MORTAL ONLINE NEW BUILD RELEASE NOTES FOR 11 OCTOBER

RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

Just posted on the official forum:

Mortal Online new build

This next patch is going to update Mortal Online to a new build of both the Unreal Engine and the network solution. This will allow us to finally solve our current critical issues we could not solve within the old build. This is an important step which had placed most of our planned feature development on hold while this build was prepared.

We have been running a separate test server in parallel to the live server in order to be able to properly test this new build before going live with it. Unfortunately, we have not been able to do this before. Thanks to a very dedicated testing team, we have ironed out the most critical bugs in the new build. We’d like to extend our thanks to the test team who helped us with this.

The feature section below lists that which has been added with the new build; a little information about each area will be explained on our website on Monday. This new build is planned to go live on Monday 11th of October. Some updates to the list may come on Monday.

------ New build FEATURES ------

• New build on both the network solution and Unreal Engine.

• Native 64 bit OS support with improved memory management.

• Direct X 10 support and general performance increase.

• Added high resolution textures on all creatures and the world of Nave.

• Overall optimization and performance increase in the world of Nave.

• The majority of trees in Nave are now powered by SpeedTree.

• New lightning system which gives better performance on shadows and an improved visual effect throughout the game.

• Navmesh system implemented into the build.

• Expanded server side checks and included protocols to verify legal in-game actions for players.

• A prediction and interpolation system is now in place for more precise movement.

- Added more blood to players who loses a limb.

- Added decals and sound when a copped of limb/body hits the ground.

I hate to say it, but I don't care...

I've read so many negative posts on this game, and how the company does business, that I can't bring myself to ever consider this game.

Everyone knows that you really don't get a second chance to make a first impression. However, something to consider is the collateral damage a bad release can cause. I've never played it, but they public response to the game has soured me on it.

I'd have to see a sudden avalanche of overwhelmingly positive feedback on the game in order for me to change my mind. Will this patch cause that to happen?? I will wait and see.

Kudos to those who actually enjoy it!

Kind of what I thought... changes to the engine related items like graphics and interpolation but as expected the long list of content that people were touting a few weeks back seems to have missed the patch.. or at least the patch notes (sometimes things are in game but not the notes..).

We will have to see if this is enough to justify the "Mortal Online 2" tag that Henrick claimed.

    That... is... so.. COOL!

And @ Spankybus, you haven't played the game so your opinion is clearly uninformed, MMORPG.com tends to have a negative view on most new games - ALA DF. Its best to either try yourself or read the mortal online customer forums for an informed view of the game.

That bouncing head thing almost makes me want to get my head chopped off in-game.   Almost.... image

Definitely some good things in there (overhead swing, sweet!), but the key elements of the new build are probably the most important elements toward really improving the game long-term.

We will have to see if this is enough to justify the "Mortal Online 2" tag that Henrick claimed.

    Just FYI:

SV have never promised one single patch containing a long list of content. The "MO 2" Henrik talked about is the MO that the new build will allow them to make eventually, not the MO that monday's patch will deliver.

This patch is the first one with this new build - a build that opens up whole new possibilities. New content and polish will be implemented during a number of future patches.

So a complete "MO 2" will not arrive on monday, which is just fine since no such thing has been announced.

If you read his comments, he CLEARLY states that the new patch will be Mortal Online 2.. and when cautioned about making such a claim.. he instead reafirms it:

[23:17] <@HenrikNystrom>; epic patch is getting closer, we just want it to work well, and of course to live up to most expectation

[23:17] <@HenrikNystrom>; As, there is indeed major differences

[23:19] <@HenrikNystrom>; if you wont notice a diff, then I dont know hehe..

[23:19] <@HenrikNystrom>; We are talking Mortal Online 2

[23:27] <[BRB]Mojoz> henrik don't make hype you won't be able to live upto, claiming its going to be "Mortal Online 2" is a massive statement to make o.O

[23:28] <@HenrikNystrom>; Mojoz, hehe I stand by that sentence

So as not to derail this thread though.. the discussion about his announcement about Mortal Online 2 can be found here:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/292768/Henrick-IRC-chat-New-Epic-Patch-is-so-incredible-it-equals-Mortal-Online-2-Miracle-patch.html

I have stated quite a few times that I doubted the claims folks were making about all this new content being included...people got their hopes up and thought they were getting new magic schools, tavern systems, minigames, completed fishing, Alchemy, Cooking, more dungeons... so on and so forth.   And who knows.. maybe some of that will actually be in the patch come Monday...  so let's just wait and see what actually makes it into the game.

    To clarify, once again:

The "Epic patch" refered to in the chat log is a patch from the company Epic, i.e. an upgrade for the Epic engine that MO uses. The upgrade gives the devs a whole new set of tools for MO's future development, which makes it a major step forward for the game, generally speaking.

The "MO 2" Henrik speaks of is the MO that this upgraded engine will enable, in time. It will make it possible to implement a lot of new stuff and fix the existing gamebreakers (like poor AI and sucky GUI).

Monday's patch, on the other hand, is the first MO patch since the upgrade. It is a big and important patch but it's not the one and only Epic patch that will give us the complete "MO 2" straight away. No one from SV have said anything like that. All the new content you mention will hopefully be implemented in the not-too-distant future however, since more patches will probably follow this one.

Henrik should ofc be more careful when using terms like MO 2 and not get carried away by his own enthusiasm, since people love to quote stuff out of context and make it suit their own agendas. The "MO 2" or "Epic patch" hype has been severely blown out of proportion, both by naive fanboys wanting a better game, and by calculating haters trying to create false expectations so that they can cry fail when no complete "MO 2" magically appears out of this so called "Epic patch".

    -snip-

Sorry.. but that is just incorrect or at least misleading.  The date of this chatlog was weeks AFTER they received the upgrade.  Henrick was CLEARLY speaking about the upcoming Monday patch as being Mortal Online 2.  They are one in the same.  I'd also point out that his website posted the chatlog... and his website is host to countless posts about his words.  He reads the forums regularly.  Not once did he clarify, or retract his statements.  When (as you describe) the hype is getting "severely blown out of proportion" on his own website... shouldn't he (or his paid Community Manager) have reined it it? Instead he purposely allowed his fans to run with what he said for the last 3 weeks.  If you would like to continue a seperate discussion about his chatlog we can do so here (http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/292768/Henrick-IRC-chat-New-Epic-Patch-is-so-incredible-it-equals-Mortal-Online-2-Miracle-patch.html) so as not to derail this thread.

Bottom line though... it really doesn't matter what he said in the past.  The community has had countless posts over the last month describing this coming patch as their last chance.  Whether that's accuarate or not remains to be seen, but it is a widespread belief.  Simply scroll through the official forums.. or heck.. even these ones and you will see many posts about all the great content that is coming in the "Epic/ Mortal Online 2" Patch.   This has been built up to be a huge event...  when people login and have the exact same game, but with the possibility of better graphics and movement prediction, I strongly suspect that they might be more than a little disappointed.

To me.. graphics and trees would be so far down the list of "must fix" items that I wouldn't even mention them.  The prediction system and the cheat fixes are good (if they work as planned) . If the AI really works now, that would certainly be a nice improvement.  Honestly though, I do not think any of those account for the majority of cancellations.

I could be wrong though, and I freely admit it.  Maybe this patch is really going to fix the root causes of attrition the game has seen.   Time will tell.  Next week should certainly be interesting!

PS: It's also possible (as I said previously) that some of this missing content is actually going to be in the patch.  We won't know until Monday.

You've really nailed it with this post.

SV was pretty specific with what this build would do immediately, and what it would allow in the future, with what they officially stated on their main website.  We'll have to see on Monday, but this new build appears to satisfy those points, and then some.

The part I've highlighted in red is absolutely true, and has been transparent from the beginning.  From what I've seen and heard, the few people that have really been trying to make an issue out of the "MO2" stuff, and blowing it out of proportion, have been the people that hate the game, for the very deceptive reason you've identified - so they could proclaim it a failure, even if it does significantly improve the game.

And that's the key.  Again, we'll have to wait until Monday, but if this new build performs as advertised, it will markedly improve the current game, and will enhance future development for the game.

You are simply wrong here; he is not CLEARLY speaking about anything else than the Epic engine upgrade.  Actually, you are the one posting misleading claims. They received the patch from Epic weeks ago, and have spent these weeks patching the engine and testing the new build. Now they will start patching the actual game, and monday's patch is the start of that.

I agree that SV, and Henrik in particular, need to work on their communication skills. However, this does not contradict anything I've said about the "Epic" patch. It just proves that unclear communication can be fatal for MMO devs.

Yeah, the community is restless. MMOs communities generally are. However, this does not contradict anything I've said about the "Epic" patch. It just proves that a lot of forum dwellers lack patience, reading skills, and/or just like to post unsubstantial drivel. And btw, I wouldn't call noticeably better graphics, improved AI and working combat the "exact same game". Some people will always be disappointed but if this patch delivers, I hardly think they'll be the majority. Judging from the forum response, most of the community is overwhelmingly positive to the patch notes - quite unique in MO's post-lauch history.

To me.. graphics and trees would be so far down the list of "must fix" items that I wouldn't even mention them.  The prediction system and the cheat fixes are good (if they work as planned) . Yeah, we'll see what this patch does for MO. Just please refrain from posting misleading info about the patch, unless ofc you feel that actively contributing to the unrealistic expectaions is very important to you.

More fool you. You can not expect an indi company to release something that is just right first time. MMOs are like wine they get better with age to a certain degree. After too much time they become like vinegar though.

Anyways this patch is exactly what MO needs. The game itself is still far more superior and has far more depth than any other MMO currently out. There were just a lot of bugs in the game that made it almost unplayable.

A note of caution - this is just the ground work patch, nothing major will be different with the game. Do not expect:

    - Good AI
    - No bugs
    - Speed Tree to work correctly
    - A perfect experience

    Fingers crossed.

Sorry, but as far as I can tell the only person who has posted misleading information (by your own admission "unclear") is the CEO of the company.. Henrick... who allowed his fans to continue with the false hope he created weeks ago.  Anyhow.. this isn't the Henrick Chatlog thread it's the Patchnotes thread.. so as I have said if you would like to continue a discussion about what Henrick said in the chatlog let's move to that thread.

As for the actual PatchNotes...  I think the most interesting part was the statement that they did inhouse testing this time so theoretically they should have a much better patchday than the previous ones. I wonder if they actually used system specs as a major criteria for selection or if they just took everyone with access to the Patriarchs Forum... It will be interesting next week.

The handful of posters obsessing over the phraseology of "MO 2", and intentionally trying to build and reinforce false expections, have been misleading.

Most players knew what to expect, which is reflected in the almost universally positive posts found in the thread that announced the new build.  There is certainly very, very little disappointment (if any), which would seem to refute the insinuation that the playerbase had been filled with false hope.  This patch appears to address the specific points SV set out to improve officially listed here: http://www.mortalonline.com/news/newsletter-september-2010-09-16

Lastly, the use of a test server is hopefully a helpful tool that will aid in better testing and integration of builds and patches in the future.  One thing I learned from other games I've played that had test servers was that it was no guarantee of a perfect launch of a major patch.  Even Blizzard, despite WoW's test server, ends up needing one or more hotfixes after a really major patch goes live, and they have more money than some Third World countries.  In any event, we'll see on Monday how much of a help the test server was, but I don't know anyone that's anticipating perfection.

    EDIT: Removed rambling.

Henrik, being the majority owner of StarVault is legally bound to tell the truth when he makes statements online about Mortal Online.  This "false hope" you refer to is synonymous with a lie, and of course lying about your product in order to sell more of your product is against the law.  We all know laws that govern businesses are very well enforced in socialist Sweden.

It is clearly stated in the patch notes these notes are not final, and things may change from now until patch day, but ultimately Henrik is keeping to his word.  What he said would be in the Epic patch is going to be in the epic patch.  Henrik also stated new features in the patch notes that he didn't mention elsewhere meaning the Epic patch is even better than what he said in previous irc chats.

So are these patch notes a bunch of  "false hope" as slapshot put it, or is it the EPIC patch that we've been waiting for?  Do you trust an anonymous forum users posts over a publicly traded video game companies CEO legally bound to tell the truth?  You decide.

My thoughts exactly. Except I did play it during beta and it has not changed much since then. So my experience with the game first hand is what soured me, not people's reviews of it. Although I agree with all the reviews as they were my frustrations and opinions as well.

In terms of honesty? I'd go for the forum user. He may use allot of hyperbole to convey his feelings and views, but they will be his honest opinions and views while a CEO knows how to bend the truth to make his product look appealing when in fact it is not. That is what the entire profession of marketing does -- take something unappealing and find the right collection of words and imagery to make it appear appealing to the consumer without directly lying about it to maintain legality.

Thanks!   Also.. I would like to point out that my comments refer to Henrick's official chatlog which was recorded on 9/16 as the "false hope" of Mortal Online 2.  I believe the patchnotes listed above to be 100% truthful, at least as far as their intentions.  Whether they have in fact done everything listed (like fix screendrag) remains to be seen, but I believe that they honestly think they have fixed it.. again.

As long as they are able to successfully incorporate the improvements listed in the patch notes into the game, it will be a pretty substantial improvement to Mortal Online, and provide a better foundation upon which to build more and better content.

To me, that's the most important thing, and that sentiment appears to be echoed by the extremely positive response the new build notes have gotten so far.

Slapshott you are making out like people are disappointed with the patch, but with one quick look at the MO forums, from the customers you get a much different picture.

    http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/54092-patch-notes-new-build-release.html

    Pretty clear immensely positive response.

    http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/54102-whos-coming-back.html

66/78 seem satisfied with the content of the patch (30 are waiting to see it isn't broken)

36/78 are coming back straight away.

SV have said they have got a test server now so hopefully there won't be as many bugs in this patch as the previous ones (although even then they are generally hot-fixed within the week)

Never has SV worked so long on a patch, and this patch is mainly designed to FACILITATE  further content. The community seems to be rallying behind SV and only time will tell if their faith is well placed.

So... the poll shows that 36 people are resubscribing and another 30 could potentially resubscribe.  They sold in the neighborhood of 23,000 units, the vast majority of which no longer play.. and which they are hoping to lure back.   I don't think 36 yes votes and 30 maybes would count as an "immensely positive response"... but perhaps you are right.

    Time will tell!

PS... that poll you linked includes many "votes" from people who currently subscribe who voted as though they were "coming back"..  SHinzon...Tizio...Paratus...   ROFL...  yeah they were "convinced to come back...".  Heck even Bradon Greymoor voted that one...

View Poll Results: Are you coming back on monday?

Yes! Epic patch is epic, im convinced to come back

I know they are not complete (the notes) but it didn't really add much to the game.  The problem they are having now is a liack of "things to do" which most MO forum users agree on.  The idea that this patch will enable SV to do a lot of this is great. . but they still have to do it.

Also, I have no idea why people keep saying that IRC is not official. . if the CEO of a company is telling his users something - it doesn't matter what the format is.

I don't care about the MO2 thing. . that is in another thread.  Aside from textures and some fixes I don't see how this will hold subs much longer.  A lot of people in the MO forums have clearly said they stopped playing since they were waiting for this patch. . when they log in. . it might look prettier. . but it is mostly going to be the same game.

The month following this patch and the content released in the next 2 months or so will truly tell the story of how much this patch has "allowed" them to do.  I might resub though just so I don't get tempted to resub to other games that will bore me to tears.

Completely true. . the community that is still around though.  They need to bring people back.  The game launched and went through beta on its potential. . and still seems to be running on that.  They will have to deliver at some point.  I hope they do.
