I mean seriously, you Lego nuts out there: If you want a REAL MMO that is about building whatever your mind can imagine, it's MineCraft. I watched the video for lego universe, and I couldn't help but think: "Wow, they don't give you a lot of space to build, do they?"
You think Lego Universe would be about building the world, not building a tiny little space no one is going to visit anyway. In MineCraft, you are world building... just look at my current MineCraft project:

"If you want a REAL MMO ...., it's MineCraft."
Minecraft isn't an MMO.
Minecraft only has a multiplayer option that's horribly bugged.

Quite frankly I don't understand why there is even a lego MMO. There should be some sort of Lego Universe game but not in the formula of an MMO.
Well, an MMO is a Persistant World really. Many people have servers, it just limits how many people can play per server. But what is made there, is persistant and remains for others to visit when you are logged off. Seems pretty MMO-ish to me, but currently the power of what it can do is very limited due to the fact it's an Idependant game thats only now started to get money.
MMOs haven't been just a persistant world for a long time now. Game developers have butchered that trait for years. MMOs are actually about something else called socializing in "large" worlds. Some MMOs these days use servers.
Minecraft is a fun little game where people can play how they want. In retrospect Minecraft has better design than an MMO and I would say it's better than an MMO.
If your goal is to build things then the free downloadable software from lego that let's you build using all of their different types of legos is FAR superior to mine craft with only cubes that look like Doom 1 graphics.
If you're looking for a game with a persistant world where you can socialize with lots of people and build with many different types of pieces (including animated ones) then once again Lego Universe is far better then Mine Craft.
What does Graphics have to do with anything? Because say MineCraft has 'Doom 1' graphics, but clearly these people have never actually played the original Doom 1. The lighting in the game is its true shine, for the lightning is extremely advanced. The game merely appears old-school, and that is one of the biggest appeals for me as I am not a fan of the modern trend of realism and graphics.
The block-ish design proves only one thing: "A great game doesn't need great graphics, and great graphics doesn't make a game great. "
Never played mine craft but I can tell you that Lego Universe is a good game. I played in the beta along with my son and we enjoyed it a great deal.
I haven't seen Lego's tool that lets people do this but it sounds interesting.
And yep that's what Lego Universe is gonna be about.
The thing that makes Minecraft so great (at least the Single Player and soon to be awesome MP Alpha Survival Modes) is that even in its early alpha stage (if you buy it you get free patches forever even until the creator releases the final product) you can spend weeks trying to figure the game out and see all there is to see as long as you do not cheat by looking on the web.
It's like an adventure game you can spoil it if you look at walkthroughs.
Let's face it, Lego Universe can't match this:

When it comes to getting a program to build things (which was the main point of your original post) then graphics matter a huge deal. The whole point of building structures is to look at them.
Then to only have cubes is limiting. Sure on a large enough scale it could essentially be pixel art and allow for a decent amount of creation. But having a FREE lego building software that gives me all shapes and sizes of pieces to use is superior by far.
I get that there are people who like minecraft because they can build something and then have someone else walk through it. But there are tons of pieces of software that I consider far better for building things, including modelers which give me total freedom over building something.
I'm glad the guy sold a lot of copies and that people enjoy it. But to me it isn't impressive or that fun or a project as it stands right now. Maybe when he's gotten it up to a beta stage it will be more intriguing but it isn't at this point.
Minecraft has a creative building mode for kicks but I wouldn't say it's the primary reason for playing Minecraft.
Again, Minecraft is a little more than an MMO. It has SP and MP survival modes where the intention here is to make it harder for you to build things with blocks. You also don't just build with blocks either. You farm, mine, and fight monsters. You also have to eat food to increase health. You collect resources. Etc. I'm sure Lego has some things along these lines as well, but Lego is an MMO primarily.
Minecraft can also be played like an MMO. But it isn't an MMO.
That's what I think.
Snarling, it's pretty clear you haven't exactly done your homework or played Survival Mode Minecraft, which is the game's adventure-style mode which is growing day by day. Such includes combat and also the invasion of monsters and various mishaps. You shouldn't judge the game purely on the "Free Version" that is posted on the website, as the paying version is vastly different experience which makes it a true game.
But as your idea of FREE Lego software? Lego Universe is $39.99 with a Monthly Subscription. MineCraft is $13, with no monthly subscriptions with huge, endless worlds to build on. Beat up 'cubes' all you want and say how bland they are, but a huge endless world to build with is fantastic in my book. Any game that allows you to build to 1:1 scale Enterprise D has GOT to have merits.

I don't see why Minecraft would be talked about on this site, as it is not an MMO, but it is epic.
If you are just wanting to build random crap, and nothing else, Lego Universe is probably the best way to go. The thing that makes Minecraft so much better is that you actually have to work hard at creating things, and you feel more proud about building it. You don't just place blocks, you create them. Plus, there is the whole aspect of danger in Minecraft, that is lacking very much in Lego Universe.
Also, you cannot build a computer in Lego Universe. You can in Minecraft.

Lego Universe is a kids' game. I'm not sure why this thread exists.
Game is addicting even though there isn't a point to it, it's just sandbox. First thing i do is gets some wood together, make picks then go mining. I mine straight down to the bottom then look for diamonds. Couple wacks with a diamond sword takes out monsters pretty quick. Did some farming, and kept grass well light outside my building to attract animals for food and feathers. Need to have the land close to water for farming. Once you have food and a diamond sword, the world is your oyster, lol.
Archlinux ftw
That's because it's still in alpha. It's not a finished game yet. Hopefully by beta or the finished game survival mode will be entirely about survival.
There's supposed to be a dark side to all the happy care-free building that is well represented in the very end of this inception trailer :P

The current MineCraft survival mode is entirely about survival,. but there just aren't enough threats yet. The current big problems are only the undead and explosive monsters in the darkness and at night. Come Holloween's update, they'll become more numerous. In time, the game will develop more and more; but as it's current state $13 is an absolute steal. The game is amazing for being so simple, of the best games are.
Ok, guys, the OP is making Minecraft a bit ridiculous here...
People should know what minecraft in its current state is about, there is now only Survival mode,
as in the beginning you are supposed to make a shelter, here is a nice lil' vid of some SURVIVAL mode gameplay in minecraft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylVtj-1Ccgg&feature=related,
there is also farming, killing, exploring(yes, an endless world!) making castles/homes/mines or atlantis or something else ^^
I suggest people just try it, it's only 10 bux, and well, it's pretty addicting also ^^
Not enough threats means nothing to survive from means you are left to just build, craft, farm, or fight monsters if you want to. So it's not really about survival is it?
And yet it's fun. Simple, but stupidly fun.
Not many games are made for fun anymore.
Lego has my vote over Mindcraft...
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Lego has your vote, and you don't explain why? Rather hard to take your advice on it then.
Say what you want about LUO but I am having a blast playing it with my daughter. Heck of a lot better than FFXIV that I wasted 80 on.

I don't see Minecraft listed on this site. Guess that's why the OP feels he has to troll these forums instead of discussing Minecraft in the Minecraft forum.
Minecraft is a wonderful game, and it does scratch the Lego itch in a big way, but its multiplayer has almost none of the traditional features of MMOs. Most of all, damage isn't implemented yet, so it's a bit like Garry's Mod. It's a playground with physics.
There are some excellent RPG elements in the single player game - dangerous monsters that infest the dark regions of a world you can explore endlessly. Once this stuff is integrated into the multiplayer, and servers given the ability to connect to each other, Minecraft will essentially be an MMO, and an amazing one. But that is many months away, and the result should be a terrifying and deadly serious game that fits nicely on your shelf between Dwarf Fortress and Darkfall.
That is, nothing like this one.
It baffles me that somebody with an apparent love of Minecraft would come here just to piss on a game which appeals to a similar type of player but doesn't have similar features and will never have the same purpose. As a fan of Minecraft who didn't know Lego Universe was already out, I'm pretty excited about both of them.
