So in other words: if you play this game long enough, it will eventually grow on you? Isn't it how it is with pretty much anything? You do anything long enough and it will grow on you. It's a defeatist attitude: "the game sucks but since there is nothing else out there, I eventually grew to like it."
I'm glad that you guys are enjoying the game but I'm not in the same camp. My belief is that if the developers want me to spend my money on their game, they have to make me like it from the get go. Not having the game "grow" on me after playing for 2 or 3 beta tests. Besides, you guys haven't even tested the higher levels nor the end game. How can you be so sure about the game when there is no feedback on some of the most important features?
People have seen the End Game content and they said it was Amazing, this is comeing from Hardcore End Game raiders from EQ and other various MMO's, I'm willing to believe them when they say "Rift has End Game and it's awsome".
To each there own i hope you find a game you really enjoy and challenges you...
Amazing? Seriously? You won't blame me if I won't take your word for it. If you pick any recent MMO which failed and look at the posts made during beta, you'll find a lot of "amazings" flying around, and yet the games still failed... hard.
Just a question because I might have missed it in your posts, did you have a chance to play Rift beta?
* First beta phase, I was impressed. The gameworld looked good, it had a strong atmosphere one would expect from a single player RPG, and not so much an MMORPG, most of which, to me, come across visually dry and not evocative at all. The lighting, the textures, I really liked it (though admittedly, not the character models). Also the game had very few annoying bugs, and it just worked the way you'd expect it to work. So a solid first impression. Even though it felt "samey" I kept playing and leveling, to my own surprise.
* Phase 2, it began to grow a bit too "samey". I'd naturally rolled a new character now, on the other faction, and though I liked the environments more, this time the quest hub progression was beginning to grind on my patience. And when I took a break from questing to focus more on the rifts, I was, shockingly, bored stiff in a very short time.
This was sort of a revelation for me: I did not really have much against the rifts themselves; yes, they're a bit like PQs redesigned, and that's OK. What grinding the rifts made me realize was that I did not enjoy the core mechanics of gameplay in this game at all. The combat, the movement, the spells and abilities. Even the class system itself, where you had a lot of "choices", so to speak, but none of them felt different enough or impactful enough to me. This is one of my biggest problems in modern MMOs, you just don't have many "cool abilities", the abilities and spells have grown too conventional.
All in all, I realized the quests at least were distracting me from the meat of the game itself and keeping me busy - without them, I did not really like doing anything else, because I did not like the combat in this game. It's a bit like what I thought about LOTRO - I loved everything in that game but the combat and class system (though admittedly, I liked LOTRO much more than this one).
* Phase 3 & Phase 4, I found I was actually making an effort to keep playing. I returned to my beta phase 1 and phase 2 characters. I did roll some new characters to check back on the starting zones and to test other classes (so that I could keep on giving feedback on the initial experience as well), but ultimately I'd say the initial game design is not suitable to replay in such short intervals. I respecced my first character to a Chloromancer, a sort of healing mage, and did some more Rifts with him (the map was teeming with rifts in the last two phases, so much so that they'd become "the actual content", as the name would imply). The class felt a bit different, but again, I found I was even more put off with the combat system. And doing rifts back to back felt even more grindy than plain old mob grinding. I know that comes across as exaggeration but, to quote GLaDOS, "I'm being so sincere right now". Maybe I'm just more averse to this sort of stuff now.
So, no, Rift didn't grow on me. On the contrary, I found it less and less appealing with each play session. Ultimately I think it's a game that's well done, and polished, but I imagine what I find fun, rewarding, not to mention profound in a game and what the designers in Trion do are very different. Bard was relatively fun in group play, but even with that I never had the fun I had in playing a variety of the classes in, say, Vanguard. I tried to keep going and give helpful feedback, because I feel responsible to do so as a beta tester, but frankly I'm not sure I'd want to be picked for another beta phase.

I can see your issue here with the rerolling. Having to go through one of the 2 starter zones again and again can be become taxing. Especially when you do it in such a sort timeframe.
I did not have this issue because I only checked out one archetype on both factions and after I thought Guardian site was more appealing to me, I sticked to it.
For me I liked the combat. It still needs some tweakin in regards to a lot of abilities being on gcd. (Talking Cleric)
It kindof takes the momentum out of combat. But I'm under the impression they will investigate this and provide an upgrade.
I do have to applaud you for sticking out the beta and doing your duty by testing and giving feedback. A lot of people tend to forget this still is a beta fase and we are supposed to be testing.
To those feeling the urge: yes yes I know what you are going to say ... but don't start the whole beta is marketing ploy debate again, there are other threads for this.

Like i said before i hope GW2 works out for you and you find it challenging and fun... But i'm beting on a game i've played and enjoy and feel has the right tools to make a genuine AAA title i can play for a long time to come..

I was under the impression the people that have seen end game were still under the NDA?
Could your provide linkies.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
Ok the op wanted to know if the game has grown on me. The answer is absolutly not.!
I been in all 4 beta's, and I am not impressed.
This game just does not do it for me. I will continue to beta, as I did sign up for the beta, and will provide them with feedback, but I will not be playing this game when it launches.
After reading the full endgame feature list I'm fucking excited. Full progression raid system, all leveling dungeons with hardmodes that offer not only stronger mobs but randomized mob placement, access to new wings, random quests within dungeons, random bosses. The game will offer world raid bosses, a pvp ranking system with unlockable pvp souls, enterable rifts, daily quests, endgame advancement trough achievements, collections and crafting through daily quests and recipes off rep vendors. I could keep on going guys. As for rifts growing on me, I think I instantly enjoyed them it was the other stuff like the soul system, character design, quests, crafting and collections that grew on mE.

I think we all know promised features aren't actual features. We've all been around the block enough times to know better.
We know Trion has done a good job to this point, but that is no reason to assume the rest is there.

Arithion from Riftpodcast is a good start... Shes not allowed to go into detail about what she has played but she made it very clear that she has seen End Game and it's good, as she puts it real good. So there's no real reason for me to think shes full of shit. She has alot of experience in End Game Raiding so i take her word for it...

I am someone who was lucky enough to participate in the 4 beta fases with a normal key.
While the game at first kind of put me off (War feeling, low fps, been there done that, etc ...) the game slowly but gradually grew on me. With each fase the Rift identity slowly took over and pushed the WAR identity away. By fase 4 I was in a new world with its own right to exist.
I can't quite put my finger on what caused this ... excellent actions from the devs on player feedback (each beta fase got better), community, the world, ... I don't know.
What do you think about this?
Was it instant love or hate ... or did it have to grow on you to?
For me it was the other way around. First beta, very excited. Second beta, less excited about the game itself, etc. etc.
Don't get me wrong, Trion does a GREAT job at improving the game. No problems there. The game itself is just not what I am looking for anymore. I don't like the crafting, they did a terrible job with the races and for me the biggest issue; It doesn't feel new for me.

The collections are already in there. The crafting quests are in there too. That stuff starts early. I think people have seen the PvP souls...that's pretty definite.
I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe they skimped on what they said they were going to do. So far, what they said is what I've seen.
But, buyer beware and all that. At this rate though we're going to have a good idea of the game's content by the time it releases.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Did the opposite to me. The more I played the less I liked it. I just cant get excited for it like I thought I would.

I started out in the first beta thinking this game is OK but not great. Before beta four was over I had preordered. Game really grew on me. Rifts are a great idea. Souls are a great addition to the standard skill trees. Graphics look beautiful on my rig with everything turned up and no lag. Looking forward to the remaining betas and headstart.
I started in Beta 3, leveled a couple of characters to 10 in the first day and walked away from it. It just wasn't very appealing to me. I can almost say I hated it.
I got into beta 4 and hopped on just out of bordom and to try the warfronts. I ended up playing the whole weekend.
It's not the second coming of Jesus or anything but the game definatly gets better the longer you play it. I'll be buying it.

Bummer though, "Walk on Water" would be a good racial ability.

Sorry, not really clear what I meant. Thank you Seffren for pointing that out.

I've played in Beta 3 and Beta 4 and while the game is not bad and I can definitely see how it would appeal to some people, calling it amazing is bit much, don't you think?

Yeah this kind of EQ clone grows on you till you realise just that... it is an absolute clone in terms of gameplay of EQ, EQ2, WOW, and all the rest of that shite. Then you hopefully think - ok it might be nicer graphics but can I really do the same old shite again?

The game will offer world raid bosses, a pvp ranking system with unlockable pvp souls, enterable rifts, daily quests, endgame advancement trough achievements, collections and crafting through daily quests and recipes off rep vendors. I could keep on going guys. As for rifts growing on me, I think I instantly enjoyed them it was the other stuff like the soul system, character design, quests, crafting and collections that grew on mE.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I think we all know promised features aren't actual features. We've all been around the block enough times to know better.
We know Trion has done a good job to this point, but that is no reason to assume the rest is there.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
Alpha testers are still under the NDA so anything he might have heard or read is most likely just more hype being presented as fact.

Rift grows on me?
Nooo, that's my rear end, leave it alone you perv!

I don't think it feels new to anyone it's just a lot of damn FUN....

Fresh would be a good word.
Did the opposite to me. The more I played the less I liked it. I just cant get excited for it like I thought I would.
Thats cool there's a lot of really good games comeing out in 2011 so you have options...

Yes, thank god for that
I started out in the first beta thinking this game is OK but not great.
Warfronts é, I thought they were fun to.
I'm ancious to see how world pvp turns out.
