Or, you can ask someone for a 10 day trial and then if you subscribe, they get 30 days free.
There are some restrictions to the trial, like only being allowed to level up to 14, can't join supergroups, or use tells (to stop spammers) but if you identify yourself as a new player/trial player, people will help you out. Enjoy!
is the game worth the 15 bucks a month? i would like to make me a green lantern style character, i've screwed around with the champions online demo and people told me city of heroes is better..

Is it worth $15/month? I happen to think so, but if you look at my post history, I am quite biased towards city of heroes. I've played mmo's since dark age of camelot and been playing CoH since mid-late beta with only one small break before City of Villains came out. It's a different kind of game from most others out there. The community is quite friendly, which might be a by-product of the "hero" mentality. There is no equipment per se, but you can change your look at any time and have multiple costume slots to switch between. You don't buy replacement spells and powers, like WoW (fireball 1, then fireball 2, then fireball 3); instead your powers simply get stronger as you go up in level. Powers are further customized using "enhancements" which can increase damage, accuracy, root time, sleep time, endurance cost, etc. The game does rely on instancing and so people are always travelling between them (a big criticism is the heavy recycling of the maps in those instances).
My particular draw to the game is the customization and diversity of teams. The game plays just fine if you want to solo but it shines when you join teams. There simply are such synergies that the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. It also isn't stuck in the holy trinity of dps, tank, support. You can throw any combination of Archtypes together and still be quite successful. As for making a "Green Lantern" type, that depends on how you envision he would play out in the archtype system. You can make him fly, not a problem. But do you see him "blasting" things with his ring? An energy primary/energy secondary, tinted green and yellow, would be the way to go. Do you see him getting more in the face of his foes? Perhaps a dark melee scrapper (tinted green) with an invulnerability, regeneration, or will power secondary might be more appropriate. You won't be able to re-create him perfectly, but if you want to focus on certain aspects, it's doable. Please note though, don't try to recreate the costume perfectly or try to use the name of an existing protected copyright -- Marvel/DC and everyone else gets crank so Paragon will reset the name.
Anyway, check out the demo, and also check out the buildplanner (http://planner.cohtitan.com/planner) to see if something can work. The game is ultimately about imagination -- let yours run free ( ' :

Just so you know, all mmos have a trial. No mmos have a demo.
