Definitely not a WoW clone.

TurdinatorTurdinator Member Posts: 210

I've heard that forever. Finally decided to play Beta, and I don't see the "IT'S A WOW CLONE!" thing that a few people have been mentioning on the forums.

A few things I've noticed so far are:

1. Graphics are very nice.

2. So many choices in the game for your class (it is unreal).

3. The world events are pretty sweet.

4. I'm having a good time playing it.

More like: even Rift is more of a WoW clone now than WoW :)

Well, depends on what WoW era we're referring to.

Its more of a WAR clone then anything. If you had to give it a tag.

Long enough to know it has none of the qualities I mentioned Rift having.

Where were you wanting to go with this?

I could make a list of thousands of things that are exactly like WoW.

    UI

    Questing

    Tradeskills

    Instanced dungeons

    Minimap

    Global cool down combat

Ok, I'll just stop now before your whole argument goes up in flames.

And yet none of those were a WoW idea, or was implimented origionally in WoW.  What makes these aspects of an MMO make any MMO That has them automatically a "WoW clone?"

I feel like you are giving too much credit to WoW.

Yes over half the MMO's out there are similar. Yet you silly WoW fanboys who can't look out your box. Don't see how everything you listed is the same or more like other MMO's out there. WoW isn't the only damn game out  there.

    -UI

Is almost the same as WAR. Being it has the same custom layout. Its been improved a little. So I don't mind what works and making it better. Thats all WoW had done from the start and stlil does.  Half the new stuff WoW adds come from other MMO's as well. They all steal from each other.

    -Questing

Really? Every damn MMO has quest now days... wth is your point here?

    -Tradeskills

Yep its basic, just like half the stupid games out there.

    -Minimap

If they didn't have one... that just be stupid. No idea why this is linked to WoW at all.

    -Global cool down combat

Again, its the basics. Can you all stop being tools about WoW all rdy.

WoW is a great game. Yet its just a clone of everything that works and improved. Every stupid game in this genre is a clone of each other to some point. Everyone takes what works and trys to make it better. Some add extra crazy stuff here and there that fails or passes. Still for the most part this genre is always going to be  clone of one and another to some decree

I love how everything is a clone of WoW when WoW is the biggest clone ninja of them all.

    1.  The graphics are dated for a game coming out two years ago, let alone not even released yet.

    2.  Your supposed class choices are really just a gimmick. You don't get enough points to get much meaningful content from your secnd and third classes.  Yes, you can pick up a rez or a pet or something like that, but its a really limited mechanic.

    3.  I can't really argue with that.

    4.  Rift is a decent game.  I actually enjoy the lower level content.

Rift isn't really a WoW clone. Its just a generic MMO.  People say its a WoW clone because that's all they've ever really played.  Rift certainly ha sthe potential to be a better game than WoW, so don't get me wrong.  I don't think it will get a comparable player base though.  Honestly, WoW is a fluke.  Its success has more to do with quality of marketing than quality of content.  And WoW has had some of the best marketing of any game ever.

Just curious man, what level did you get to that you say you dont get enough points to get much meaningful content from your second and third classes?

66 points for 3 tech tree/souls. You gota limit it at some point. I think thats a good chunk to do a lot with all 3 souls imo. Not sure how thats a gimmick. I't would be stupid if you could max all 3.

The soul system is a basic 3 tech tree system. You just get to pick what 3 trees yourself and not get stuck with a 3 fixed set is all. Its not a new extrem kick ass system, like some people seem to think. Though its still nice to have more flexibility and variety then the norm fixed 3 set.

Yes Turdinator you are right it is not a WOW clone it is an EQ clone and so it WOW and how anyone can play these game after 10 years of the same old thing makes me really wonder about the mental health of the players.

Feel free to enjoy playing the same old game with a different skin though. Each to their own!

Yes, but lets not forget to point out some important information about the soul trees that your leaving out here ok.

You get 66 points at level 50, it only take 31 points in a single tree to get all the way to the top of the branches. So you can technically reach the top of the branches in two of your 3 trees and still have 5 left over for your third one. The only time you need more than 31 is if you want to flesh the tree all the way out and pick up the roots from 31 up to 51. But that is caled specializing. You sacrifice the other 2 trees in order to become specialized in a single one. Yes you get some nice abilities 32 and up in the roots, but they are there specifically for those who want to specialize in a single soul tree.

This is why I questioned your comment earlier, because you have more than enough points to do more than just a single tree if your not focusing on specializing in a single one just for those last 4 root abilities. (And yes, those last 4 do take 20 points to get - so specializing does have its cost)

Oh and lets also point out a clarification to your statement above as well ok. You make it sound like the soul system is JUST a 3 tech tree system, which it is not. Sure each of your FOUR builds have 3 trees in them, but you get 4 builds which you can swap between on the fly. And to change them around, all you have to do is wipe the points you put into them (respec at your trainer) and you can mix and match between the 9 souls again in that build (for a very minor cost). So dont go off giving the impression that a player is JUST going to be in a 3 tech tree setup for thier character and thats it. They are in a 4 build setup for thier character, each build just happens to have 3 tech trees in them.

You may not have gotten to use this system yet to see its advantage, but it does have one no other MMO has given you yet. I, and many I play with, swap our builds all the time depending on the mobs we are fighting. We have our team builds, our raid builds, our solo builds, and our PvP builds. Queue up for a warfront while your out hunting - it pops and you enter - hit the PvP build and instantly your up and rdy for some fun. The warfront ends, you exit - hit your solo build and your back in the other instantly. A rift pops up near by, you run over and join the public group - hit the team build and your instantly ready to help out. The rift ends, just click away and your back to solo build to go back to that quest again. Its like being 4 seperate characters all at once,

Wow, you must be very bright if after 1000 posts you finally realise people are here to post their opinions. image

@OP, I agree with you. The game is very well done, apart from the most important part which is the combat; it lacks impact and this makes it boring to play. And as combat is what you are doing 90% of the time this ruins everything. They should hire Bluehole studios, Arenanet or Ncsoft to redo how the fighting feels if they want their game to succeed. Melee fighting just feels very weak and boring.

    Kaocan Sir

I think your mixing me up with someone else. My comment was in defense of the system to a point. I was saying how its NOT a gimmick and that you can do a lot with it. I did still point out its nothing really new and for some reason people are freaking out over it like its too crazy out of the box. When its really just the norm with more options. I like my options :).
