Any games worth playing?

xBrandoxBrando Member Posts: 91

Basically, I've tried a lot of MMO's both F2P and P2P. I'm currently subbed to WoW, but after many years of off and on WoW action it really gets dull. At this point I'm looking for something to hold me over until SWToR / GW2. No MMOs have really stood out to me in the last couple years, they seem to be all the same, but just with a diffrent finish. Is there anything out there that may have some originality that will hold me over for a half year or so? Any reccomendations welcome, both F2P and P2P.

I need atleast one game to feed my MMO appetite on late nights after a long day :P

Not really:/ Since wow came out, basicly all games have tried to compete and fail. This year in other hand have alot to give as it seems now:) Looking forward to all of them.

But if you want something to keep you occepied, well... try some more:D finally you will find the one that will keep your attention for awhile. Currently I'm in Aion and trying to withstand the grind:) Good thing I like epic anime moves. Allmost everything you do is epic awesomeness it seems, all from a simple hit to a hard hitting combo to a nice relaxing heal... Anyhow, try Everquest 2, it is nowadays released as f2p with option to go p2p for the newest exp and full availability of it all. Same with Lord of the ring online. Or you could test the first try what Tera is trying, The cronicle of the spellborn, fpsish mmoish rpgish type of game... simply put, where you slash there you hit... kinda... also gone f2p:)

if you find anything interesting, post:)

    This is my favorite game:

    www.playdarkfallonline.com

This one has a 14-day free trial. Main problem with the game is that because you gain skills in what you use, the more repetitive you are in doing things, the faster you skill-up but they are working on meditation so that you can do what you want to do while you play easier. The PVP is actually not that often in the game as people would expect. Dying is pretty rare too. My GF dies like once a month sometimes, but probably more like once a week? She doesn't even like PVP and its her favorite game as well (by faaar) so dont let the FFA PVP full-loot thing scare you off but it can be a hard adjustment when coming from EQ-clones that you spoke of.

I am sure that I will play GW2 on the side for immediate PVP since I still play the original about 10-20min a day since it came out. Guildwars is great for the very casual play and I play for PVP mostly and it covers that as well. To be honest, I tend to play Guildwars while crafting/harvesting in Darkfall. Sometimes I will play EVE or Global Agenda or Quake on a 2nd monitor as well. Darkfall and Guildwars are good games to play together though because they are polar opposites in many ways. In Darkfall it can hurt to die or make you really upset so it can be a good 10 minute break to log into GW real quick for instant pwnage (game is a million times easier than Darkfall it seems like and can make you feel better after getting pounded in a real PVP game).

There is also EVE, MO, FE, . .. and thats about it besides of dozens of dumbed-down eq-clones (wow-clones). Theres a few more, I just named some from the top of my head.

From what I understand Ryzom is a decent change of pace.

Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security.  I don't Forum PVP.  If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident.  When I don't understand, I ask.  Such is not intended as criticism.

I am so on the fence about Darkfall, mainly because the graphics and animatioms make it look like Quake Arena.

If death isn't so common, what is PvP? Just beat each other up all day or what? Also, what are the death penalties?

I may give the 14 day trial a go. I tried Mortal Online and Perpettuum, i used to think i was all in favor of sandbox/ruthless games until i tried these two. Darkfall seems to cater well to players who like a bit of both. From what i've seen of the UI and such, it isn't as ruthless as say Mortal Online.

  • I've tried Darkfall but ultimately the sluggishness and poor UI etc. kinda got to me. Damage numbers in Times New Roman and it felt very empty. I know it's a big turn around when you come from other games but I've played lots of MMO and this one just didn't manage to hold my interest for too long. You might like it though, who knows. Since there is a trial you lose nothing but a bit of time anyway.

I was going to play some Fallen Earth, the game improved a lot, but they're having some paypal issues for people without a CC so~

Sit tight for Rift, beta was really fun overall, it's gonna be a nice change of pace, new world, new events, polished, smooth, very nice graphically and while it is very similar to WoW, in Rift's case, that's a good thing. I think it'll definitely hold your interest until GW2, at least it will for me!

The combat is very similar to quake but actually a hell of a lot funner imo because there are so many more options that race through your head. Everyone fights differently. In quake people tend to fight more of the same way, but people learn to fight in this game over long periods of time and tend to favor what has worked best for them. I usually prefer kiting melee (polearm, but switch to sword often) and kiting archery but my play-style is not working for me as well as it used to so I am having to change it around a little but compared to the average player, it works great and there is practically no grind for it (but I have to wear heavy armor which is more expensive than being a mage). I use cover and my surroundings much more than the average player since I have magic blocked to tend to bring people to good battlegrounds before I make my final stand. Highest DPS output is actually archery but magic makes things very tactical. Although I have magic blocked, I do have a blind spell and a couple spells for launching me forward or healing, but do not use magic for the most part besides a debuff that makes my polearm and arrows do more damage (but its hard to land). I also like to throw spells on my enemy occasionally that drain their stamina or increase their chance of spell failure. There are so many tactics in this game which make the PVP involve more player-skill than I have ever experienced.

The physics engine is a blast though! Funner than any FPS game that I have ever played. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8YjJNKbt9o

One of the things that many people frown upon but anything that you can see, you can get on or use to your advantage during combat.

Aimbot is almost worthless because if someone were to use an aimbot, they would be an easy target since they are keeping their cursor on you (therefore not dodging), and it will basically mess them up and probably kill them. Macros on a gaming keyboard can help player-skill a lot and whatever your play-style is so the person who likes to customize everything will have a much more enjoyable experience. They are totally revamping the UI soon though (which is actually scary to me since I am so used to the current one which is almost identical to games like Oblivion).

PVP is not common because of the full-loot (you drop everything that you are carrying if you die, but dying is actually pretty rare after you have played for a bit . ... my GF for example dies very rarely compared to me since she doesn't like PVP) and the world being so large (takes like 6 hours to run from one corner of the main continent to the other) and it is easy to avoid PVP if you want to once you have started playing for a bit. Clans basically can create and maintain safe zones from clever use of ventrillo (using phantoms in vent) and by watching system log or paying attention to lag spikes (if you lag, someone is coming so you have time to just go bank your collected stuff and by the time you return they will probably be gone).

I did not really enjoy those games you tried at all and actually I almost quit Darkfall at first because I thought that I would have to grind. Turned out that I was able to create a decent character by just doing whatever I want because it all raises stats since I just kept my sub alive and put in 10-20 hours a week but it does take months to learn how to PVP (mostly because it isnt often unless you make it often).

They are about to make some pretty major changes to the game . ... next expansion includes new graphics, animations, directx11 support, environmental sounds (mostly excited for this! will totally enchance immersion), prestige classes, revamping meditation (offline skilling), etc.

No other game that I can think of will stir emotions in you from what happens to your character like this game will. It is the only game that friends will call me about while at work and stuff to tell me about some epic thing that happened with a very excited tone (unpredictable gaming sessions, almost always, and sometimes in your favor). Failure and accomplishment is felt much more in this game compared to others and your story ends up being your own. Basically you are thrown into a world where law comes from total chaos as you live, find food and a place to live, and eventually form a strong bond with a clan or brotherhood. There is no random grouping for the most part so it is very socially different than other games and there is only one character per accound and no instances so everyone gets to know eachother. This means that if someone does you wrong, you can find a way to get payback someday.

People say that you have to grind, but I am not willing to grind, and instead get my skills up as I explore (usually for crafting mats for better gear) and go through dungeons and stuff. I never know what to expect when I log in though, and that is what has kept me going more than anything. I have never macroed since I rerolled this character and think that I enjoy the game much more than people who do.

Sorry I am a fast typer . .. and excited to get off work and play! Going to go to a new dungeon for some enchanting mats I need to make my girlfriend a pink sithra (she is obsessed about looking good lol its cute). I've played for almost 2 years, haven't experienced most of the new content and have only explored about 70% of the map. Bah . ... I want to find a treasure map grr haven't found one yet, but thats one of the new things.

Wow thanks for that great write up Sid. I'm downloading as we speak. It does sound like a good game, and even if i don't stick around, it sounds like you're really enjoying it any way! :)

One more thing, is there a big difference between the EU and US client/servers? I'm from the EU and thus downloading the EU client, but im wondering whether ill have a better experience on the US servers or not?

    Cheers!
