Well I was excited for this game for well over a year now. Never got into the beta, but was at the store 10am when they opened to get my ps3 copy and I must say...
I am NOT disappointed =D. Even better than I could have imagined, the combat is like a better version of Ultimate Alliance, the story is interested, the quests are fun. I am having a blast. I can see why its not for everyone but as a long time MMO player this is so refreshing compared to the same old cooldown based rotation game.
I got this for $15 off(last minute and the preoder code still worked at direct2drive :P).
I haven't play a lot yet (only a few hours because I had to go to sleep), but it was all with m&k(have gamepad but didn't feel like plugging it in). So far I've found the controls fine. I think it would be nice there wasn't so much depth the menu's for no real reason though. They just seem bulky instead of wisely using the space.
But, overall I find it fun and they do get into the story lines if you wish. Like one quest not forced on you takes you around the city and explains the history of each area(not very in depth but uses a voice over).
My biggest fear will be balancing hereos and villians on servers(worries me in every game with factions). It seemed to me that there were a lot more hereos than villians.
I played DCUO during beta and absolutely loved the game. The only reason I'm not subbing to it currently is because I'm very involved with another game at the moment with IRL friends but will definitely get this when I can.
I'm considering buying this game, but what scares im are the videos where movements, actions, fights looked very very stiff, you mention Prototype in the review, but that game is nowhere near stiff, so is it like Prototype or?...

The movement is great in this game. All the animations are incredbly smooth. Give it a try it's a really cool mmo.
I absoletly love the misions as well. I started out with Batman as my mentor and you know you do a couple of run around kill these guys missions. then after about 3 or 4 of those I went into an instance and got to fight The Scarecrow with Batwoman. It was a really cool battle.
After trying the beta, my conclusion is its primarily designed as a console game ported to the PC. I think it will probably do well on the PS3 but will ultimately fail on the PC.
Also add in the fact that SOE is known for messing up MMO's as time goes by (IE: SWG, Matrix, Vanguard, etc...etc...)
I really can't recommend this game to PC players, but if your a console player hungering for a MMO, this might be the ticket for you.
I was on BETA the game animations are not smoth. Are stiff and the fly travel power feels like floating. The game has a "promisse to fail" on its fronthead. No wonder is SOE!
It is not a MMO its a console game with Role Playing aspects, it would be a sucess among Console players if the "greedy claws" of SOE had not ask for a monthly fee. Cash Shop + Montlhly + Game $$$ not worth it. The ONLY good thing thing in that game its DC Universe IP.
Remember SOE make most of their money seeling their game at launch, after that they are free to mess it up when trying to squeezy the orange for its last drop of juice.
Nice write-up, just recently became interested in buying this and you provided some useful tid-bits. I think this will be my b-day present to me, because I care. It sounds refreshing actually, considering I started an alt in WoW the other day (new server) and 84 levels look more like a task than an adventure at this point. (Three 85s already, plus tons of 70+ alts just have alt related issues.)
Quick question, would I be amiss buying a controller for this game on PC? Is it viable or is mouse and keyboard where it's at? I usually use a mouse, keyboard and a speedpad.
While I'm not certain what a speedpad is, if you'd rather use a yoke for a flight simulator, or a wheel for a driving game, then I'd highly recommend plugging in a controller for DCUO. it's simply more intuitive and better suited for the title's frenetic pace.
While i hear many negative things about this game and while im not really looking forward to only 6 powerslots, I feel like i still wanna check it out and make up my own mind about it.
PPL bashed Aion for months with negative and false noob comments and it turned out to be the best mmo ever so i think its important to make up your own mind.

No one needs to spend $50 just to see that most of the criticisms are correct. Pretty but content light, crappy UI and controls, especially if on PC with no controller, limited choices because of few powerset choices, absolutely nothing to do but combat.
Paying $50 just to see how "bad" a game is rewarding a developer for a bad job.
Is DCUO the worst game ever?
No.
But not an MMO worth $50 +$15/mo + cash shop, either.
Wait for the cheap rack, it will probably be there soon enough.
And irory of ironies about your sig, if depth is what drives a good MMO for you, DCUO will do nothing but drive you away.
Truth : Depth drives an mmo. Depth in Char creation/customisability.
Depth in Lore, Depth in Gameplay,Depth in story and quests quality. Depth in pvp and skills balance. Depth in Endgame content. So Burnvet i agree with you.
Still I would like to see it for myself before saying there is no Depth. And i dont care spending $ 50 and hav a bit of fun even if it does not last, cause then at least i will know for sure if its a piece of crud or A jolly romp. I would gladly give up a few movie nights and a few dvd's to rather check out a new game.
In spite of the HUGE amount of time and space MMORPG has given this game, (cost?), DCUO will crash soon due to the consule forced crippling of the UI and the lack of content.
If you are thinking of buying the game, do yourself a favor and wait a couple months. By then it will cost much less or even be in the bargin bin.
No I think it will succeed as they can simply patch in new content as the game grows. Bug fixes are a given for every new mmorpg, but they aren't horrible here.
Surprisingly I am not having much fun at all. I RARELY ever buy an MMO without trying first. But I love the DC Universe and such and I've been without an MMO for a while now. So I went with a lot of peoples declarations of "loving it" and it being a great game.
Normally I'm really into this stuff. Sigh. I guess I'm either getting older, harder to please, or both. Or maybe just turning into a curmudgeon.
I have the Sony pass to play EQ I and 2 and SWG and their other games when I'm not playing LOTRO and DDO or a few other online games; I'll buy this when I can afford it; 50 bucks is too steep for this right now, but it's great tha twith the Sony station pass, you have no subscription fees, because DCUO is included in your 29.99/month!

It's age. I have been similar to this feeling for quite some time now, Games have just been so bleh lately, I'm lucky thow and love DC Online so far. But I totally know what you mean

Wow what a shock MMORPG can't even get the negatives right. Which are
1) Not enough costume options when making a character.
2) Not enough power options.
These two alone gives it a FAIL in my mind. There are 3 things they needed to do right Storyline is the only thing they got right.
I played DCUO during beta and absolutely loved the game. The only reason I'm not subbing to it currently is because I'm very involved with another game at the moment with IRL friends but will definitely get this when I can.
Those are only negatives to you and not those who are currently enjoying the game.
