I don`t want things for free, so I can`t empathize. My free-too-play restrictions would be a kick in the butt, and how is that better?

Dont you love people complaining about free to play?

You must live in a bubble world inside your head where companies dont need to make money to pay employees... employees that make content.... content that you buy... so the company can pay employees... so they make content... that you buy... etc etc

    Are people stupid ?

Game has good graphic, but could not hold my interest. Played 18 months from launch, but then found my self where i could not find the motivation to log back in. Combat system is ok, but no big selling point for me.

I had lots of fun playing this game. Took a year break and came back to roll a new character. Everyone I knew was gone. Guilds I knew are no more. Still I played some, but uninstalled the game due to bad community. /back to single player games

ridiculous, AoC has the best most open F2P systen of all MMOs played the first 2 months completely free then just wanted to get a sub to support the devs. You will hardly notice any restrictions until level cap, so your statement is plain silly, just shows the freeloaders entitlement

game is alive and kickingnow with single server tech from TSW, so one freeloader more or less doesn't make a difference

Free to play without restrictions. Interesting concept. Ever stop to think how a business model like that would change the game?  Income for keeping this game alive has to come from somewhere. If not from subs  it would be a cash shop full of play to win items for sale and basic items you would need to get through the game. Right now the cash shop is full of cool vanity gear or low level power items you can take or leave. Nothing you need to get through the game, or epic drops that over power raid drops or boss drops. If the game went wide open FtP the cash shop would be their only source of income and be full of pay to win items. It would ruin the game big time. The present FtP model was arranged carefully to avoid a pay to win scenario. AoC needs to stay in the black, that is a financial reality. If you don't support the game enough to drop some cash on a sub, or a little on the cash shop now and then, it really can't afford to carry you along. Sorry about that.

Why do I not play this game?

Let's see, where to start. Keep in mind, I played this game when it was new, I kept going back to see if it was any better, each time ended in me cancelling and leaving the game bitter.

First and foremost the melee combat is horrendous. I feel like I'm playing whack-a-mole! Not only do you have skills that take up skill slots, but you also have direction of swings, and each skill has a swing direction. It really distracts me from other aspects of the game, especially when fighting. While I'll admit it was innovative for its time, it was too much of a pain in the ass to really catch on. It could have been implemented a lot better. The combat as far as I know is still the same as it was back then (I tried playing again a few months ago).

After Tortage, the game gets grindy and boring. There should have been a lot more to the storyline, but there just isn't. You have this wonderful, and captivating storyline at the start and then... it's gone until level thirty. Gone again until 50. In between all of that are what seem like filler quests. Now, there are some zones that have really interesting storylines, but most are just the typical kill and loot.

Mounts in this game suck terribly. I prefer to just run in this game, it's less of a headache than trying to go anywhere mounted. Steering is awkward almost similar to trying to ride a horse in TES:Oblivion, and if you get hit once you're knocked off and unable to react for like 30 seconds. It's insane. They were going for realism I suppose, but it just seemed like you're punished for the privilege of riding a mount in this game.

After about level 50+ quests start getting scarce! Once I hit like 60 I was told the best way to level up was to grind elite areas. At least in FFXI grinding was somewhat interesting with skill chains. It was just plain boring in this game.

The mountainous terrain in zones, while absolutely GORGEOUS are just so terrible to travel through (10x worse if you're MOUNTED).

The dungeons are rather uninteresting, and the community is so scarce nowadays at lower levels, you're just better off not doing any at all. Forget asking for help, if there happens to be anyone around they either won't answer or just troll you.

Crafting in this game was probably the most idiotic. There are about 3 zones, purely devoted to resources depending on your race and everything is pretty much learned and farmed in these areas. I don't know if it's changed or not since I last played, but it just seemed annoying. The people you don't see in any other zone are usually here, so competition for resources are high (ore and wood mostly, there are different animals all around this zone for leather and plants for thread). I've never been much for crafting in games, I've always been more of a gatherer.

I guess overall, I didn't like the feel of the game. I did love the music and how pretty the zones were though. I also LOVED Tortage. The whole time you were there, you felt what your character felts. Hot, sticky, stinky, dirty. It was just an awesome zone. I have a feeling had they made all of the other zones as rich in story as Tortage, the game would have had a better chance.

I do Play Age of Conan and it is by fare the best MMO out now. The longevity og the game is just amazing when you compare it to all sorts of other shit out there that is hyped up to the eyeballs before it's dead 2 to 3 years later.

Age of Conan is in the fortunate position of being run with an exclusive MMO developer on the developers own unique graphics engine. No game you play will resemble a Dreamworld game from FUNCOM.  Also when FUNCOM make updates to one Dreamworld game (like The Secret World for instance), some of those updates will also find it's way into Age of Conan. So the game is alive and kicking. Back this summer AoC increased it's population a lot and I though it's happening. The tide is finally turning and AoC will finally get back all it's 100 000's of playes that it once had. But yet again it sort of stopped there and population is still the same.. perhaps slowly growing, but not AoC comeback style.

The Crafting is however getting a full revamp either this February or March, so I am hoping that this finally will get people back into the game. Such a good game.

Nice, detailed post, I agree with some parts, while others are just a matter of personal taste I think, for example the combat. That's one of AoC's unique elements, and it won't change, so if it's not your liking, then there's not much you can do... except playing with the caster classes.

I agree with the personal story part. I love it and understand why it's unfolding the given pace, but it'd be much better if we'd get them more frequent, like after every 5 or 10 levels... And yep, the zones have great stories in them.

Mounts... agree :) I think it was somewhat upgraded when we got the race track near Old Tarantia, but I admit it's a bit clunky. That's why I use my mammoth most of the times, mammoths are ment to be slow and clunky :)

Also agree with the sparsely placed xp in the upper level range, they knew it well too, that's why there's Turan added. It helps a bit on the issue, but still, you'll probably need to run some Villas or Slaughterhouse.

Mountains and dungeons, personal taste I guess. I love to exploring the mountains, and I used to say AoC has some of the best dungeons. For the population, the server moves and then merges (for preparing the single-server tech) helped a lot. A few months ago (even before the merges), with my latest leveling ToS I've ran Black Castle and Sanctum with an on-level PUG, formed through LFG in chat (without any guilds involved, just random strangers). And it wasn't a letdown as Bill's catchphrase saying it in the videos :) there were a few wipes, and lot's of fun.

Crafting: the gathering part is cool (true, a bit tedious sometimes), and the crafting itself is/was decent, but I think it's a matter of personal taste again. However, it will have a complete revamp... Soon(TM). Hopefully. :)

Music, graphics and Tortage, I love them too. Agree on the making "all of the other zones as rich in story as Tortage". While they've added some extra quests and voice-overs during the years, there's always room for more.

Yeah personally it is because they lock the expansion and AA tree behind a subscription (even for people who actually purchased the expansion), and the time between content updates is just too long to warrant a subscription.

It really is bizarre since it is the same company who does the amazing B2P model of TSW.

As much as I love the game, I agree. The f2p model is nice, much, much better than it was before the revamp 1 year ago, but this Godslayer issue is never "clicked" to me either.

I personally don't mind it, since I never liked the rise of the Grind it brought in game :) and if I go back I used to sub anyways. But that's just me. Looking at the model objectively, it's a pretty dumb restriction, to let folks buy the expansion, and still unable to access it without a sub. I think it's counterproductive for the game as a whole.

Think the game is growing as of late. There is a lot of anticipation for the Crafting revamp which will change much of the economy and the incentives ingame. I am looking so forward to that. Guilds are getting new people over this upcoming revamp. So me, happy enough these days. Can start new toon, do any dungeon.

I will one day resub to play AOC, but it looks like there's nothing better for theme park games. I'm usually a sandbox player, but we don't have AAA teams to make good sandbox excet for the up and coming EQNext.

With that being said, i currently dont play mmo's since im busy and school and work. MMo's take too much of my time, but when i will start playing one again, it will surely be AOC, the game looks a lot better than before.

One thing i want to know, how hardcore is the hardcore server? What's the risk of death in that server and everything else?

I personaly dont play it because it requires to be a sub in order to play the advanced content.

It's a fake free to play like swtor

It has been a while since I played, but what I still remember is :

    - I loved the combat system. Especially melee was very satisfying to play.

    - Loved Tortage looks and it also had a nice progression pace.

    - Liked the graphics style with the semi historical outfits.

What made me stop playing though :

    - After Tortage, boring quests with follow ups needing to go back to the same spot you were before. Sometimes several times, making me scream at the screen 'Why the hell didn't you bloody tell me the first time, you bastard!' Crappy themepark questing ftl!

    - Long loading screens.

    - Having to travel through Old Tarantia everytime I wanted to go to some other are started to piss me off at some point. I hated that city.

Atm I would never play a MMO like this. Apart from the combat it is all kind of meh.

Op i just went back to the game about 6 weeks ago and the graphics were not the same as when it launched. They now look awful, low end graphics, like they purposely turned them all down to support f2p.

I know once you get past the linear starter isle everything gets better, but the starter isle looked so bad and was boring,i couldn't go on and i sort of liked the game when it launched. Now from what i saw i will never go back to it again.

Pretty much this.  I say I like an open sandbox but I tend to actually max level games that have a clear strong story line all the way through like GW2, STO, and a few others.  I still return to AoC from time to time to explore and level a little.

Because hitting 4 buttons in the same order over and over just to fire off a skill is obnoxious, not fun. The combat system is awful once you get used to it. It was really cool for a short period and then it was just a big chore that added nothing to the game.

I reinstalled this game after having played the beta many years ago.

Switched from f2p to premium once I hit level 20 (only 23 atm) and didn't really notice any changes.

That being said, having a blast with the game and can't wait to see what's in store for me!

Seems like people are divided when it comes to Tortage, but I personally liked it. Only problem is that it's very hard to keep track of all the quests, since they send you to different places. It's very easy to do 3-4 quests in an area and notice that a few other quests are now gray.

I think that if a lot of people were willing to give this game a chance, Funcom would be able to revisit it and shape things up. The game itself is good, but I'd like to an update to the interface, launcher, forums and other things like that.
