Anyone remember the good old days of Atari, Nintendo and Genesis? Well, maybe the 20-somethings would know more...
Anyways, I miss the old arcade style beat-em-ups with the old combos and special attacks or the old platformers that Mario Metroid, Megaman and Sonic dominated through the early '90s. Recently, I miss the retro. Sure 128-bit sound and HDR lighting is awesome with a tablespoon of realistic graphics/physics, but (may sound crazy) I miss 8-bit. Ever since I gave away my Super Nintendo last year (which still works), I really crave that gamepad, sit-on-your-butt and button-mash-you-way-to epicness attititude the Mario Bros had.
Then I saw gameplay footage of Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game from Ubisoft, I facepalmed...it was heartbreaking. I wasn't going to chuck out 200 bucks and 12 bucks for the game. So this is my quest, find an 8-bit beat-em-up (Though I'm formally filing a query to have it ported to PC).
I've checked Mincraft and currently looking into Pokemon World Online. But I just simply want something free and what Ubisoft has for a game now. I've been searching for a good month and yet I haven't found anything really close (Dragon Saga has the beat 'em up, but it's no retro 8-bit).
So, I ask you awesome people of awesome epicness of pwn-taclar skills...I need a game like this. Here's a just a list of things I want to see in the game I'm looking for:
-Something like Uibsoft's Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game (Link Here)
-8-bit graphics and sound a must
-Platformer or beat 'em up...side-scrolling in general.
-MMORPG/multiplayer...accepting singleplayer games too.
-Gamepad support optional. Keyboard a must.
-Something I can just download onto my computer as a client or something.
"Shooter-90, why not download an emulator?" Good question. I have bad experience with them, trojans and worms mostly. Last one I downloaded had MyDoom and that was a long time ago.
Thanks if anyone can find one!

Trouble is, games like that are only really being written (or re-written) for phones and stuff now, so emulation is your best bet. Assume this is what you are talking about, but if not check out...

Roms are easy to find, and you'll be back enjoying Streets of Rage and Double Dragon in no time. I've never has any issue with viruses, maybe I've just been lucky, but scan stuff before you launch it and you'll be fine.

its an 8 bit style platformer from an indie dev, i got it in a pack with "world of goo" and "doc clock and the sandwich of time" and a couple others, very fun, sometimes dammed hard little game, theres also super meat boy, but that one appears to be more 16bit ish!
8-bit = finished games; their games had to work, because an update or patch wasn't possible.
8-bit = every game was unique and was never done before. Nowadays most genres have been milked and gamers aren't swept of their feet easily. WII is a good example: The 8-bit of 2010. A lot of new gamers discover gaming by playing on the WII. All games are new and fun to them. For most of us, they are simple remakes of Nintendo hits from the past.
Very odd that game is a PS3 platform release,i highly doubt many devs would attempt that.Personally i preferred the 32 bit genertion more, the 8 bit were very small [few hundred kb]cheapish looking programs.Yes the original Mario bros was cool for it's time and i guess dungeons and dragons.I of course played Wizardry and Might N Magic back then on 8 bit,but to find an action game,Double Dragon or whatever it was called is about all i can think of.That game[Scott Pilgrim] actually plays exactly like Double Dragon, which if i remember correctly had co op mode for 2 players,Scott Pilgrim has co-op for 4 players.
You would have to get into 32 bit for sure to find something like that newly released 8 bit game,as that imo is extremely rare.It is perfectly legal to play an emulation game if you actually own the original game,as to which i do and i do own several of those older 8/32 bit games.Examples i own Wizardry/Might N MAgic [sammy corp]several KOEI games,Double Dragon.
There is a retro link to older games online, where yo ucan actaully play them in a flash window, but i have never seen it actually work so who knows,i think you have to register to actually play the games. link
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Allow me to direct you to Doukutsu Monogatari, Also known as Cave Story. It's available for download for PC and I think you will find that it's very close to what you're wanting to play. (http://www.cavestory.org)
Note: it's single-player, and more like Metroid than a beat-em-up.
