Net expecting much. But to be frank, after some of my recent MMO's, not much will feel like a lot. I would like feedback from any players out there that are enjoying the game and can see it for the good aspects of it. We all know that end all be all MMO's are just not going to happen anymore these days. So please, unless the game is as bad as FFXIV, i dont need any freakouts. Just wondering if this game would be good to jump into to get some fun sci-fi action for a month or two. Thank you.

Don't bother paying $20, you can find it around $10 if you look.
For $10, it might be worth it to play the included month, you should easily be able to play through the content and get one or more toons to max level.
But this game is certainly NOT worth the sub fee. There is no reason to bother playing through advancement on a second toon, different specialty, some content. A waste. Want to try to advance a klingon? You'll stop: it is just too boring with next to no missions.
And avoid the cash shop: that is where the devs are putting their efforts, at the expense of the rest of the woefully unfinished/fleshed out game.
A shame really. But a company that puts in minimum effort, puts out the minimum product. And that is exactly what STO is.
Honestly, I don't play as much as I used too, but I still enjoy the game when I do log in. Not much replay value, IMO, which is why I have yet to roll an alt.

Do you think they are trying to go to F2P by having the item shop?
Unless you are in a hurry, i would wait a bit longer.
I am sure that around Christmas there will be a deal for $10.00 or under for the game that includes the 30 days time.
I use steam alot, and i am waiting till they do a holidays deal there to pick it up cheap.
Think it is around 20 bucks on steam now and i am sure you could find it a bit cheaper other places as well by looking around.

Looks like Best buy is 20 bucks with free shipping if you want the box as well or might call if you have a local store if you do not want to wait.
All that said, if you do not expect much you will get what it sounds like you want. A game to waste a bit of time on and something that you play very casualy.
Sounds like you have heard of all the negative stuff already so your call.
On the F2P i would expect them to go that route next year sometime as well. Their version of F2P sux, (going by how they say they will do CO) i would say that you get more from your time playing getting it cheap and using the free time, so you can ignore the C store.
No, they are trying to make money by having an item shop. They took things they gave "exclusively" to lifetime subscribers and put that in the item shop. They took exclusive ships that they gave if you referred 5 people who subbed, and put it into the item shop. They removed features from the game after launch and put it in the item shop. Go to the official forums to read about it, if it hasn't been deleted. When they can't make money this way anymore, they'll make it f2p. Personally, I think it's around the corner.
It's up to you if you want to support a company that does this.
As for the game itself, there's a person who was exactly like you. He thought the game was cheap and posted after a week that people were hating on the game. After a month, he posted and took those words back. I'm sure you can find it.
There's a really good possiblity that the game will be F2P by Feb 2011. If you think you can wait that long , it'll be more prudent.
I would look around a bit and see if you can find it cheaper than $20. It is not a terrible game if you just jump in, level a char and then get out. There is no replay value, if you create an alt, the alt will have to do the EXACT same missions your first char did. The crafting is the worst I have ever seen in a game (but I did not see the crafting in DNL LOL). There is really no reason to join a fleet as you can not get into an instance with your fleet.
The big features of the next patch are... hold on.... here it comes.... "repeatable missions" and "create your own mission"!!! Isnt that awesome? Now you can do the same missions over and over again or make your own because Cryptic has basically come out and admitted they will only be working on "weekly" missions, which are not weekly. You get a couple of new missions in a story line that are release each week for 3 or 4 weeks and then you wait a month or two for another set to come out. Hardly "weekly" by any sense of the word but that is how Cryptic markets things.
Dont even think about a Klingon, in 9 months the Klingons have only gotten 8 new missions and only started with 5 so your only option is grinding in a nebula since the feds wont PVP. Dont wait for their F2P, the model they have announced is WAY more restrictive than Turbines. Turbine gives its subbers 500 free points per month but Cryptic has stated a few times that subbers will NOT be getting C-Store points. Turbine lets you follow the entire epic story while Cryptic has greatly restricted where you can go in its F2P version.

10 bucks for the CE from amazon, definitely better than 20. If you dig ST, you may be able to get your free 30-days worth.

Pretty much this. I quite enjoyed the leveling (mainly the space combat, the ground combat is really clunky) but after reaching max rank even before my free month ran out and finding out that there is literally nothing to do, I bailed out.
But, for the 10 dollars I paid for my key, I got a fair share of entertainment out of it.

CO subbers will be getting 400CP a month, so if STO goes F2P i'm pretty sure they will get the same amount.

I did the same thing your about to do. The game is cool in concept and play but don't expect any kind of community or assistance. Its easy to get lost in high area's it seems. Over all I see the game as cool if your looking for something way off the board .
I am not sure why you would pay for the box, then pay a sub and then have to deal with an ingame shop that is every bit as bad as a gpotato game or Runes of Magic.
Like most of the people here have said, if you can get the CE from Amazon for ten dollars (still available) then it would be worth playing as long as you did not have to pay the sub or get suckered by the ingame store.
I hate to give Cryptic any kind of endorsement but at twenty bucks I'd say it was worth it so long as you go into it with the full realization that you may not want to continue to sub beyond the first thirty to sixty days, which seems to be the threshold that alot of players tire of the game at.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
While I think this game is definitely worth trying (it's obviously not for everyone, but there are those who really like it) I'd save your 20 bucks and wait a few months for it to become F2P. It's only a matter of time...
Cryptic finally reversed its position and added the 400cp per month, thats why it has a little question mark icon next to it, to let people know what it is since it was not on the original page. You can find a long thread about players asking for this here:
http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=117912
This was not in the initial Cryptic plan and had been made known in other threads but the large response from the existing customers made them change their mind.
I actually enjoyed STO over FFXIV unfortunately in comparison to new games. STO would have been much better if Crytpic had the time and money to properly do it imo. I'll give Cryptic that much that it was fun while it lasted. Of course it would be the same shoot em up ask names later theme. I think the biggest complaint is this demo of Star Trek that we got that was sold at the highest prices. If you look at it from a single player game perspective I'd say it's definitely worth 20 bucks.
I'd say 20 bucks is a pretty good deal for a single player game, go for it.
Now, if you're expecting a long term MMORPG you might want to look elsewhere, but for some quick fun I'll bet it will be worth it.

Two days ago it was $9.95 on D2D, for a one-day sale. If D2D and Steam go head-to-head in the coming weeks with holiday sales (like they did last year), you can almost count on it dropping even further.
If you don't expect much, it's probably going to be pretty cool. I bought it as soon as it came out. Here's what I thought was cool.
* Character customization
* Ship combat - they were simple, but simple in a way where one button can do several things.
* Having a bridge crew to boss around.
Here's what I didn't like
* Ground Missions - were more or less like Champions Online instanced missions.
* Space Stations - seemed kind of 'meh'
Star Trek is much more likely to be a good game than Champions. It really depends on what your expectations are and what you want to get out of it.
