Though I am a bit surprised. Seeing Lich King release in China and a release date put on Cataclysm I suspect there are many who have come back to wow. It isn't like the last two years have produced a decent game to compete with wow. Until that happens I suspect it will just keep growing.
Do you know how many people play Farmville?
Numbers do not mean quality.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Wrath sold over 4 million copies in the first month (not avaliable in china at the time). Just as wrath out sold TBC... Cata will out sell Wrath.
As to accounts ever made I would say wow is easily over 100 million. But as the press release says 12 million active subs (as defined by blizz subscriber definition)... there is just no argument to make. /You can argue about blizz definition of a subscriber but blizzard are not making it up or fudging the numbers.. they are upfront about it... unlike other companies.
It is not normally ranked as one of the best Facebook games though...just the most populous.
Ah well, I guess you get a point when we want to discuss what is 'best' and what isn't, since it's all subjective. Though, of all MMO out there, World of Warcraft has the biggest piece of the pie, such as Farmville for games presented on Facebook. Those may not be the best games to our eyes, but a lot of consummers decided to stick with those over their alternatives.
Marketing ploy and nothing more. I like Blizzard but I'm not buying into this insanity they preach.
It's actually illegal to give false numbers like this, and have to prove it. At least in the US.
But i'll be the "fanboi" and say Congrats Blizzard, way to make a quality game that appeals to a wide audience.
And for those about to flame/troll me for calling WoW a quality game, 12 million subscribers pretty much trumps your arguement. And if it doesnt, LALALALA IM NOT LISTENING
Wait, didn't they announce 13 millions 2 years ago? If so, how is reaching 12 millions again a milestone?
Last I heard it was 11.5 mil. But I could of mist something.
I don't follow it closely as i aint a WoW player other than having dabbled for a few months a while ago but i do believe you're correct. I don't remember them ever announcing 13 million, i remember players saying 13mil but never blizzard. Just my memory mind you, i'm sure some avid follower will dispute that.
I'd like to know how many of the 12 million are NA and EU.
I'd like to know how many of these so called 12 mil player's accounts are actually still active and being payed on.
I still have my account, just in case Blizzard might actually do something great with this game agin, some day. But I stopped using/paying on it about 2 years ago...
As for WoW being bigger than Belgium... WoW has more than twice the amount of players (counting all the people signed up in asia but not subscribed) that my country Scotland has in population, we've only got just over 5 million folks here
It is not normally ranked as one of the best Facebook games though...just the most populous.

My point in this discussion was more along the lines of WoW being small potatoes in the global arena. There is no denying the numbers for the Western Market, even in the 4+ million range. For the Eastern Market though... it is not top dog.

Couldn't care less. Game developed wrong after mid BC and stopped being for my tastes, so even if its 100 millions doesn't say anything.
Although it was to be expected since their last expansion released in China so...whatever.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."

All of em... read the OP before commenting.
I think his point was are the numbers counting the people over in asia who 'pay as they go' if you like but have active accounts, even if not playing.
To me it all seems like spin and marketing, but hey ho.. everyones gotta make a mil or so eh! The little fella on my other shoulder tells me that they have so many subscribers here in the EU and the US that they don't need to spin it but my cat just ate him, the little fella had eaten a bad 'shroom so now i'm back to wondering about spin.

Yes it includes those in Asia (as long as they have logged on within the last 30days) - blizzard clearly state this on the press release so as I have said already argue about blizzard definition of a subscriber but not about the 12 million - blizzard are not hiding how they get the 12 million number their is no spin or conspricy here.
They should have put this in the "Top 5 Easter Eggs" column......
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

It includes "Internet Game Room" accounts... somebody within a 30 day period buys a minute of time, they are included.

Can we say Farmville is the best in their category?
Marketing ploy and nothing more. I like Blizzard but I'm not buying into this insanity they preach.
No, we cannot. Quantity does not mean quality.
Can we say Farmville has the most users? Yes.

Bigger than Belgium and suckier than Legoland.
WOW,eq2,Vanguard,WAR,LOTRO,AOC,Rift Aion, SWTOR, TERA.
Currently playing GW2.

You are correct. Blizzard reported 11.5 millions subscribers in December 2008. They mentionned it in further press releases, but they have stuck to this number for 2 years.
(doh I feel repetitive :S)
Why do they use Belgium? I mean it doesn't sound awesome. More like 'meh, whatever'

Like.. Cuba or Chad? Or maybe Greece!
"World of Warcraft has 10 times the population of Swaziland!"
The Belgium thing really does not make sense, because that was broken back in Oct 2008 before Lich King was released.
If they are going with 12 million, then they should go with the following countries that have populations greater than the 11.5m from Nov 2008...
Oh wait, there are none. How about between that 11m from Oct 2008 and now? There we go!
Cuba 11.2m
Chad 11.27m
Greece 11.3m
But see, all of those are still below the 11.5m numbers from Nov 2008.
So yeah, really - the Belgium thing makes no sense.
How about cities, eh?
WoW has more subs than Karachi, Pakistan has people (11.8m)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If they wait a little, how about more subs than Beijing has people at 12.5m?
Perhaps when they have over 20m and have more folks than New York? Or the 30m in Tokyo?

Bigger than Belgium!
We should go take it over then. I hear it is very nice there in the summer.
All die, so die well.
And I'm sure their annual revenue dwarfs the GDP of most Third-World countries. WOOT!
