Oh damn, it had to be EverQuest.
In the beginning, it was all about just... just LIVING the game.
There was no grinding, pwning, dr00dz, set level paths, ph4t lewtz guides, and there was actually CUSTOMER SERVICE! (OMGA!) The thrill of not knowing where that path's next turn led was overwhelming to the point that you, or at least I, felt as if this was a little more than just a game.
I guess it was the mystery involved. The fear and unknowing of the future that made EverQuest Classic so enjoyable. It made it... lifelike in a way, which was just amazing.
The graphics and sheer massiveness definetly played a role, as well. I was into RPGs before EverQuest, so when the chance to actually SEE through your character's eyes came along, it was nothing short of stunning. Socializing with literally thousands of people like that game provided, instead of the usual 5 to 7 sitting around you at a table, was another thing that just grabbed me and completely hooked me on that game.
EverQuest was a like a massive and incredibly conveinent Dungeons and Dragons, and it essentially was in the beginning.
Although I may be ignorant of other games, I say that EverQuest's original community soon after it's release was one of the kindest of any game or community I've met since then.
Man, I remember the first time I went to the desert of Ro. I could hear footsteps of something big getting closer and closer, my heart started pounding like mad. I couldn't seem to get away from it, until finally I ran over a sand dune to find a Sand Giant staring me right in the face. Damn... that was the first time a computer game TRUELY scared me. Maybe it was becuase I felt so into my character and actually feared for my life. What I would give to go back to those days... awww that was fun.
Shame it's nothing like that any more. =(

Ive got so say that Everquest would be my favorite MMORPG, but its not a classic, (at least not
anymore with all the expansions). Even though i never played Ultima Online I actually voted on
it because it came out before Everquest. I had some good memories about Evercrack, i was so
addicted i would wake up at 5:00 in the morning before school to play. Everquest used to have
so many mysteries and the community was great because you could barter with real people, now they
turn their characters into NPC merchants.
EverQuest has my vote. If only they didnt expand their world like they did, it probably would still be a stable game. The world is too huge now, with very little people (prior to what they used to have.)
This statement is underated. The community, pre-Kunark, was droolicious! You could ask in says beside a player and type /ooc so he think you make a misstell, or understand it was a polite way to ask him without spamming the zone or sending a tell...and the answer was almost always extremely kind.
The nice players I have encouter, experienced and noobs alike, is simply astonishing. I was only a tiny part of this pre-Kunark community.
But, the worst usually chase the best in most cases, and it was certainly the case in EQ. Nice folks leave more then harsh folks. Nice folks been less numerous are outnumbered and bullied more and more and feel less and less desire to be nice and just want to be alone...then Afterlife & many uberguilds where borns and it was a catalyst to the downfall of the community, as they encourage the devs in their false believes that the future was throught raiding and soloing was not even worthy of been an activity for a dog.
Pre-Kunark, pre-guilded, EQ, was having an incredibly nice community...only such a community can lead to the developpment of the harsh uberguilds EQ have known after, because it draw the minority of harsh players together that are happy to tell non-raiders that they deserve to lack because they dont raid, which make them leave invariably. Afterlife cant prosper half as well in a community like WoW and I can only smile for it.
Raiding kill that nice community and replace it with lootwhores that will waste anything you do for 1 chance at a uber loot.
I recall levels 50 druids walking in noobs land, turning armies of noobs in wolfy, healing here and there, throwing a short lasting DS...helping...for the fun of it, multiples times a day, it was to a point where it was more normal to see such a person around then to see none. Afterlife & friends spent nearly no time there, and the little they do, they do because they remember how it was before...they dont really enjoy doing it.
Devs make choices, and they have a full room of good horses with a very few mules, they pick the mules for some lazy twisted reasons! Mules require less efforts then good horses, of course!

Holy crap, I used to play that! :P lol
The Realm Online, anyone? That game is ANCIENT.
Looking for something new.
Awww... How could you not include Lineage? It's very much "Classic" (Older then AC, AO, EQ and DAoC)
My vote goes for Other.
