I don't hate wow I dislike the hype and following it has for just being OK. It's about as overrated as halo is honestly.

I'm not actually playing anything "religiously" right now, but I am in a few NDA betas.

I'm also in the process of making a test-of-concept design for a game that basically has the crafting and skill system that all mmorpgs are missing :).

After SWG was dumbed down and L2 became super inflated, it took a long time, but I turned to AION, which I think is quite a ways better than WoW. It is more dynamic in many many ways and way more gorgeous. I'm not subscribed with it, but it's probably what I like most on the themepark side. The ONLY problems people talk about are leveling (which I don't really care about how long it takes as long as leveling isn't the only thing you can do). The "west" style gaming of the "quickie" console play is lessening the quality of the WORLDLY aspect that mmos need to have to separate themselves from just another game. Which is exactly what WoW...LOTRO...WAR... AION.... XXXXX....and XXXXX  feel like to me.

Darkfall and Mortal have actually done the best at creating an mmo that resembles a world in this new genre, but I couldn't spend my time leaving my computer power on for macroing (DF) or playing a broken game (MO). That was in its first few months though, now it's probably a better experience, but with a soft cap, therein lies its problem and the eventual lack of variety.

As I said... the only way to really be satisfied now (seeing the directions that mmos are taking) is to make your own... It's also fun. No I'm not seriously going to make an mmo, just make a game with some of the concepts that no one has ever seen before.

I guess I "hate" (strong word but whatever) more WoW community than game itself. WoW community is just like Garfield in christmas mood: Gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme, its MINE! Or you see ppl like: You are shit in shity equipment GO AWAY. Ofc not everyone is like that but most of community (on server where I was and ppl who I met) was.

Its almost always like game mechanics affect the community. At least I feel that way, after WoW I tried Lotro and I was amazed how ppl can be helpful here and they want to group all the time etc (NOT only for group quests :D). Ofc there were some asses too but its everywhere, depends how much of em is there. WoW is kinda ok game with too solo focused leveling and boring dungeons (Wotlk ones). Last line is reason why I left.

Now I play EvE and Im happy so far. :)

Played: Lineage 2,Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online, LOTRO, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, EvE online
Tried: KAL Online, Face of Mankind, ROSE online
    Playing: CS:GO

I can tell you right off the bat that a lot of people hate WoW because of its success.

I have talked to many people about MMOs (I work at an MMO publishing company) and I find this to be a common trend among people that don't like WoW.

They view massive success as a bad thing.  These are the same people that think that the majority of the world is stupid and beneath them.  These are the same people that compare WoW to McDonalds and American Idol.

I actively play EQ2. I beta test for a game developer that makes casual games, and sometimes beta AAA MMOs in development. When I'm not doing those things, I play whatever else strikes my fancy....sometimes an FPS, sometimes an adventure game. I rarely play strategy games and never play any sports games except SSX3 which is an OLD (but fun) game.

I'm cautiously looking forward to GW2 and The Secret World.

I don't "hate" WoW, I just find it tremendously boring. I played it (alongside EQ2) for 5 years. I have played EQ2 a year longer than I played WoW.  For me, WoW just got more and more boring as time went on.

I play Guild Wars and some various single-player and lobby games.

Also, telling people that they have to be mature and respectful is usually just asking for trouble.

    Edit:

    Thark hit the mark perfectly.

    WTF? No subscription fee?

as some of the other persons already said before ... i dont exactly hate wow, or everything about it. but i only played it for one month and only fun fun thing about the game was play it with my irl friend who has really wacky personality. other than that, i didnt really like the design, graphics, animations, fighting ... one of the things i liked the game was the humor though :D

i havent been playing mmo for over a year now and it bugs me .. i want to be enslaved by some new big game again and feel thrilled of making a character, leveling it up and talk about the game with my other friends who also would be playing it but yet nothing has intrigued me with ways that i would actually try it out .. few of my friends went to aion only to come crying out (i knew it was going to happen so i didnt even want to try it out)

last mmo i played was AoC and i loved it ! then i had a break from it for few months and came back to only to see that all the players had fled the game and i couldnt find anything to do anymore ... felt like i was left alone ... didnt help that i already played the game with all the classes that i wanted to play it with and did all the content that the game had. i was bored and disapointed so i left for good i guess...

right now im looking up for GW2 mostly but im little bit nervous if the game is going to be too casual and fastly played to the boredom. im also looking for RIFT but i have feeling that its not going to be really that great. from single player games i have set my eyes on diablo 3.

I don't hate WoW, I just don't enjoy it. It's a game for people who don't know what an MMO really is and have probably never played one before, and will likely never play a different one again.

That said, I'm not playing any MMO right now as they're all following the WoW path in the hope of claiming some of their millions. I went back to my first love, EverQuest, a few months ago only to find that game has gone down exactly the same path - mercenaries to allow soloing, quest chains, and need I mention Plane of Knowledge?

I'll be happy when developers finally realise that the WoW model isn't working. Until then I'll be hanging around these forums looking for the next best thing and wishing for better times.

I quit playing WoW awhile back myself.   I just didn't like the rule changes they were making.  Too me, it was no longer enjoyable.

They have how many millions playing though?  It is kind of hard to say the model "isn't working".  Clearly it is.  But like everything else, it will eventually fade out.

It is a shame that nothing truely new and original has come out in awhile.

Since I don't hate WoW maybe I shouldn't reply to this thread, but I have never played it so I will.

I play EvE, Aion and GW(waiting for its sequel). I play them on and off, since I always get fed up with an MMO after a while and need a break.

And actually, maybe I'll just try out WoW these holidays. Why? Because every now and then the idea cross my mind that you are really missing out on an important part essential to crasp what the beginning of this century is all about, if you have never entered the world of Azeroth. WoW does not only represent a turning of the page to the game community, but defines in its way the character of our time.

What do I currently play? I don't play anything right now. The last mmo's Ive played? EQ and Vanguard about 2 months ago. Why do I play Vanguard or EQ than Wow?

    - Both of these titles has a varity of classes.

    - Each class has their own flavor and has a specified role.

    - Telon is massive, seamless and immersive

    - Norrath has alot of diversity and is dangerous

    - EQ Community > Wow's community

    - EQ and Vanguard has risk vs reward

    - Both has a decent to a harsh Death Penalty

    - Both has no class builds...

    - Vanguard moreso, but both focuses on exploration

Basically EQ and Vanguard are focused on the traditional mmorpg principles. When I log into those games, I feel like I am logging into a world. When I log into Wow, I log into a MMOLG (Massively Multiplayer Online Lobby Game)

i am playing wow again... mostly  because friends and wife are still into it

i try to get them to try other games but they dont want to learn/ invest time in something new ...is the excuse anyway

i loved AOC,LoTR  thought CoH was fun and warhmmer was the only pvp i really enjoyed

(wow only did season 2and hated it)

when they changed the death knights tanking and dps to the current tree i felt that this is not wear mmo should be going

giving people choice and true custumistion should be the the future of mmo not take away even more choice to simplify builds to even more cookie cutter

why have the tree just learn the stuff as u level

the new quests lines i like but ive always been a fan of stories and lore

i found wow cause i was looking for a game like baulders gate ..WoW was my first mmo was totally hooked

The WoW model works for WoW, but every MMO ever since has tried to copy it and pretty much failed. Most MMO's find it hard to push 100,000 subscribers so obviously, compared to the once 26 million of WoW, the model doesn't work. WoW was a freak of nature but the developers don't realise it. They keep trying to copy it which means they get a very small subscriber base and further alienate themselves from people who are actually looking for an MMO to play.

    Vanguard here.

Sadly that one is dead from lack of players, and there is no replacement in sight either.

I don't hate WoW but I like EQ 2 much better.

I tend to bounce around a lot, but I enjoy playing EQ2 a lot. Pretty much just killing time until SWTOR comes out.

I use to play WOW, I left 2 years ago, right after the release of Wrath. Basically had to start the whole grind over again after doing it for 4 years, so I had enough.

I've been just jumping around from game to game, seeing whats available on the market F2p & P2P. WOW is definitly the most polished in most repects but I just can't get by the graphics anymore.

    Not actively playing anything atm.

I'm waiting for Rifts & Tera.

Im happy I left WOW, like others here the community is the kicker.

Im playing EQ 2 now and battlefield  bad comany 2 (vietnam ohh ya).

To me WOW now is like people who heat up frozen pizza in the microwave. They could care less how it looks or taste. they like it because they can just toss it in and 3-5 min later they can eat. Other true MMORPG's are like cooking that mizza from scratch. Waiting for the dough to rise and after when your eating it you can look at it and go "wow I made that". Unfortunetly this is the future for north america both in food and games.

I don't "hate" any game, because it's a game, FFS. if a game brings hate out of you, you need therapy. I dislike WOW. it is what it is, and some like, it, just not my thing. I'm playing EVE, and in the CB for black prophecy as well.

  • VyethVyeth Member UncommonPosts: 1,461

I'm sorry but the community is why I do not like nor play World of Warcraft.. There is more douchebaggery present in that game than your average FPS Clan.. It seems that everyone who plays that game likes to use the "I play WoW and so do 200 million other account holders..(Including the gold sellers and bots), so I am cool and you are not! RageRageRage! I R POPULARZ NOW, YAYY!"

You play WoW.. So what? it "happens" to be the game with the most accounts created, doesn't make you anymore popular and cool for playing it.. LOL.. Some of yall just silly..

BTW, as only to pour salt into the wounds, the games I have been playing are.. GASP, F2P!!!!

Thats right.. You peoples worst enemy.. And I have been enjoying myself like no other.. xD

Dont hate WoW, but i dont like what it has done to the MMO genre on the whole.

I currently play Wurm Online, before that Mortal Online, Darkfall, EVE, Ryzom, I prefer games which offer me a living world to some degree with player made substance, theres no depth or meaning in themeparks for me.
