For Retired Vanguard Players

boojiboyboojiboy Member UncommonPosts: 1,553

Many retired Vanguard players are looking forward to Rift.  It's the closest thing to VG on the horizon.

There's a Vanguard player check-in here:  http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?205-Vanguard-Player-check-in!

Cool. I even see a lot of Florendyl folks around from that one Vanguard roleplay site. Good for them if Rift works out.

Well ... the things I liked about Vanguard:

    - Excellent class system - many classes, good class design, very different playstyle for each, very complex

    - Huge gameworld with extreme viewing distances and an insane amount of quests

    - Very elaborate crafting system (well, still improveable, but better than most)

    - Other extras (Harvesting, Diplomacy, etc)

    - Many races and classes to choose from

But none of these turn up in Rift ?

    It looks okay-ish.

    - Only six races, including "darkelves" that ... arent dark. And apparently no female dwarves.

    - Classes: ugh. Just ugh. Looks really, really, really awful. 4 classes, 16 subclasses, everyone ends up trippleclass.

Otherwise theres not much to find out yet.

Here is my take as ive been following RIFT developments a little.

The first thing that drew me to Rift was I saw the graphics and they reminded me of VG.  I started to follow it for this reason and found out that there were some of the old VG devs on the project.

Rift has some interesting ideas but it also seems to be missing some major things that made VG great IMO.

No player housing. This was always very cool in VG. Anyone remember the great land rush?

VG had great crafting. From what ive seen Rifts looks more like WOWs then Vanguards.  Hopefully Beta changes that opinion.

I havent seen any kind of system in RIFT that was like VGs Diplomacy.

VG had some superb classes and great racial options. Yay Raki.  Rifts seem bleh and their character models from screenshots seem crappy. The Dwarfs look horrible to me.

Looking forward to beta starting soon and getting a chance to trying the game before I make snap judgements.

Cliffnotes= The world graphics look similar to VGs.  The rest does not.

mm yah, I don't think this one is for me either.  VSoH would have been awesome if someone other than SOE had it or at least SOE didn't treat it like the red headed step child (no offence to you red headed step children image ).  I hate the multi class stuff.  But hopefully it is successful.

As far as I can see Rift and Vanguard don't have much incommon, Rift is taking it safe, simple crafting, solo friendly, looks and feel "WoWish", only thing I find interesting is the dynamic events and see how complex they will be or it's just basic and simple rifts here and there and sometimes an invasion kicks in.

    Vanguard is in another leauge.

Not saying Rift will be bad I will try it out.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I love Vanguard, but its like a marrige gone bad.  So many good memories of exploring to see whats over the next horizan just an incredible game imo.  The only reason i left is well its not gunna recieve any more updates apparently and i figured i might as well divorce it now before the inevitable.  For those who havnt played it due to the bad pr rap give it a shot until your next big thing your waiting for arrives its one hell of a ride. If for some miracle that this gets supported again i would gladly renew my vows.

    Goodbye Vg

I've seen several post about Rift being the next Vanguard type of game.  Though I did enjoy Rift for the short period I was able to play, there are very few similarities between the two games.  As stated before, Rift is playing it safe...and why wouldn't you as a game company "play it safe"?  It's a shame that more companies out there aren't willing or daring enough to create games with the same depth as VG.  I hate to see a game as great as VG wither and die...but that's up to SOE and it would appear, as great as the game is, VG is toast.  I'd also agree with a previous poster, give VG a shot.  I came back to VG as time filler before Rift came out...now that I've played Rift(very limited exposure) and hearing that Rift is the next gen of MMO's..which I really hope isn't true for sake of the genre...I'm sticking with VG until the "end".  ;)

    Vanguard player here.

You know, if alot of VG players are contemplating RIFT, I may have to give it a shot. Seems like alot of EQ and VG players are looking to make RIFT their next home. Will keep an eye on it. Maybe I too will make the switch if alot of these players cross over to RIFT.

    Thanks for the message. Kudos!

I tried to play VG...really tried but I guess I came into it a little late cause the world was empty.  I don't particularly like to group a lot, but, it is nice to be able to see actual people in a game.  Not to mention the memory leaks that totally killed my experience.  with 4gigs of ram and a dual core 3ghz system with a 1gig video card I thought I would be ok on an old game like that.

Not sure what VG and Rift have in common, but I think I will purchase it.  The magic classes really appealed to me.  I like the pyromancers and not many good games today have those.

hmmm, I have a new system and have everything at max and the game runs just about flawless. I very rarely get a small "chug" (which I suppose is surprising) but i wonder if it's your card? what card is it? I'm using a gtx 260. A bit older but it runs the game very well.

    um.

I don't know how to say this other than Rift and Vanguard really are different games. If players are looking for a "vanguard" experience or something close to it I'm not really sure that they will find it in Rift.

er... "from the info available to us by the devs of course". image

Everything that make Vanguard unique and fun to play despite its flaws are missing in Rift. Rift has little in common with EQ/EQ2/Vanguard and actually much more with WoW.

the best thing about Vanguard in my opinion is the classes and no load screens (ala eq2). Same with Rift.

WoW doesn't have load screens (except instances), I can't see what you mean here.

they are different games sure but those of us who like a big world filled with high fantasy and polish are looking at Rift. I loved EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard. Rift is the next game in that line of high fantasy mmo's.

Just wanted to "chime in there" just in case image

rift is nothing like vanguard - where did you find information that it is? If anything it will be another wow clone.

    image

  • TribeofOneTribeofOne Member UncommonPosts: 1,006

was probably a rumor started by Rift Devs to try to attract the VG survivors

  • SfaliaraSfaliara Member Posts: 438

Look, Rift is not Vanguard 2.0 and never will be. The old-school concept was started by the devs in hope of attracting more people. Everything that made games like Vanguard and EQ/EQ2 what they are and distracted them from the mass of WoW wannabes, things like huge world, combat, robust crafting, housing, boats and a big variety of races are all missing in Rift. So yes, if you liked these games but absolutely hated WoW then don't jump aboard with much hope. My 2 cents.

P.S: I don't like using the word "wow clone" but this game, is this.
