I voted no. I did every BETA event. I don't hate RIFT just because it's the new kid on the block, it's just too much of something that's already out there.
The hype was reminiscent to Aion, in that the forums fueled it to be the next messiah. I think after watching game after game rise and fall for over 6 years not, the people on here would be a little more hesitant to make bold accusations about any upcoming title. When I actually played the game in Beta, I thought it was alright; but, it wasn't exactly, AMAZING! Not that recycling preexisting ideas is necissarily a bad thing; but, it has to be done the right way. I mean, you know Warhammer didn't work right; so, why would you take it's dreadful combat mechanics and use them on a new game. One of the core elements to a good MMO is the fighting; if it's too slow or makes you feel like a pushover at any time, it doesn't have much appeal. If you are going to throw players into a violent world where they will be constantly under attack by swarms of monsters that can plug them in one hit; the developers should at least make the player a force to be reckoned with.
Normal monsters should be cut down in waves with ease, leaving the invasions as more of a challenge for groups. Instead the wanted to make all fighting undesirable; leaving many players to avoid it if they can. I can't count the number of times I watched player after player go way out of their way to avoid killing an NPC in order to collect an item on the other side of it. That told me all I needed to know, just from that simple observation and it isn't that the players are lazy.
I predict that this game will be the next Aion. It will have a lot of subs the first month; but, as the new car smell wears off, the game will slowly wither away. Not saying it's a horrible game; it's just not what many people are making it out to be; which, tends to lead to grave disappointments later.

You know what wardog? I was kind of reading your post as a mild flame against Rift, but then I kind of realized, having played 2 of the beta's that you're right on a few points. I did run around mobs to get to a nod or some stick hang'n out of the ground to finish a quest.
I'm not sure if the monsters will be much easier in Terra, but the videos of dudes swing'n massive blades around knock'n crap over gives me hope that it could just an all out fun smash'm up game. It's a good thing I've seen videos of bosses that appeared hard because I don't nessisarly want to play dynasty warriors online...

For me Rift in it's current state in beta is a much more enjoyable experience then Aion, WAR, LoTRO, WoW, AoC.
I can only imagine what the future holds for Rift, but as it is now it's still the most fun i've had in any MMORPG i've played in the past 4 years easy...
Fun trumps anything else to me when it comes to MMORPG's and Rift is just really damn fun.....
No one on the beta forums says it's the Messiah of MMO's, but most of the beta testers do say it's the most FUN they've had in a long time.........

QFT. I remember all the rage about Aion how flying combat was SO revolutionary and rifting as well as the abyss with fortress crap was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread.
What I like is that they aren't releasing a steaming pile of crap like FF and most recent games have been. We'll see how the end game developes. I have a feeling PvP is going to be a joke because there's little to no hope of balancing all of the archetypes.
It's not going to be a game I buy because I found the combat to be rather dull, but a decent amount of people seem to think it's going to be great on here. With that said, I hope the game does well. Increased competition will only make GW2 and ToR step up their game.

Very good post, I think you did a great job at stating everything the way it is.
People have to realize that this isn't the first time a new MMO comes out that is alright, but not more than that. It's okay. As someone who has gone through more MMOs than a child could count I've gotten somewhat inattentive to new MMOs and the hype surrounding them. All but a few times it went the same way: People would be overly excited and speak highly of a fresh game, lots of people would preorder, yet it'd only take a month or two for that new car smell you spoke of to wear off and the population drips away as masses realize it isn't as good as they thought it would be.
I enjoyed what I played of the beta (levels 1-15) it was a lot of fun and I think it could quite easily be the best fantasy mmo to be released since WoW . Two reasons why I proberbly wont buy it at the start .
The first is I wonder what sort of longevity it has . Max level is 50 and I played from 1-15 in two days play . Admitedly these were the very early levels which are normally quite fast to level in any mmo . I would like to see reports on the endagme before I even thought about buying it .The map of the game world seamed quite small to me but again it may be just he beta . I like to expolore and if the game worlds small it means your most likly going to have seen it all within a month .
The second is it the fact its the only game I've played that does'nt run well on my computer even at the lowest settings . I have a 9800gt 1gb,4gb ram and dual core 2.8 ghz . I update drivers regulary and I ve not messed with the nvidea settings . I do msconfigs to make sure nothings running in the back ground and my pc is clear of viruses etc . ( I did an online check as well as the standard macaffee one ) . The thing is I'm not alone as this game seams to run well on some rigs and not others of similar specs . Some people I know say they can run it on high settings on similar spec to what I have . I can too but certainly not smoothly . (to give you some idea how my machine handles other games lotro I play on max settings and Age of Conan on high with a few tweaks here and there )Also the lack of AA makes the game look quite jagged . Then again this is a beta things may improve by release . Overall its something I can see myself playing sometime in the future when I see it on offer for maybe 10 pounds but certainly not at 35 . I also have my doubts whether it will be worth 9.00 a month sub although depending in the endgame it may very well be worth that .
I have enough doubts and technical issue with the game to hangfire .So my no is really just a no on release it may very well be a yes in a few months time .
The more of this game I see, the more I think I'd like it. My concern is that I'll really love the leveling experience and then get to cap to find out that the only thing to do is slay dragons/other players for loot. Seriously... after 6 years of WoW, I'm sick of PVE.
I have already pre-ordered. Participated in 3 of 4 betas and am really looking forward to release. I have beta'd many mmos over the years and this one has been incredibly smooth. The most fun I've had in a mmo in years. Years.
Not going to postulate or spew my mmo history like most tend to do. I don't need the prove my mmo experience to somehow rate enough to have a valued opinion. Just adding some positive feedback to the overwhelmingly negative in this post. I think a lot of these "players" seem to have some kind of self induced mmo snob complex. This game really does have many appealing qualities.
Instead of getting on the "this is just like every other game" bandwagon, try the game for yourself. It is NOT like every other game at all. It has similar (aka now standard features one now tends to expect) mmo qualities with it's own flavor and take on traditional mmo play - including classes, talents, questing, crafting, instances and pvp.
I particularly enjoyed the poster that compared buying a new car to previous cars. Yup, still has wheels. But it is better than previous cars. Funny, that.
Instead of moaning that this game is "just like every other", get off your soapbox and provide feedback to the Rift forums where it will be far more useful and productive. If you don't like something, tell them what/why so it can be addressed. QQing will not help the game improve. And if you cannot be bothered to be constructive or provide useful feedback, then moaning about the game's lacks (according to you) is just so much more uselss spam.
"You" referring to folks in general, not directed to any one individual here.
I've had some incredibly BAD experiences in mmo betas in the last few years. Rift is not one of them. Not by far.
shame that most people on mmorpg.com who aren't interested in rift and not played in the beta would vote no anyways, can never get an honest poll on this forum.
M
Actually, it is/will be skewed in the opposite direction. People who don't like it aren't going to buy it, and will poll negative, while people that DO like it but won't be buying it will poll positive to support the game.

M
Honest poll? This poll is in the Rift forums. Anyone who is not interested will not likely vote "No" or anything else because they won't find this poll.
I did not sign up for beta nor will I play it because I have no interest in the game. It is too much the "same old, same old".

I have been in all the betas. I already pre-ordered and subbed. While I like the game, unless things change, I only plan on playing for 6 months because there doesn't seem to be enough content to keep me past that.
Also, I did some quick math to estimate when I will hit the level cap (50). It took 3 sessions to get to level 27 (current cap). That was about 25 real life hours. Let's say we triple that time effort to get to level 50. That would be about 9 more sessions or 75 more hours. Let's also double that to account for the tweaking of progression for release. To me that means most veteran players will hit level 50 in 24 playing sessions or 200 hours.
Like I said, it is early to tell, but they have me for a while. I have enjoyed playing their game over everything else i have tried lately.
This is the first time i seen this much division over a game and its still in beta and pre order. All I can say done 4 bet's witll finish them up but I will not get the game it is not for me.

See Aion. It had the same hype and raving as this game. Blah blah WoW killer blah blah this feature blows WoW out of the water, that feature is so much better. We'll see how things play out. I hope they have a good launch and a good game, but having played through 2 of the betas I think comparing it to WoW is simply unrealistic.
lol I brought EVE too( for a fiver ) . I ve always wanted to try it and Rift would'nt run well so thought give EVE a try for a few months till Rift comes down in price .
if I like it I may end up staying with EVE . who knows .

AION, IMO, had a critical flaw: everyone sprouted wings. While some may view flying as an advantage, not everyone can get into their character sprouting wings. Just weird and not conducive to mainstream play.
I didn't play in the beta, so I voted that I didn't I am still on the fence about Rift though. but in the last 5 mins while writing this, I did kinda get hyped up by the video on their front page lol. Hmm we'll see. Looks damn good though.
I've played in the beta for RIft and I've done some betas of other games as well. From what I have seen so far it seems pretty solid, there isn't really anything glaring that people are having to make excuses for. The game runs properly (1st priority in my books), gameplay is solid, the world and lore feel original but accessible. I think that the game is worth the hype and anticipation.
Well this is a small part of game chaging......coolness you missed! I was there. These battles a freakin awesome. I have beta tested nearly every mmo for last 10 yrs......and nothing has been nearly as epic as this!!!!
Copy and paste this address below..... into your browser.....and Watch Epic Golem SERVER BOSS Event fight.
Entire server can get into ......has to ....ump in and start smacking on this thing. The fight lasts a very long time.....with multiple huge knockbacks and the thing heals up. Once it's dead and the event is over ....you get to clain rare epic loot.
Hate to see so many people miss out on this very cool...and fun game. It is not just a WoW copy.....its like many games rolled into one....with some twists. It's so much fun. Breathe of fresh air to play. Like the video....pass it on.

I have been in all 3 betas and Rift is almost exactly what I am lookin for. Would like better crafting, but oh well. I will be pre-ordering the CE in a few days
I second this motion! This game has changed drastically since beta 1.....I have played all the betas since.
All the Haters out there need to see the proof......PROOF that Rift is More than meets the eye.
copy and paste this address into your browser to see video of EPIC SERVER EVENT BOSS Fight....these happen ramdomly
take you by surprise.. These are Not instanced and the entire server has to get involved to bring this huge boss down
and it pays out huge epic loot.
copy paste and watch this!!!!

It's not Vanguard or AC2 (first MMORPG and missed), but I like the dynamics of this game. I just squashed my LOTRO (boring after playing rift) account and debating about squashing my station pass. Although I love Vanguard, but with no love from devs. I have to move on..

I second this motion! This game has changed drastically since beta 1.....I have played all the betas since.
All the Haters out there need to see the proof......PROOF that Rift is More than meets the eye.

take you by surprise.. These are Not instanced and the entire server has to get involved to bring this huge boss down

It's not Vanguard or AC2 (first MMORPG and missed), but I like the dynamics of this game. I just squashed my LOTRO (boring after playing rift) account and debating about squashing my station pass. Although I love Vanguard, but with no love from devs. I have to move on..
