It's about time they started addressing some of this. Frankly most if not all of this should have been in the game before it left Beta. I still don't know why they were in such a rush to release, weren't they rolling in money from FF13?
Anyway, good to see they're making an effort in improving it. I hope it continues getting better, I would like to play it one day. I never got into 11 because when it first came out, monthly payments were something I could afford and at this point, it's a bit dated to bother getting into (I know I'm going to get trolled for saying that, but it's my opinion). If 14 ends up becoming what it COULD be instead of what it is, though, I'd easily drop a sub fee on it.
May as well, only other game I intend to bother with is GW2 and it's subless.

So much here in this list that I always wanted from XI and Vanguard.
Zero regret for going back to Square Enix, I know I'm just feeding the trolls here a thanksgiving dinner but I think this really shows why Square Enix is the best MMO developer out there, and honestly the only MMO developer I'd even consider buying another MMO from at this point. I quit XI in 07, played Vanguard for 2 years (and every other non scam/f2p MMO out there) I already thought nothing compares to XIV, and with all of this I am getting more than I honestly hoped for before the first expansion.
I wasn't expecting anything even half this size before the PS3 release.
Man this is a funny post. Love you're tone of irony.
The first thing they need to improve is the acount management system, after that apply all this pachtes and then i will take a free trial and see If i like it.
Anyway, I'm glad they are coding like hell to improve the game.
I can imagine the shi*storm over at SE now. Coders working through the night getting screamed at by top management. Losing vacation, being threatened with firing.... It must be a coder's paradise.
It's true. I was glad I didn't buy it. But you have to appreciate that they're trying to fix it. Mind you they're doing so in fear of their pocket books, not their players, but whatever gets the ball rolling.
I'm at least willing to give a company a chance to fix their problems, especially a big one like SE. This isn't some backwoods company lacking the money and clout to make things better...if they wanted to...In this case, they seem to want to.

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

"oh hai, so looks we gonna add like functionality finally and uh, 4% more content. Big tough monsters. And stuff that you know we didn't think you guys would notice."
oh and an item shop fufufufu
I'm seriously missing any selling point that'd make someone want to buy this game.
"HOLY FUCK THEY HAVE ITEM SORTING WHERE THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT BEFORE!? I gots to buyyyy ittt!!"
Where are they handing out money to needlessly hype this boring ass game?
There is no item shop either in the game currently, announced, planned, or eluded to at anytime in the future.
But yes those of us that are excited about the patch are entirely worked up about item sorting.
Also to the people talking about the UI, it is no less PC friendly right now than XI ever was (it actually had hardware mouse unlike XI), but is probably best played on keyboard only which is how most older XI players played that game. I assume they thought it wouldn't be as big of a deal as it was made out to be since well it isn't exactly old news since it has been that way in their last MMO for nearly eight years now and thousands of people played that on PC's just fine.
Either way they are designing a new one for you, because you couldn't be bothered to learn a new control setup they have to spend development time to make sure you don't hurt your head since that is what most of you whine about the most you could at least be grateful for it. I personally would rather they told you all to get lost and used that time to design more game content for me to enjoy since I don't have this problem playing the game on a PC.
Well you should be. Item sorting is the only real addition.

12345 Because the old one is flawless and we're just whiners. No, pal. Sorry.
12345 There's nothing better than saying you don't want people to play since they have a certain mindset. Not only do you say this, but you say because you don't have this problem. How ignorant.
Why is SE still focusing on adding more levequest when the cap is 8+8. Those levequest is so easy to add: kill X amount of Y. Adding 1,000 more levequest will not make any difference cos they are so boring. Since there are so many useless npcs in town, can they add more interesting quests?
This is exactly what they needed to do. As Taus points out it is very unlike SE to announce things ahead. They are a very careful, very Japanese company. So this is a very strong sign that they have read the writing on the wall and are taking it to heart. This is SEs version of pulling out all the stops. They are putting their tender bits on the line. You have to respect them for doing that.
Also, it is obvious that they are concentrating delivering content. More leves, changes to combat and behests, changes to monster population? lets hope that means they are adding a rump ton of mobs. Sounds like there will be immediately more to do with more yet in the later patch. This goal-oriented content move is great. You have to have things to do. It sounds precisely like they have been reading the reviews and complaints are are specifically addressing those issues first.
Over all I would say it is very encouraging though I can't say that I will give it a try without more free time. It would be nice to know when the first update will hit. If it hits before the second 30-days ends then I will probably give it another go. Assuming that extra 30 got added to my account, I did turn off my recurring option before the end of the first 30 and haven't checked since. We will see. Otherwise I will simply wait for them to pony up that free time. Even if it is only a week. But I have no doubt they will sooner or later. After all, it was they who burnt their chance at a good first impression. The burden now lies on them to earn it back.
To be fair however, every single MMO released to date did have their first patch fix all the issues encountered and polish the existing content.
EDIT: Sorry if I'm being a bit forward, Taus. I don't feel like rewriting the whole thing and I'm cranky because my medicine is keeping me up all night.
That's not really fair at all, since you're pulling it out of you know where. Every single triple A MMO that has released, including World of Warcraft, hasn't had their stuff "fixed" for atleast 6-8 months. I've got a month's worth of "Free Day Credit" from World of Warcraft from Novemeber 24th 2004 to June 10th 2005. Vanguard, Warhammer, AoC... we don't even need examples, that's common knowledge. FFXIV's problems are even more severe then Vanguard, WAR, and AoC. Those games also had issues with lack of content at higher levels, but were generally less buggy or atleast more enjoyable then FFXIV is today. By the time FFXIV gets it's gameplay somewhat secure, the players will be gone because they had nothing more to do. The previous trio of games also followed a similar style that most users found easy to pickup and use and were used to it. However, WAR suffered a LONG time with a laggy UI and trust me when I say it was one of the most aggrevating things to ever experience.
In the first month of World of Warcraft, they opened up two new instances, a Christmas holiday event and a PvP event. They had lots of internal bug fixes, but when patch notes came it was more content then fixes. All this new content ontop of having two 40 man player instances already in the game, over 25 5, 10, and 15man instances for players to experience, upon launch and fully functional. This is a company that, at the time, had a significant less amount of money to work with then Square did now.
FFXIV's content isn't being polished because it's not even there. Take an outside view of why they added in their fatigue system. So nobody would reach the top to find absolutely nothing there.
FFXI is 8 years old ffs. You can't expect for a 2010 game to have the same shitty controls as an old game does.
I think a lot of the people here need to stop buying mmorpgs at release. Every mmorpg has lacked content or been broken at release. EVERY ONE of them. Because of the intitial box sales these companies will keep putting preasure on the development studios to release an unfinished product. Whats even worse is this is trickling into the console world where you can basically buy a demo for a game at $60 and then they make you pay for content/expantion packs........ Wake up people!
As Taus points out it is very unlike SE to announce things ahead. They are a very careful, very Japanese company. 1st Paragraph: As I said before, if their "Japanese culture" is to hold true, shouldn't it be true in the way of how they delivered the game? It's not like they're on the streets with parades of people happy with their product. Clearly, they weren't careful and didn't listen the first time nor seemed to care to.
2nd Paragraph: More leves? You mean those things that are "Kill 5 of this in your own little instance"? Besides, they limit you on that anyway, so the "content" they're delivering they're also preventing you from experiencing it. Are you looking at the same patch notes as me? Most of these bullet points seem to be fixes, which is great that they are fixing the game. The problem is they are fixing the game and need to in such a magnitude that when players reach the max level soon, they'll be nothing there for them in the forseeable future.
I'm skeptical how much will magically disappear or get pushed to the March patch, as most developers that make lists end up having to do.
It's not like SE was running out of money and had to rush out a product...
Many recent releases in the past year were 10x better than FFXIV. Sure they had bugs, but they sure as hell had content. They also didnt try to pass off bug fixes as a major improvement to the game either.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
... you guys are up way to early ... I only slept for like 4 hours and there is like 7 pages of this garbage already ...
I'm glad to see SE is taking steps (even if some of the fixes are about the vague-est wording you could POSSIBLY choose). Did they fix the XP nerf? I read and re-read and nothing. I see they added quests, but one would think that since this was a particular gripe for a sizable portion of the community that it would be addressed as well. Or is that just being shoved into the "extra guild leve" content.
I will hold my breath for this. It's a big list, one that definitely promises a good PS3 launch... or it could be a turd in a PS3 box as well :-P

I remember seeing Huge lists of promised content in AoC that still to this day has not made it in game. Kingship anyone? Still hands down I have not played 1 mmorpg since UO that wasnt crap at launch. I've pretty much tried them all. Also game companies don 't care about how much money they have. They care about how much they can make at any given time.
This is exactly what they needed to do in the beta.
Fixed that for you.
Actually I will disaggree with you. Initial content should be largely delivered before the beta. Beta should be for testing and refining that content to a nice polish. There should have been no new content added until the first content patch at the earliest 4 months into the game.
This is definitly adding content that should have been delivered at the release of the game.

Hey hey, then you missed EQ and DAoC, they had decent launches. Granted, there wasn't a huge market to flood servers. Ah, the good old days on Rodcet Nife on March 15th. 3300 people worldwide playing Everquest.
This is exactly what they needed to do in the beta.
Fixed that for you.

Did you play FFXI? What kind of content did it have that the highend players went to? Do they have large raid instances similar to World of Warcraft, or open dungeons like Everquest? What does FFXIV have right now as far as existing high-end content?
So much here in this list that I always wanted from XI and Vanguard.

I think it is most likely hubris though I cannot claim to read their minds. I am just saying that is the most likely explaination. Anyone, from any culture can succumb to hubris. But what I was specifically refering to was the Japanese tendancy to be very careful about what they publically promise. Japanese business culture tends to keep their cards very close to the vest. Now, especially after such a public crash and burn, it is very unsual for a Japanese company to lay this much out on the table. Granted there is still a good bit a vagueness and wiggle room for them here. How many leves will be coming and exactly when will they come? But still, Japanese companies usually wont even give you this much ahead of time. The take away from this is that they are making a very real, very genuine effort to redeem themselves. They are making a promise publicly so they can earn back trust when they deliver. They are also, of course, trying to give their fans every reason to stay with them though this. Hope is powerful but dangerous.
As for the second part, I think you are very right. More of the same will not fly. There are still at least a dozen ways for them to mess this all up. But it is in the broad sense that I think they are on the right track. What should they be concentrating on? More content. More things to do. More fun. Thats really what it boils down to. I don't think they could really do more with this announcement other than to make it more specific on what they plan to deliver and we got to realize that they are still trying to be careful with how much they promise. So will they deliver? Will they deliver the right stuff and not just more wrong? Hard to say. I am with you in thinking that they cannot simply add more leves. They would have to also allow more leves to be done in a day or add new catagories of leves so that another group of 8 can be done. Even at that, only adding leves will not be enough. leves are just not that interesting.
But the basic point remains. They communicating their plan with their players and the basic plan is to add content, deal with the laggy interface, generally improve the interface and improve the trading system. These are, in broad terms, the most major problems that were brought up. So I would say, yes, it looks like they are pointed the right direction. Now, will they get to the goal? Time will tell.
So much here in this list that I always wanted from XI and Vanguard.

What an amazing post. If I may ask, what non scam MMO have your played which falls short of FFXIV in your eyes?

Hey hey, then you missed EQ and DAoC, they had decent launches. Granted, there wasn't a huge market to flood servers. Ah, the good old days on Rodcet Nife on March 15th. 3300 people worldwide playing Everquest.

Did you play FFXI? What kind of content did it have that the highend players went to? Do they have large raid instances similar to World of Warcraft, or open dungeons like Everquest? What does FFXIV have right now as far as existing high-end content?

Paid employee, I'm assuming. Very entertaining to read.

What an amazing post. If I may ask, what non scam MMO have your played which falls short of FFXIV in your eyes?
