in first screen for about 5 seconds it feels like maan now im in a living world as a living being.
then it starts
1.you are forced to ride the railroad, try to swim somewhere, you can for about 10 meters, try walk through the bushes, you cant, try to fight with your own style,no way,Guitar Hero nonstop comes to my mind, try to customize you character like the way you want,no chance its the superpower way or the highway etc etc etc etc,not interested of buying tickets to this train.
Some reasons why im not playing it,i do still have CE but someday im gonna smash it to pieces with hammer or something nice and maan im gonna enjoy,it will give me some good moments at last, thats for sure.
There are a lot of reasons that people don't play this game i'll name a few.
1) High pc reqs - not everyone cares to have the latest and greatest in the pc world, this was a problem at the launch of the game.
2) leveling in this game is probably one of the worst i've played, zones are essentially instance etc. The starting area is nice but after that this game falls off hard.
3) This game has always toted the combo feature, while some people like it, others (like myself) hate it. The combat basically is a love it or hate it deal.
4) Melee vs casters, this is pretty much an direct cause from the combat feature. Casters have a huge advantage over melee and this hasn't changed from launch.
5) the pvp/castle sieges in this game never really developed into what was promised.
AoC is one of the few games I did not beta. I bought it the day it released. And it was a horrible experience from the moment I even tried to install the game... (My brand new DVD was bad and I was forced to download about 14GB of data - but at first I had no idea what to do - it just wouldn't work)
I quit playing for two reasons: Customer Service / Technical Support was almost as bad SOE's. In the first Six Weeks I never got a single reply to ANY request for help, either in-game or by email. All of my Support Tickets were ignored and probably deleted. The only help I had came from other players. And I might have tried to get by but every successive patch made the performance worse.
Now, at the time, I had a fairly high spec machine. It was a Core2Quad with 4GB of DRAM and SLI 8800s. But I could hardly move in the cities... then when I heard they were going to nerf my PoM. I just quit. And I'm NEVER going back. This game can die, just the way Tabula Rasa did ... from a lack of subscribers. All I know is that I don't want another "Funcom experience", ever!
And I apologize ahead of time if my ranting offends anyone. Its just this that this IP is one of my all time favorites. Howard's stories, and the adaptations of others, were my favorites at a young age. And I wanted this game to suceed so badly... Which just made my whole experience so bitter. Then again, I probably should even talk about it.
Why don't more people play Age of Conan ? I know it had a bad start but it's pretty nice now. It has the best grafix by far +Carnage, blood, fatalities, naked breast's, and in my opinion, the bet starting area, finest combat structure and least boring quest of all. The raids are fun and the expansion was nice. The planned content sounds good to. I have played Aion and beta tested Rift, DCU, and others but never found a replacement for this game......So my question is why don't you play? ....Poor PC ? Sour from launch ? Not enough advertising or hype ?
The graphics are great, the animations even greater, but it all comes at a high premium. Many of the issues don't seem like a big deal when you describe them, but when you play, particularly for a long time, they really detract from the game.
Still buggy: Example: upon logging in, my weapon floats further and further away from my body. After about 30 minutes of combat oriented play, it's pretty much swinging away at about 2 feet away from my hands. This was happening in beta, and still happening as of Fall of last year. Also, often high rez textures will get replaced by low rez ones for no apparent reason. The once highly detailed robe on my HoX suddenly looks like an out of focus tree stump from WoW. And no, I'm not using any progressive settings.
3 generations of ATI cards and they've all done these things.
The way skills like climbing, for example, are annoyingly implemented, if implemented at all. With 50 climb I'm crawling up a massive, perilous pillar near Tortage. But with 200 climb I can't climb a LADDER in the swamp?
While most of the the zones aren't horribly small in size, many feel extremely cramped and bottlenecked. Atzels Approach is RIDICULOUS in this respect. Though the xpac zones are much better, at least from what I experienced.
Crafting is "meh". While I like that you don't have to grind crafting for mastery, there isn't enough inventory space for you or your bank to keep ingredients. This is even after the itemization patch; it was nearly impossible, before.
I have nothing against instant travel. But since you HAVE to instant travel to get anywhere, it makes the world feel tiny, and disjointed.
The combo system is fun at first, but then it just bugs you.
Barely enough content. Lacking enough that the devs have chosen to give out X2 XP potions(in the past), and now allow you to level without doing a thing via alternative advancement. Starter Area may be one of the best, but it's also the only one you have. Yes, I know fanbois will go after me on this one. pointing out the expansion and new high level areas. I played as late as last Fall, guys. It's still lacking.
I often get tempted to renew, and I rarely miss an opportunity for a free weekend. But every time I play, I have fun at first, but then each of these things rear their ugly heads. By the time I'm done playing, I'm DONE playing.
for me its just lack of a better pc. I game on my lappy. It will run conan but the graphics have to be turned down and the details stripped out till it looks like im playing an old school mmo. which is bad for me because I can run the older ones at higher settings and make them look much better.
but, if I had a better machine, id be all over it.
Game world should have been the size of Hyboria and seamless. Classes are still not balanced. First day release bugs are still present. Crafting is still lousy. Gathering resources still sucks. Sieges are still fail. Game is a huge grind at higher levels. Game in general is just bad.

that almost sound like you read it from a brochure.
Population killed it for me, I remember at launch the pvp servers were a blast and i do actually recall having a good time ingame but the grind and lack of content in the mid level range killed it for me at launch...
I came back a few months after ROTGS to hopefully have picked up where i left off at after the launch month only to find dead servers aside from the PvE server wiccana, Still i loged into my toon and got him to the level cap pretty smoothly with the new content only to realize that the "End Game" was a bunch of rinse/repeat faction grinding quest for gear, a bunch of 5 man instances and some Shrines of Bori bs where i found myself mining and lumbering for end game currency.....
End game,Combo moulding, Dead pvp servers killed it for me....i had to move on.
P.S. I dont understand why there arnt more populated PvE servers....at its core its a great PvE game even you do run outta endgame content alot sooner than in most mmo's.
when i got to end game i was so disappointed. after all the content updating for all the years its been out the endgame just sucked ass. the raids were patheticly easy, they looked cool. but i was bored out of my mind and fell asleep in most raids and still won
and yeah the pvp servers are completely empty

Why i think most people dont play it is that it's not as easy as other mmo's. People have even said they like to relax and play (faceroll).
Most people say it's because of a bad launch but i'd really like to know what they are playing that had such a great launch. Most all games have had a bad launch so the real reason is probably their comp couldn't run it well, or their mommys wouldn't allow them to play, or they just couldn't handle the combat. I can believe any excuse except "bad launch" thats laughable if their playing any mmo's.
I read a couple of replys where they said it was "to different". Isnt that what everybody is crying for, something different?
Some people complained it was to group forced and they couldn't solo, then another says it was solo and they couldn't group.
People wants something new and different but if they get it they'll still run back to their old mmo's and faceroll the keyboard while they chat about how awesome a game player they are. Bottom line is there was too much work and not enough people to show off their wares.
I stopped playing AoC for two reasons; None of my real life friends could get into it, and In the 50's at least in my experiance the game just bored me, seemed to not have much content for 50+ but admittedly that was a long time ago, I'm sure it has evolved and gotten better since then. I always thought AoC was a pretty good game, and I still hope it does well, but for me if my internet buddies, and my friends aren't playing a game I probably wont either.
I stopped playing because RotGS is just not constructed to be fun imo. They decided not to mask the grind at all and put it on the surface, And i think this was the wrong move as I never wanted to log on and play. However the content before RotGS was fine and i had fun playing it.

First off AoC is ultra easy.
Secondly the game was unplayable at launch and Funcom did not come through on a lot of promises (ie player housing was suppose to be there from the start...but there still is not player housing). It is perfectly reasonable for a customer not to want to partake in a product that is built on lies and broken content
Thirdly this game is cookie cutter as hell when it comes to mmo's.
Aoc is not new or different. And you are right AoC has way to much WORK and that is the problem. RotGS is pure grind hell.

you play a necro ... off course the game seems easy to you (and you probably never player T3 raids or T4 6men/raids). But we can meet on TL and I will show you exactly how easy this game is

ive played every single class to 80 or the late 60's. this game is easy as hell. the only difficultly is, or was, getting ganked during quests if you played on a pvp server. raids are a joke. i raided all the way up to the end didnt do rotgs though because when that expansion first launched i couldnt even zone into grasslands without my computer exploding and melting. even though i could run the game at highest settings before that expansion with no problems besides the occasional crash or freeze up.

Because its extremely simple, extremely linear, and extremely instanced? It's hardly an MMO, and it's still missing almost all of its promised launch features. It has no distinct qualities, no reason to play it over other games. Feels just like the other WoW clones.
I was on one of the largest guilds at launch on a PVE server, and I got the Priest of Mitra level capped.
I beta tested it before then, and it was almost unplayable in most of beta.
Then when it was released it was much better. Tortage was really good, but its like a single player experience. Most people dont like to play single player games more then once, so Tortage, though very good, gets old after a few stabs.
When the world opens up, you begin to explore. Its NOT a bad game, but it doesnt have that longevity feel to it.
It has alot of good qualitys: graphics, gory combat, uniqueness, etc. But it just doesnt work afterawhile. Sort of like kissing a hot chic thats a terrible kisser, its nice at first, then you get tired of the slobber.
Why don't more people play Age of Conan ? I know it had a bad start but it's pretty nice now. Well I don't play it because most of what you name in as a strong point of the game has no appeal to me. Graphics? May have the best of any mmorpg but truth be told I don't find most of the other mmorpg's on the market lacking so that wouldn't sell me on AOC. Blood and fatalities? Well I got over the novelty of features like that after mortal combat. Naked breasts? Still like real life if I'm going to try for titilation heh.
Overall the game has no appeal for me I do feel they have come aroud atleast some since the horrible launch they heaped upon us but as I've said in the past I don't plan on doing business with this company until they can show that what stands now as their weakness is taken care of. TSW is around the bend and to be quite honest sounds more interesting to me now than it did early on and certainly is more interesting than yet another sword and scorcery hack and slash game like AOC.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
because the game is very boring after Tortage... I tried several times to get into it but I never got past level 45. I agree that the game has many cool things, but it just lacks certain important elements. Im even thinking of returning to WoW after 6 years! :P
Don't do it! I just cancelled my sub, the reason was, after hitting 85, it just turns into a big ass grind like aoc's xpac.
hit 85, then...?
grind heroics, grind rep, grind professions, grind dailies, grind some more then farm.
I grinded my ass off from vanilla all the way through Wotlk, just to do it again in cata?
The new pvp zone tol barad is worse than WG ever was and the new bg's are poor too imo.
edit: this may sound harsh but i was really excited about cata, but its just more of the same, wow has a formula with xpacs i noticed:
1. get to max level of xpac
2. grind through the xpacs dungeons for heroic gear
3. grind through the same dungeons on heroic mode for raid gear
3. grind through the same raid until the next tier is released
4. 2 yrs later a new xpac is released (return to 1.)
Someone has been playing World of Warcraft way too much. I think his mind has become infected by the same evil that blizzard sold thier soul too for this lame game to be as successful as It is. Wait a minute I thought we were talking about AoC here. The reason I don't play, Hmmmm that's a good question I did do the trial but didn't get very far because of having to work during. Perhaps I should try again and stop listening to all the negativity. Btw, how bad is the population these days? Server recommendations?
Server pop: Speaking for Set, a PVE server, I would say the game is populated enough but not busy or crowded. I kind of like the light population. You will see other players where ever you go, with the possible exception of resource gathering areas, so the game doesn't seem lonely. The busiest place is probably the starting zone. Everyone starts out at Tortage and from there fan out to different areas.
You won't be bumping elbows everyplace you go, competing for quests at every turn, waiting for bosses to spawn. But you won't be the only one you see out there either. I would say the game borders between light and medium population depending when you are on. Weekends are busiest.

Soured from launch.
Was looking forward to the guild vs guild action our guild got the 1st or second plot on the server and that game mechanic wound up not only being broken but given its implementation it never seemed like it would be as immersive or important as something like a shadowbane.
Background..I followed the game for 1 1/2 years before launch..never got in beta..bought limited edition software at launch ....played Day 1 and have made repeated attempts to get hooked. The last attempt was less than 6 months ago.
-I won't play because there is no faction vs faction conflict.I won't play ffa pvp.Batle keep warfare is still screwed up and limited.I view pvp mini games as denegrating and childish.
-Crafting was not finished at launch and despite some work ..still has major deficiencies and is poorly done...at best.I want deep meaningful crafting and Funcom does not share my view of what crafting should be.
-there is no housing
-I have seen little evidence that the conpany comprehends what meaningful faction conflict is or that they listen to repeated request from its customers for it.
Net net..this is s great looking pve game without many of the elements I want in a game
For these reasons..I wont play the game in its current state.I doubt I would play even if it were ftp.
I had an odd conversation in my head when I tried a free weekend with RotGS, as alternate advancement was giving my level 70-ish HoX a new level almost every day. It led me to this:
"Cool! it'll be a bit easier to get through these quests..."
"But wait, why do these quests when I can just AA to max level?"
"..."
The fact that I couldn't answer: "because I want to see how these quests end", that it really didn't matter to me, made me realize that AoC wasn't a game I wanted to sub to. So in a way, AA cost them an expac purchase and a 1 month sub fee. When given the choice to do nothing or do something in a game and I choose nothing... well, I can do that WITHOUT subbing to the game.
If the developer itself creates a mechanic that allows people to skip content, then they either lack content, or they know that that content isn't terribly good and/or enjoyable to repeat.
I think it's a beautiful game, it's just really shallow. Even FTP titles like Runes of Magic have more depth and held my attention longer. I don't think I would play it even if it went fully FTP, it's just that boring.

Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.
you play a necro ... off course the game seems easy to you (and you probably never player T3 raids or T4 6men/raids).

Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.
"The Pen Is Mightier Than The Demo"
Soured from launch.
Was looking forward to the guild vs guild action our guild got the 1st or second plot on the server and that game mechanic wound up not only being broken but given its implementation it never seemed like it would be as immersive or important as something like a shadowbane.
I can only speak for myself
