Gonna be a really interesting year here at the forums as we got some highly anticipated games coming out. Some games with really strong followings.
Personally myself i see the top 5 games that are being hype going to be causing alot of really interesting threads to pop up. Both for and against on each game. So the fire this next year is going to be rather hot, most likely a lot hotter then the current year. Not sure if this is a good thing or not but for myself it's going to be hard to keep in mind that people have really strong opinions on the up coming games that i may have differing views on.
What do you all think of the coming year? You going to try and defend the game you've choosen, stay away from the forums each time a game is released or something different?
Comments
Defend "my game", diss the rest.
2011 will be very amusing year for sure.
So many dreams to crush!
All i know is that i am going to end up broke and divorced this year. So many good games ;(
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

To put it in a nutshell, our society is about to hit the fan, grades are dropping, obesity is going up,childhood the USA is going to lose its super power status before too long, but hey, as long as we have a cheap method to babysit our kids, all will be well no?
Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I'll probably stop visiting these boards once GW2 gets close to avoid the negativity toward the game and to keep that excitement. Will play it for some months then ease back in here once the attention on the game slows down some.
But yes! Interesting year ahead indeed.
Woah man, that's what I did. Recommended ++
if it's any consolation, the last 10 years taught us that two thirds of that good games will release with a tenth what they promised they would have, will suck in the tenth they do have, and not be what you expected. at all.
should save you quite a few bucks and your marriage
Why does it matter what anyone else says? Play the game that you like playing. If someone else doesn't like it, screw 'em.

My predictions:
SWTOR is going to dominate 2011 . Will probably sell between 3-5 million boxes in the US and possibly retain 750k to 2 million subscribers in the US. Worldwide I can see it doing between 2-5 million more in box sales WW but retaining fewer than 750K of those subscriptions.
The reason I see this happening follows the trend one can find when looking at BioWare "Story" RPGs worldwide. They do well in the US and UK but fall off in mainland Europe. In Asia people probably dont know who the hell BioWare is.
Regardless, SWTOR will, by the end of 2011, be the 2nd most populated MMO in the US (probably 3th or 4th in the world) and be regarded as a success by BioWare and the media and a failure by forums trolls that think that an MMO has to kill WoW to be successful.
The game will become profitable half way through 2012.
GW2 will go into beta during the summer and, unfortunately, get pushed to a 2012 release . It will be a big seller in 2012 but when people see that the stars are not what they were promised it will have a large exodus and only GW1 fans will be left.
Rift has to launch before SWTOR or it is going to get buried and forgotten amongst the EA marketing machine. If it can launch in February it has a chance of making its money back and garnering a population before it gets gutted.
Playing: Tera, BF3, ME3
Waiting on: Guild Wars 2
We less than a month away from 2011 and GW2 is not in beta. Do not expect it to come out in 2011. Hell it might not go into beta until fall of 2011.

pretty much nails my thought's.
Star Wars + MMORPG + the EA machine = massive sale numbers then by end of 2011 only the SW fanbois (myself included) and a few stragglers from other MMO's will remain and have TOR hovering at the 1m mark.
GW2 has promise so much promise can they deliver I too believe it will push to a 2012 release.
Rift - MEH but i hope it does well enough for Trion to push forward with One Earth
Haha you make it seem like 1million would be so bad!! IMO, more than just fanboys and stragglers will be retained. SWTOR is going to garner a healthy population in the US. It wont be WoW of coarse but it will hit all of BioWares projected numbers and green light a few expansions over the next 5 years.

The upcoming 2011 (with highly anticipated games like GW2, Rift, SW:TOR) reminds me of the 2008 season (with highly anticipated games like WAR and AoC).
Question is will history repeat itself. I pray it doesnt. But even I know many of these upcoming games are not 'the answer' to the current MMO doldroms.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
You know something the rest of us don't?
I was thinking the same thing, Czzarre.

There was a press release that stated blade and sould & GW2 would start beta roughly at the same time. That same time was mid to late 2011. A game needs from 6 months to 1 year of closed beta before launch. Right now we are a month from 2011 and GW2 is not in closed beta.

Unfortunaltely your last statement is pure opinion. I certainly hope this is not more sandbox pandering as that is getting quite old.
The reason why MMOs are in the "doldroms" is because WoW success gives a false perception of the actual number of MMO players. The actual MMO gaming population is smaller than the WoW population. In other words these companies are chasing customers that are not actually there.
I can imagine that 70% of WoW players are not MMO gamers....they are WoW players and never will touch another MMO.

No offense, but once GW2 has been released, I'll have better things to do than tilt at windmills with you lot. The game won't need me to defend it anyway. I suspect reviews and sales numbers will do that handily, all on their own.
Be careful friend. Often a man will promise the stars and leave you with dirt.

The source for said press release was the most disreputable site around and no one else confirmed it. I suspect a beta to start around late summer and release late next year. They had a pretty decent playable demo for this last summer so it's possible the release could get pushed to 2012 but I doubt it. Time will tell.
I still stand by the fact of no current beta means no 2011 release. SWTOR had playable demos two years ago btw so GW2 having a small area playable means nothing.
If beta starts in spring or summer it is possible the game will come out in the fall but not likely. If the beta starts in jan or feb I can see the game lauching in december of next year.
The fact that you WANT the game does not mean you are going to get it next year. Believe me I want it too but logic should be you guide here, not desire. In other words, dont get your hopes up.

To the contrary 1m would be immense for any game, I agree with your statement from further down the post

Tor will settle at a very healthy population that as you say will have achieved everything Bioware wants, the majority of development paid for by initial sales and then a large healthy profitable population.
I would never want TOR to be WOW theres a point when so big is too big certainly in a game that thrives on community.
Ohh boy oh boy I can't wait to visit TOR and GW2 forums next year...
It's just not fair to pick on the poor lower budget Rift...
Rift has a chance and a window at making money. The MMO hoppers will blow through Cata by mid January and begin to get bored of the gear grind by mid February. If Rift launches in the window between February and SWTOR launch with at least a couple months in between it is entirely possible they will catch the MMO hoppers in between games and the little 50 million dollar Rift will make a chunck of Cash.

Until ArenaNet says it themselves, anything else is just speculation.
High expectations:
Rift and The Secret World
2011 belongs to the games with more character customization. Both of the above will supply the most of this, having identified tinkering with one's characters and min/maxing to be a truly addictive part of MMO gaming. TSW is also the first 3 faction PvP game in a long while, and will probably end DAoC's servers once and for all.
Medium expectations:
Guild Wars 2
For once there will be some meaningful PvP (castles, territory, resources) and all the goodness that real PvP'ers want. However, it eschews the not-so-real PvP'ers (gankers) in the way the progression is set up, and thus population might fail early no matter how awesome it is for the RvR crowd.
Low expectations:
Star Wars: ToR
The BioWare fanboys or playing-WoW-but-want-to-find-something-else-boys will probably pick up this box. Then find out it's a story driven casual game with no PvP or endgame. Let's toss it in the pile of big IP licenses so far already eh? Conan, Warhammer, Lord of the Rings and now Star Wars. Some will say BioWare can not fail. This is BioWare's first MMO, like it or not, and they have everything to prove. They are following the old '100 man studio, 5 years dev time' blueprint, and thus must fail, IMO. Compared to The Secret World, they have 3 to 5 years less pre-production, 3 years less development time, half the studio size and about the same budget. For what? An Online RPG, not an MMO. BioWare are also notoriously bad at multiplayer balance, if you've played any of their multiplayer enabled RPG's you will know it.
Really low expectations:
TERA.
Market your game to PvP'ers then add carebear features to your focus tests? Not gonna fly. There is also no reason an asian grinder should ever cost money unless it's labeled as medicine for compulsive sadomasochists.
