedia: This feature, which many will say is the best thing the game has goign for it, is worthless to me. Nearly. While a gamer such as myself doesn't care much for skin-deep beauty, it does, at least, provide an indicator of general quality to come, and sometimes has a purpose beyond looking pretty.
Immersive environment: Here's a situation in which the great multimedia does have a purpose beyond looking pretty, it actually contributes to creating a sense of a living, breathing world. Granted, the mob variety is lacking a bit, but it's not hard to imagine there's more to it than the few wandering mobs.
It does a lot of things differently: When you're tired of playing clone after clone after clone, this is a big positive.
Player-driven economy balance/sophistication: To have a player-driven economy is easy. Much harder is to have a player-driven economy balanced in such a way as to have almost every item in the game carry a heavy significance, to actually make it difficult to create these items (as opposed to the WoW model: insert items and push button for success), and to have the circulation of said items to be a major factor of gameplay... FFXIV is already partway there, as they get closer to realizing this "battle market" system I expect we'll see the rest.
Good player flow design: It occurs to me that Vanguard had a lot of this kind of stuff, but one thing Vanguard did not have is a good balance of player flow. Their world was too big for too many players. An MMORPG which is mostly lacking a means to meet other players is no MMORPG. FFXIV is designed with lots of little meeting hubs (cities/camps) so you'll never short on access to other players. The balance is not group-centric like FFXI, true, but you can nonetheless find players to solicit to group and they'll usually comply because grouping doesn't really hurt (I expect balance to be tipped more in grouping's favor soon).
One character does everything: One thing about being a picky ancient gamer such as myself is that it often frustrates me how MMORPGs hide part of their games behind the hurdle of having to start a new character completely over from scratch. FFXIV, like FFXI, does not do this. I can alt around like mad and be rewarded for it. This feature alone is something FFXIV has that most MMORPGs don't.
The barrier of entry: Some people might just figure I'm being flippiant when I say that it's just as well the GUI is so different and/or ponderous because it creates a barrier of entry that scares away folks with less intelligence (to figure out a new GUI) or patience (to deal with a slower interface). I'm actually being serious, this is something FFXI had going for it (less ponderousness, more differentness), and FFXIV looks to be following suit. It's really annoying to deal with idiots in MMORPGs, and FFXIV's barrier of entry has helped to foster a community which shows a marked improvement over the typical dregs you can find in a more casual-friendly game. Harsh but true.
Great potential: Knowing what Square-Enix has done to FFXI, and knowing that it started out in a similar state as FFXIV has now, I see the placeholders in the game (such as airship ramps/stations and chocobos) as exactualy what they are: placeholders for awesome future content. Developer interviews are certainly indicating a lot is on the way.
Hear, hear. Seriously, is it me, or is opening the floor to detraction just opening up a giant hole of dissention between those who like and dislike the game? That's in a good scenario, in a poor scenario it's just creating a troll haven. I'm mostly annoyed because when I get provoked by unabashed negative sentimentality I end up holding the bag by the moderators, so from my perspective it seems the house bias is on the side of the haters.
I may have more to comment on later, but right now, the biggest thing I like is the ability to use potions on other people and poison potions on enemies. It makes alchemy seem very useful. Well that, and I can't wait for Musketeer so I can feel like an old School FFTactics Chemist.
I am definetly enjoying the game, i especially enjoy the graphics, and yes it is a bit laggy and somewhat frustrating waiting on people/NPCs to load, but I keep in mind it is release and that makes everything ok to me.
The community is great, so far, and have found many friendly people to PuG with.
I have been playing a Thaum (lvl 9 at the moment) as well as gladiator (5) and conjurer (5) and have gathered some, but have yet to craft.
I went exploring yesterday and found some mine area north of drybone camp in the desert starting area. The mobs promptly handed my taru but to me, but it was fun and exciting non the less.
I play on Fabul server myself. Heres to a good future! cheers!
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
Wooooo! People enjoying a game! It's always nice to see around here. Hope it keeps you hooked for many years to come.:)
People enjoying XIV? MADNESS!!!
EDIT: I have rescinded by comments below as I have explained in comment #21 of this thread.
I'll tell you what. I am loving FFXIV more than any other mmo that I have tried in the last 3 years. Right now, I just can't get enough of it. I love that there is no tutorial and handholding. I'm loving the ability to change classes. I am loving the fact that I can't simply target a mob and know everything about it. I am loving the Bazarr (yes, it needs a search function) and the fact that I can buy and sell right from individuals out in the wilderness. I could go on with the things I love about this game, but that is enough.
I don't want a broker / auction house system. All the broker system in EQ2 did was drive down the price of everyones crafted items so you had to either dump them at a vendor or sell them for less than what you paid to make them. I love the mystery of not knowing what the going rate of items are. I am always looking to see what people are selling and I am actually getting a good idea of what the going rates are without a broker or auction house.
Granted, this game needs many little tweeks here and there. I can't for the life of me figure out why there is no /reply. It is driving me crazy. And SE needs to take a serious look at streamlining many of the menus to eliminate unnecessary button presses. Just opening a merchant screen to buy an item takes 3 button presses. It should be done in 1.
But for me, I think the positives of this game greatly outweight the negatives, and I can see myself playing this game for a long time to come.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
^^ This is exactly where i am at the moment too. I love playing FFXIV, and when I'm not at work thats where I am. As for MMORPG, well I have pretty much given up hope on the community here already. I read it a little and respond a little but for the most part I'm already moved on to other less negative forums that are more productive to the gaming environment than this place has become. MMORPG forums seem to have become the home of people who dont like any game and only wish to argue as a form of fun while they wait around for the next best thing. I prefer forums that are open to debate and not rabid hatred for the sake of hate itself.
But yeah, to anyone still out there thinking all these negative posts on these forums are indicative of the game itself, well its not. These negative posts are only indicative of the people on these forums. There are plenty of us who think this game is great and are enjoying playing it every minute we can. It may have its minor issues here and there, but the good parts far out weigh them in my opinion.
And same as above - see you in game.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
It is so nice to hear for a change that people are enjoying this game I am and everytime I log in the A-crystals are packet with people its awesome! And the crafting leve's quest areas which im focusing on are always popular hang out spots to chat with people its really is nice to hear people are enjoying this game soooo much!
i think in general if people had played ff11 they know what to expect, they got what they expect and they are (mostly) happy. this includes me, though they HAVE to get the AH and chat improvements in place.
if ppl never ever played 11, then they are hitting culture shock and they realise the game isnt their cup of tea.
it's fine until bth groups come here and forums break out :]
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I agree completely. I have found myself coming to these forums less and less over the past few months. It has turned into nothing but a troll den.
Anyway, I'm loving FFXIV. Brings back all of the good memories of FFXI when it was new to me. It has it's faults but it has more potential than any game out right now.
I only played the game for about a week or two (while it was in Open Beta) oddly though a lot say the game is bad, i actually enjoyed it. According to them I must like bad games (i don't think this one is bad though, i've played some pretty bad games in my life). While i feel the game could use some improvement it's still enjoyable overall.
The interface may be difficult to get at first but so was my first Playstation controller. I try to understand the interface. Once i did it was almost as fast to get to my inventory as it was to press I. I tend to take posts about games with a grain of salt. I see alot of posts saying they hated the game cause it was too hard (i'm refering here to tough mobs being near easy ones, not the general use of the game) or it wasn't pointing things out to me. Frankly too many games have become too dang easy or too "we point you this way" so those people don't get lost. I remember playing fable 2, and i had to on purposely turn the guiding light off because i didn't want to know where i was suppose to be going, same went for Bioshock 2, these in my opinion should be turned off by default and turned on when your just completely lost and it's starting to ruin the fun of the game. But this is on by default so people don't get lost on the train that is the game. i remember when games required you to use that thing in your head to get good at it. Too many games are now, we don't want the player to lose, or get lost because they will get mad and not buy our products.
In the end, i feel this game is enjoyable, if all be it has some flaws, if i had any money i would buy the game and play it right along side of UWO, but i don't so sadly i can't get in.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
I'm enjoying the game as a whole. I started a few days ago and have gotten into a linkshell who has helped me get some gear, new sword and shield at no charge. I have no interest at all in crafting so I just donate all my crystals to the LS and everyone seems to be ok with that so far.
My only beef is with the market wards. I have faith they can work because I've seen them work in Asheron's Call. The players made the market halls the developers just gave us a better and more safe location. They work, I know they do the wards just need refinement. Giving each ward a specific purpose would help. Like if I'm looking for a weapon I would go to the blacksmith ward.
They're taking advantage of you!
overall i love the game. i just wish SE would address the whole market ward thing i know myself and some people in the game would like to see a EQ2 type AH to help with searching for items, and bring back mog housing! haha i know in time this game will grow and be awesome. part also wish they would have worked on it more before releasing it.
IN THE FACE!
This game is one game I want to pick up, the stuff people complain about it intreages me. I wanna play a game and not be hand holded, or play via keyboard only, atleast from what I gathered.. but alas rather wait for trial or buddy key first
no game will make everyone happy...but as long as the game makes you happy then play it..the more people they try to make appease the more it takes away from the original game idea...
Thank you all for your replies!
I have rank 7 archer so I should have that skill, I am going to try it out! Thanks for this information.
I am on the Besaid server Kashira Bastet.
Yes and no. I couldn't get into FFXI at all honestly and I'm loving XIV. But, maybe it's just my age/maturity/experience playing a role. FFXI I honestly couldn't figure anything especially the UI(got a little better after doing a few key binds but never got past it) and left during my free trial. First login to FFXIV I was on my way. The longest part for me was actually talking to all the characters making sure I didn't miss something before the first mob for the tutorial(?).
However I will admit I did quickly switch my game pad as well it is honestly easier(although I do with I was the keyboard for skills during fights as sometime I get lost after switching targets). And, to stay on topic I am enjoying FFXIV a lot and I'm going to try and be self sufficient but man the crafting makes it hard :P. Keeping steam open helps though so I can check recipes without having to close the game.
I am quoting myself, because quite frankly, I am embarrased to have written it. I officially rescind my statments above. The day after I wrote this I was smacked in the face with just how bad this game really is.
Me and 2 others were out doing some leves together. You know the ones I am talking about. The same 5 everyone has done 20 times over, because there are no other quests in the game. This one was one of the standard Naked Mole ones. Well, we arrived at our yellow circle and I could see our assigned group of 3 moles right in front of us. It was clear there were a few other groups doing the exact same leve in the exact same spot. There were quite a few moles and several players all huddled around the same little area.
Now keep in mind I use a gamepad which this game is clearly designed for. With all the characters on the screen, I quickly realized it was next to impossible to select the correct mob. I knew this was a problem before, but this particular instance was too much to bear. This selection problem is compounded by the fact that moles dig underground and the target lock is lost. It is further complicated by the fact that the names over mobs' heads turn red when aggroed by other players. I quickly got frustrated using the d-pad and having it cycle through every other character on the screen but the one I needed.
We eventually managed to kill 2 of the 3 moles, but the 3rd one fled. We gave chase. It ran to its spot and picked up 4 friends, which also happened to be in an area crowded with many characters. Our group of 3 was now being pounded on by 5 moles. The names for 2 of these moles were red, but the names for the other 3 were yellow. But, there were also red named moles in the area, that are not beating on us but are beating on other people.
The whole thing was just one big cluster bleep. Moles and people everywhere. Me furiously pressing my d-pad trying to find the correct mole to target. Yellow named moles attacking us. Red named moles attacking other people. Moles popping in and out of the ground. Two deaths later we managed to kill off the group, but the damage was done.
I soon logged off and I have not looked at this game the same since. I have logged back on a few times, but it has been more of a chore than fun. I filled up on 8 local leves. They were level 1, 5, and 10 leves. I could do some but to do others I had to run through one-shot kill mobs just to get to the camp. Spending 10 minutes of running just to get 100 feet from the camp, then one-shot killed and sent back to your starting point, just to do a few crafting leves is not my idea of fun.
In the 3 days since I wrote my original quote, I have come to realize just how flawed the mechanics of this game are. I have already changed my subscription from the 180 day selection to the 30 day selection. However, I am finding my will to log in less with each passing day, and I willl most likely be cancelling my sub completely at the end of the free 30 days.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
While I do agree with you on the targeting as I use an Xbox controller to play myself I think you are giving up a little too soon. All SE needs to do is work on making the Target Lock "smarter" which I'm sure they will given some time.
My theme song.
I love FF14!! Enough said ^^
