I have gotten the original (chosen) three from questing through the tutorial etc and in Meridian got another quest for a specific soul (Reaver, as I'm playing a warrior). How do I obtain other souls that I'd want access to instead of specific ones? I ask because the original soul I chose just isn't what I'd hoped for so I have two that I'm building on and the third is just dead weight.

At level 15, you'll find quests in Meridian for the other souls - you say you've picked up the quest for Reaver already. Next;
Help close a rift. Any rift will do. This will reward you with a yellow shard.
Use the item in your inventory you got from the quest - or click the icon next to the quest log. This will create a tear to the plane of death and bring through the tortured soul of the quest you're on (in this case, Reaver). Or in vanilla terms - summon a mob.
Kill the mob.
Target the remains of the mob and use the quest item to capture its soul.
Return to the quest giver. Voila, new soul.
Lather, rinse, repeat for all the other souls you're missing. Enjoy! Note you can only have one "soul quest" active at once so expect a lot of running back and forth between Meridian and the nearest rift event.

Nice, thanks for the play by play. I have 3 level 8s and 1 level 14, was wondering when I got more "soul power". Someone was asking me to explain how it worked I told them:
"They are like Pokemon. You can have any 3 in play at once. Gotta catch em all."
Thanks all, tried my own research last night and didn't find much, even a functional calculator (the one posted in the sticky is down).
This is the best one I have found.

It looks the part, has as much as is out there to be had, and being Zam it will probably be updated if any new information presents itself. Hope it helps.
PvP one worths 2500 favor from the PvP vendors in the respective citadels.
I like the whole pvp soul mechanic. its easy to get but once you hit max level and prestige ranks kick in it will require an investment to gain both skill points to spend in the tree and hit the levels to beable to wear the armor.
I think its kinda cool, seems like it will take real effort to obtain the perfectly specced and suited pvp character.
