I am surprised at ppl actually saying that the animations are bad, I think they are actually one of the best I have seen I absolutely love them.
Only thing I am slightly disappointed about is the targetting,
a) I dont like you cant target the mob when he is there and is talking or doing some animation, being able to pre-target is a great feature.
b) targetting can be unresponsive or "seem" unresponsive from my tests, between you clicking and the aura appearing underneath it takes about 1 second, not having the instant feedback sometimes seems like I have not actually targetted and end up spamming clicks.
Other than that seems solid, rifts are good events, having fun with the old quests so far, graphics look really great, pre-order is done.
The Combat Gameplay in Rift is major disappointment. Its not fun.
Its simply not fun. What a shame.

See what I did there.

I see what was done there, and i find the combat in Rift to be rather fun and...
OMG IT'S DARKPONY!!
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Gave the game another chance today... but cant stand it. Had to uninstall. The Rifts idea are cool, but ultimatelly the main thing about the game, its core fundaments and design are offensive to my intelect. Its an obvious attempt to fool people into buying what is, no matter how I look at it, a bad product.
Its just bland, boring, old, cookie cutter, empty, repetitive, uninteractive, unresponsive, uninteresting combat...
Only two posters so far said they found it awesome and exciting, I respect their opinion, and like two people were like "its like everythign else" to excuse it, but 90% of the people who posted here so far had expressed their disappointments.
What matters is wether the majority of people find it fun or not.
To me and the majority, its simply not fun, not entertaining, not worth a purchase, not worth a subscription, false advertisement, hyped empty product.
As consumers those people witnessed this phenomn multiple times before with other games and learned how to evaluate a product for what it is.
Seriously, what did the developers from Rift expected? Did they thought we would swallow that poor/unfun combat?
At first it looked like this game would be halfway decent, but no. Now we all know it for what it is.

Are you talking about the majority in this thread, or the other, larger majority who have pre-ordered the game, liked it on Facebook, etc.?
As far as combat goes, it's exactly what the developers said it was. Classic mmorpg combat. Not sure why anyone would think it would be anything other than what it turned out to be.
*edit* I work with more people who have pre-ordered the game than have posted in this thread.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I do hope that all these complaints have been reported? It seems rather stupid to try a game, dislike something and then leave the game without giving proper feedback. You are the customer. Tell them what you want... It may be an issue others wish to see changed.
Personally i use the feedback option whenever I can.. Yesterday i gave them credit for their amazing work with small details and use of lore. I also told them how the music wasn't the best and the lack of some animations.

LOL LOL excuse me while I LOL!!!!!
Combat isn't fun huh??? Than maybe you should check out other genre's buddy. I am seriously beginning to think that some of these kids came to MMO's from other games.. Maybe FPS, maybe action adventure games. I don't know what it is , but MMO's have been like this since DAY ONE.
Yeah since day 1 combat been like this...Does this mean we have to eat it on face for ever? Have u read combat previews for GW 2? Watched combat videos of GW2? So dont tell ppl that just cause they eat shit over 10 years they ll have to keep eating shit for rest of their lifes...

I respect your opinion and it's always sad to see a gamer unsatisfied with a game. However, you have no evidence to support you claim regarding the majority's expereince of this game other than this thread which is hardly valid. False advertisment? Please provide valid evidence to this claim..

At what point did Trion put a gun to your head and force you to play their game? If you don't like it, don't play it. Wait for GW2*. It's as simple as that. The nerdrage over stuff like this is getting kind of old though.

I don't think you have an accurate assessment of the pulse of Rift players.
Yes, there are people who hate this game, don't find it fun, wouldn't touch it with a 10' poll. But there are many people who do find it fun, aren't looking for the second coming when it comes to combat in an mmorpg. To that end I will assume your 90% is just for the sake of effect.
i do know that there were a lot of people in game last night who were saying they were ready to pay, ready to sub, start the launch "now".
Many more agreeing that they were having a blast and one of the best times in a long time in an mmorpg.
So does my 90% trump your 90%?
Probably not.
I think what's happening here is that people are just more open to seeing the comments of people who share their own viewpoints.
I actually opened up WoW last night I don't see how WoW combat is any more superior than rift combat at the early levels.
I had my dark elf and my two skills in the starter area and I hit a young tiger thing and all of a sudden another skill "lit up" and I was able to use it and to swing around and hit the tiger.
I didnt' get goose bumps.

Always there are complaints unless its something new or breaking the mold, but at the end of the day you continue to use old systems that are functional and fine. Always room for improvement, but more of the same is not a bad thing.
You do realize that the reason this thread is so negative is that everyone that likes rift is playing it because we only have until Friday before the event ends. Luckily I can post on my phone while playing rift. Once the beta event ends this place will be mostly positive and not filled with haters and trolls with no one but a skeleton crew to fight them off.

There's also Alt+Tab you know. Or that windows button (if it's allowed to work ingame).

Haven't played rift have you? You can't afk in rift and not die lol. Sooner or later some rift or invasion will gank the shit out of you if you stand in one place too long. And I could minimize easily by pressing my windows key if I wanted. Maybe, just maybe people are having so much fun they don't want to read the lies on this forum.

Bro! You wouldn't believe how I'm playing this game right now! A 2.4 gig single core athalon, 256mb Agp Nvidia 6800gt with 2gigs of ram running in windows XP. With the lowest setting I'm playing at around 15-20fps LOL!!!!! For me to suffer through this just to play a beta event that game has to be good.

I had to go AFK many times in Rift. Usually when waiting about an hour helpless for invasions to despawn from hubs.

You guys will say anything... I give man keep waiting for that innovative game that will never come. I'll see you guys in the "this game fails" threads of both TOR & GW2 in a few months because it's obvious that all we have on this forum are bitter overly critical ex-mmo gamers that won't ever enjoy a mmo again.
Hate to agree with OP since I already pre-ordered, but RIFT does feel very "flat" to me. I bought DCUO to wait out RIFT release (which is in turn a stop-gap for SWTOR) and after a couple beta's now it's already feeling tired to me. Thing's I've noticed about DCUO by contrast are that the game handles questing in a way that provides nice short story lines, very fluid interface and engaging combat (combo's, interactions), etc...
Frankly I was expecting DCUO to be a one-monther, but i'm still having a riot with this game. Jumped in the beta last night with a friend who pre-ordered RIFT and we both just logged after an hour to hit up some more DCUO.
I'll be giving RIFT a good shake here when it's live, but so far it's approach of using the wow-playstyle/interface precident is working against me, making what should be a very engaging game feel quite "old" out of the gates. The combat seems to be a button mash and coming off of DCUO where combat feels quite epic at times that's a real downer.
The DC mmo is actually a great game and offers a completely different experience. Obviously Rift is going to feel slow and less streamlined than a mmorpg designed with consoles in mind. In actually pretty excited that SOE finally made a good game and look forward to a trial. With that said I wouldn't compare a game like rift too it. We play in a genre with many different sub genres from classic themepark to sandbox and various themes. Hell they even have sports, racing and rts mmos out now. I love the variety and refuse to put different sub-genres against eachother in comparison. If I did I would only talk about eve and how it's the greatest piece of video game software ever created.

Innovation will indeed come or the genre will simply die. We are in a period of stagnation at the moment. Death soon follows. Welcome to the entertainment industry. There's only a finite amount of time that you can ride one wave.
I think Rift is an interesting case though. So many have claimed that WoW remains undented after all of these years because the studios after a piece of the pie are making poor WoW-style/WoWish/WoW like games. The argument has always been: "why would they leave WoW for a lesser version of what they already have?"
Now we finally have a very good WoW-style/WoWish/WoW like game that has generated considerable interest. It should be fascinating to see how things look 6 months after launch. Personally, I think it will do average-better than average relative to the western market. Definitely not taking the crown, though.
We are however, going to need some fresh games thrown into the mix sooner than later. It's unrealistic to expect the genre to remain healthy and continue to grow without seeing any studios introducing new ideas/features/gameplay etc. One of the reasons I believe we keep seeing such similar games is not only because of the quest to dent WoW, but also due to how long these games take to develop. Work on many of these games most likely started three to five years ago, maybe more.
Hopefully we'll get some fresh games in the next few years. I'm crossing my fingers for CCP's World of Darkness, but it seems so far away.
I love this genre with a passion, and I feel that it would be beyond tragic to see it fizzle out because of lack of originality, and a playerbase that merely settles for what is doled out.
