Ive heard this quite a few times and often wonder what "hard" mmo's these hardcore gamers play. Ive played most of the AAA games (F2P isnt something that appeals) and have yet to find an mmo that  I would call hard.  Those that say wow is easy mode, instant gratification is truly hardcore or hasnt done much outside of questing.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Hard mmos are probably games like eve, ffxi, eq1.  Easy mmo's are 90% of the games out there today.  If the game is popular chances are its easy to play.  [I like to believe that] back in the day developers cared about putting a game out that they were proud of .. and not like today were its about making as much money as possible.

No those are not hard mmos:

EvE aka set it and forget it skill building

FFXI aka good linkshell =  easymode

EQ1 aka time comsuming setbacks to kept'em playin

Games in the past relied upon taller hurdles to keep players playing and those effected by that sort of brainwashing think it meant hardmode!

Games these days lowered the hurdles to get to the end, so now are pushed to come up with more ways to keep players playing. The same brainwashed people call this easymode.

I gave up WoW a couple of years back and recently had the chance to play on a relatives account . From what I've seen in the chat on the server I've started up a new character on is that this patch has really upset a lot of people . Thinking back on it this always happens to some degree in WoW when a new expansion comes out . it was the same around the time of the Burning Crusade but this time it does seam to be more . The other thing I've noticed in the EU is that many of the servers are low of medium populations and less are high or full so the increase to 12 million must be due to Players in either North America , the Far East or elsewhere . I'm finding its quite a lot of fun still . Its far far easier than the WoW i remember for leveling at least . Ultimatly its not the direction I would have liked to see the game go but yeah theres still flashes of the old magic there now and then . I would say its worth playing once every 2 years for a few months around the time of the next expansion . Playing year in year out must be a very unrewarding and frustrating experiance though .

I agree . EvE i found hard though . AOC I found hard because of getting ganked left right and center . Lotro offers more challenging instances when your levelling and WoW has nothing like the challenge of exploring Moria . What I think people mean when they say WoW is on easy mode all the small things that add up like mounts at level 20 for a pitance instead of 40 for 90 gold , cross server looking for a group that teleports you to the instance rather than you having to get there on foot and risk being ganked on a pvp server , xp in the battlegrounds and a lot of other things too numerous to mention . I'm sure the endgame of WoW still offerrs challenges but I'm guessing this does'nt make up ease of other things in the game in many peoples eyes .

So by your standings what makes a game hard and what makes it easy?  I believe FFXI was hard because it was hard to kill monsters, a goblin 3-4 levels higher than you and your group can decimate everyone with a bomb toss and you fought hundreds of em.  Switching your weapons to kill certain monsters, use certain magic against certain mobs etc etc.  Having some complexities to each and every encounter is something thats lacking in the majority of games today.

Ultimately if you had to think and react to the movement/flow of most encounter in the game then thats what makes it hard .. or challenging.  If i can close my eyes and mash my keyboard and do well I believe thats considered easy.

One thing that is definitely harder in todays games is making friends, in my opinion. Nobody cares about anyone but themselves these days, it seems. And with the ability to solo to max level and even PuG raid end-game, who needs em'?

    Ruined my hunter....

  • TechleoTechleo Member Posts: 1,984

Fundamentally its the same game, so no. Perhaps a rebalanced version but not a NGE worthy set of changes. As for the last post, why is your hunter broke? I've heard some horror stories about the focus not lasting long enough in raids. As of yet though I'm finding I can fight longer and harder with my Beastmaster build. Perhaps its just people haven't adjusted to the mechanics*shrug*

I guess the main reason I don't ever run out of Focus is my BM is set so every crit I make gives me Focus. In fact I have 9 ways to up my focus. Not including fervor. I think people will adjust nicely with some time.

For the new 12 year olds that play the game each year?  For the grandparents with 12 year old grandchildren that start playing each year?  Both the grandparents and grandchildren that is...start playing that is.

Some people enjoy the game.  Some people used to enjoy the game.  Some people have never played the game and just want to hate on it.

As a former player, I would not say that it sucks - but rather it is simpler than it was.  "Dumbed down" is the common term for it.

NGE does not fit what they have done with the patch.  Most major patches and the expansions have led to a LGE, but nah - not a NGE by any means.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

No it won't.  For the majority of WoW players, it's an improvement.  Hey!!!! Before you hit reply to disagree with me, I remind you I said 'majority' ... that just means more than 50%...which is a fact based on every poll I've seen and players I've talked to in game.
