....to actually feel excited about leveling up in a game for the first time in many, many years?

I have been playing online games for about ten years now, and one of my main issues and reasons  why i never pass the lv 25 milestone in the 90% of the mmo´s i try, is that i somehow feel i am doing things for absolutely no reason at all.

"Wohoo...i leveled up...i have +2hp and i can equip this staff that makes my spells do 10 more damage points just like pretty much every single InsertMyClassHere in this game......fun... ¿i think?"

But in Rift, the awesome soul system makes me constantly be excited about getting that one new spell,  of that one soul tree, that will allow me to perform that one spell combination i thought about when choosing my souls, that in turn will allow me to try and tackle that one challenge i have unsuccessfully attempted to conquer  before.

Not only that, but if  my original strategy ends up not being as good as i thought,   i think of something more fun to do or simply, i get bored of doing what i do,  i can simply switch and enjoy a whole "new character" and strategy without losing my progress.

Furthermore i have the always pleasant feeling, that i am building up my very own character and that next to noone around me will make the same choices or have exactly the same spell combos.

Now, i am not a fool,  i know that eventually, (and specially in the end game),  there will be certain "cookie cutter"  builds that will perform a bit better than the rest for certain roles, and i assume if one wants to  compete at hardcore levels,  may be forced to adopt a similar build to maximize his chosen role, but for the general gamer, and if the devs are a bit smart, there will be a chance to successfully help your group and progress thru the end game while keeping your own identity and chosen path, giving a distinct flavor and strategy to every raid.

And if they keep adding new souls/trees  in the future, this can get even better.

I do admin I'm enjoying leveling up. I'm not even noticing it as I'm doing it, I'm just having fun playing which says a lot. I hope this lasts as I get bored of MMO within a 3 month period usually.

Nothing wrong with being a little excited about Rift man. I have a similar level of enjoyment happening. Lots of things fixed from beta 5 to beta 6 that were irking me too.

The soul system and leveling are definitely a breath of fresh air compared to other MMO's i've played lately. The quick switch between souls and the low costs of re-speccing are also great. I hope they keep it that way. WoWs system is pretty average in comparison.

Of course people will inevitably arrive here and make fun of you or call you names for your enthusiasm. Neither of us will notice because we'll be in game I guess ;-)

nope.  im digging it.  after reading so many hateful posts about this game i went in with the idea that it was going to be a mediocre game.  I must say I feel that this game is very well polished and could potentially do really well.  for a beta game its really fun.

Im still trying to figure out why all the whiners are complaining about it..its really quite good.

its so very similar to wow a lot of people will be able to pick it up with a very small learning curve.  that is a good thing for attracting the masses and keeping them.  its bad for MMO-hardcores that float around this forum spewing poo.

One thing i want them to fix is the when you character makes a damn jumping animation if you press spacebar underwater. Smallest thing in the world but my god it annoys me :( Reported it in every single event. (anyone notice the males pony tail hair style is rock solid where as the females actually has a bit of scripted physics?)

Right now i'm taking a break from Rift, don't want to ruin the experience completely for when the real deal launches. But it is fun when you get into it.

Yeh couldn't agree more. I'd love to see an animation where your characters can actually climb back onto something like a jetty from the water, as opposed to jumping up and down in the water like a lunatic. Seems to be a problem with a lot of MMOs though.
