Lightsabers in SWTOR

How much variation will there be for lightsabers in the game?

For example, a high lvl lightsaber vs a low lvl one.

From the concept art, i know that the handles will look different, but is there much visible variation to be had?

Differing handle designs dont do much as they cant be seen in most cases when you are wielding the light saber.

There are also only so many colors you can have for lightsabers.

How did they do it in SWG regarding differentiating high lvl lightsabers to low lvl ones?

well, as for the color. they could have any of the visible spectrum of colors. as for the differencei dont know. i dont think SWG had any difference honestly. i never really played it so i cant really say.

    Played
WoW, DCU online, star wars: the old republic, city of heroes, city of villains, everquest, plenty more I'm probably forgetting or aren't worth noting.

Just a difference in colors? That seems pretty dull since there are only so many colors you can have.

Making the beams too flashy would be against lore as well so i dont see much customization options (visable ones, hilt dosent really count since you dont see it).

A lightsaber is a lightsaver, diferent hilts and colors thats all the customization you can have.

Would you rather have them add sparkles and little gadgets that dangle at your hilt? Or perhaps lightsabers with classic weapon hilts? Or more fluff?

I like lightsabers the way they are, so I hope the customization stops there :)

Only custom i hope for is hilt, rest gotta be a choice of dual sabres, or twin

I wouldn't mind if the light gets a little brighter as the weapons get higher in power.  It seems like in the single player games different colors indicated something about the type of weapon it was, but I cannot remember what it was, off the top of my head. There were like two or three crystals you could put in them and the color was decided by those crystals.

For those that had played SWG for a while they could tell the difference in lightsabers at a glance when in combat. mostly from blade colour as generally those that had been around a while had either Lava crystal, elder crystal, Blackwing crystal or some other names crystal which had certain effects associated with that particular crystal, the standard colour crystals were just colour varience visually.

    Certain effects? Please elaborate.

I suppose it's a fine line between the customization options and staying true to the lore. That's why i initially thought that the only difference would be beam colors and hilt design.

But you mentioned effects. I doubt they would be too flashy but still i'd like to know what effects you're talking about.

Of course not. If they did that i'd roll anything but a lightsaber user.

What i'm keen to know is how they can differentiate the high lvl sabers from the low lvl ones.

From what i've read so far it's just the color difference, which isn't much.

Then again, not much they can do i suppose.

I think the lightsabers are an item drop like any other item in the game. It is a loot table based game so I imagine you will be able to see what the lightsaber drops look like on some kind of TOR Thottobot clone.

Another effect SWG had was the hilt of your lightsaber would affect the density of the beam, for example certain lightsaber hilts would have thicker beams while others were thinner. Also, I'd imagine there will be lightsaber height differences, because in Star Wars lore there were short and long sabers.

Well traditionally a Jedi always makes their own Lightsaber. Hopefully it's part of the class where you have to find the components to craft one yourself. Choosing what you wanted to use for a hilt and finding a crystal you wanted to use and all that is part of being a Jedi.

I see where you're coming from.

However, i doubt what you mentioned will be the actual way a lightsaber is obtained in the game.

Pretty sure they will be drops/quest rewards rather than being obtained through gathering the saber materials and then assembling it.

They've deviated from the lore due to the necessities of fitting into the MMO mould.

Imperial agents already have a spec which will allow them to be able to heal, so who knows what else they may deviate from.

Different focus crystals would be my guess ( if it hasn't been said yet), they may not get much different visually as it's a beam of light, there's not much difference to be had in that.

Different degrees and/or levels of crystals as an example. The more exotic it is the more it enhances your DPS etc... Aside from hilts and colors this is really the only other thing they can do.

A cut scene shown of the Jedi's class story, shows a jedi forging their lightsaber. Might want to check that out, it's a decent video.

A person made their first LS in both KOTOR 1/2(well in number 2 you gave bao-dur the parts you collected)....then LSers would drop as loot. YOu also could find LS lens/crystals/etc to upgrade with.

I dont know yet how it will work, but I hope we can dual weild LS, and use dual bladed LS as well.

I wouldn't be surprized if we can't customize the color at all and it's bound to your faction/alignment, since different colors mean different things in SW;  red = sith, blue/green = jedi, and so on.

Color might just depend on the choices you make throughout the game, sort of like an alignment mood ring lol.

I am hoping color crystals arent limited.  If they are....

I always go with the blue/yellow colors for my dual weild(Michigan Wolverines). Since we are the good guys.

Red and silver should be for evil(Ohio State Buckeyes).

    Pretty straightforward IMO.

There isn't that much that you can vary with lightsabres besides color, hilt, and intensity of the light beam.

Throughout written, tv, and gaming lore lightsabers are in every single variant that other games offer.  I am not saying they would do this, but it's a possibility.  Think of every sword and/or weapon you've seen in a game...most have been made in the light saber type in the Star Wars universe.

Some examples from Star Wars Encyclopedia Wiki...

It would be nice to see Jedi and Sith having to craft the hilt, and loot crystals similar to the SWG style. However, i can see the Jedi/Sith class specific quests offering LS hilts as quest rewards.

Hopefully there also will be the inclusion of both named crystals and coloured crystals with different crystal types causing different types of DoT damage, or "chance to cause X to happen".

Knights of the Old Republic had crystals that when added to a light saber added additional effects. As far as colors go, sith traditionally used red or violet with blue, green, and yellow used by the Jedi.

I just wish they were all the same. I really hate the concept of One lightsaber can cut through things better than another lightsaber can. That very idea makes me sad.

And I wish SWTOR's lightsabers looked better. They look like they're drawn with a crayon.  They don't look like they put off any actual LIGHT.

But the whole game's graphics are up in the air, as everyone knows.
