Rifts are gimmicks but full of fun... Have you experienced a Raid Rift Event? Mucho fun for a gimmick.. I find the random roaming invasions that spawn from Rifts a bit more enjoyable then static mobs...
I did one, it was on a Saturday of beta 3 I think? and it was the same old crap, tank and spank... I don't know that I'd call it exciting. It was at first, but the excitement wore off pretty fast for me. I am just ready for something a little different.

Lets see if you'll say the same thing in 3 months after being forced to fight the same very limited invading crap over & over.
Oh, & they aren't really random & certainly aren't roaming either, but just going straight to their goal. So yeah... failed on both accounts, try again.
Rifts ARE a real gimmick boltered up to insame hype lvl through marketing to the gullible.

Some are tank and spank but not all, there was a nice melange of different style Rifts in beta four. But i would agree if you don't like the traditional style mmorpg's you wont like Rift. Tera looks beautiful and the combat looks fun i bet it's going to be a nice change of pace...

Target locking and tab targeting are the same, but TERA is actually aiming, with certain skills using target lock.... watch some of the live streams (I am right now) and the combat isn't even close to the same as Rift...
It's still a gimmick at the end of the day... Can you use a PS2 controller?
I just dont understand why people are talking like Rift is such a great game when the Rift forum is on fire right now being called nonthing but another WoW / Warhammer clone. People are playing Rift so what they are saying about the game should be listened to. You all sound like idiots calling a game a grinder when you have not even played the game and are seeing post from people that are playing the game saying that the game is not a grind and they are having a blast playing Tera. Its just hating plain and simple. Instead of talking to us about Rift go to your forum and debate to the people there because we know that Rift sucks and it will be dead a month afther release.
To all thats playing Tera plz keep us updated on your progress and thoughts.
Forums seem fine to me nice try..... Have a look for yourself....
I am talking about the Rift forum on this site. Now you go have a look for your self.
Look at any of the forums on this site lol. Includeing this one there all full of haters...
But like I said earlier, here people are talking trash about a game that they have not even played which is makes them look stupid but in Rift case people are playing the game including my self who has been a VIP Day 1 Beta Tester so we are not just blowing smoke but actually talking about our thoughts from our actual game play. You get what I am saying now?

No idea, but at least it's a step up from tab targetting that we have seen as you have to actually dodge to .. dodge.. you have to move around, try to be strategic (or so it seems lol). Mobs act differently to your movements, etc. so that is where it gets to be a bit more fun than what we have seen from current games.
Speaking of gimmick.. thats what Rifts are lol.

What he mean is hard to explain, yesterday i uploaded a video for a friend to try to explain this same thing despite the bad quality of it, in the video you can see how im looking for the back of the mob for dodge their frontal attacks and how i try to enter and exit his melee range for evade their blows and give time to the special skills cooldown, this is just a trash mob.
In Rift ( which i raised some clases to lv 20+ ) the combat is more traditional, you just approach to the mob and press 1,2,3 till the mob is dead, like you do in the rest of MMO's in the market, it is just less action oriented, which is not good or bad... just different.
It's really a shame that this thread has turned into a neverending flame war between Rift fanboy's and a few people actually coming here with an open mind looking for the information stated in the thread topic.....
With that being said, I've advanced to level 25 in Tera's beta and have not had a dull moment yet. The environments and monsters only get bigger and better as you progress through the game. I've now been introduced to world bosses, group dynamics, full party instances and a bit of the "enchantment" and "upgrading systems." Tera is a lot more than it looks on the surface, especially with the recent information released about Lordship and Kingship politics. The crafting system is complex and thorough and it is something I am really looking forward to come full release. World bosses are a blast and fighting as a group is a truely fun experience; making sure each person is doing their job, in the right place at the right time. Bosses often jump at you, spin or dive and being able to react quickly with a backward leap or a successful blink will choose if you live or die at any given moment.
Weapon and armor upgrades are easy enough, all it takes is a supplemental item bought from the general NPC and a weapon or armor of equal or higher level to destroy in each attempt at an upgrade. The upgrade animation is a pleasant surprise with indicators letting you know your chance of success.
I recieved my beautifully armored horse mount at 22, and love that the mount is an insta-cast when out of battle. Hoping to see different mounts in the future.
I'm sorry if my updates are more like short blurbs, but I find it hard to pull myself away from the game. I honestly haven't been truely excited and immersed in a game like this for a few years. And it feels great.
Again, IMHO I just don't see anyone playing a game like Rift over this. I am not hating on Rift, lets get that clear. I played the Rift beta and while the game is solid and has some quirks, it simply cannot compete. Show me a person that has played this beta, and said outright that they would rather play a different MMO. ANY MMO. If you can show me that man, consider me proven wrong.

That being said, This " As you get around 13+ the quest mobs really make you work to drop those precious quest items. This really pleased me because I am so used to just getting 1 item from every quest mob no matter what. Nope, not in TERA. You need to work for those quests, sometimes grinding out 40+ mobs on a 15 item quest. They make it so you don't even realize you're grinding while you are! "... Doesn't sound like a good thing. Sounds like grind and reliance on RNG for drops.
A quest giver that requires 16 newt eyeballs should require killing 8 newts. Unless...
The rationale is that the prodigious use of Fireball spells destroys the eyes, if so, then the option should be available to trap them or perhaps use non fireball spells to kill the dreaded newts. Or if its a harvesting thing, it should be a skill that gets better as one is required to harvest newt bits making newt eye getting easier over time.
Though I assume the droprate of certain quest items varies from quest to quest, that is a rather bad example of a "grindy quest". Even WoW (there I said it) had quests that had me kill more than a hundred mobs, for ex. the Gorilla drop one in Stranglethorn.
Safe to say it's fine if that is too much for you, but I doubt many people will mind it. Then again I've played MMOs for a very long time and Aion's grind didn't feel hard at all to me so maybe I'm just used to different things...

I'll agree with the 16 newt eyes should require killing 8 newts but the other bit i think is a bit to extreme at the moment. I doubt many people would want to fanny around with that.
However there are a few games where it is enjoyable to kill a lot of mobs. RF Online was like this for me, when it first launched (In Europe) it was basically kill 30 of these or that and of course leveling up the different skills (Not like now where you level super fast). But i never cared about that and just enjoyed killing. I hope Tera is like this but i'll have to see when i play it myself.

this works
These live streams look great.
Love the way the combat looks against multiple mobs. Using movement to round them up. Kiting them to avoid the hits. And that was a melee class.
The world itself also looks a fun place, but those weapons are HUGE.
Tera looks ridiculously good. Lolis with 4 meter long giant axes, avoiding/dodging the enemies and supreme gfx?
Sign me up lmao.
