An objective review of ER from a sandbox fan

Inat_miveaInat_mivea Star Wars Galaxies CorrespondentMember Posts: 249

so i am neither a fanboi nor a hater; just an MMO player whos been around the block a few times. My favorite mmo was pre-nge SWG; second favorite is Eve. I hate questing and I hate being locked into a certain play-style / combat role. For the longest time in SWG I was a Pistoleer/Master Architect and I had a blast.

Anyway, I've played just about every MMO that's been released since 2003 and none of them have stuck for all the same reason - there was but one way to play and the quests lead you the entire way.

So that tells you what kind of player I am and what type of game I am looking for.

---------------------

Pros

  • You can use any weapon; you're just going to be better at using the ones you invest your BPs (battle points) into.

  • I can put my battle / skill points anywhere - If i want to be a crafter with a little bit of combat, i can do it.

  • You can attack ANYTHING and ANYONE - but there are repercussions. I REALLY like that you have to consciously hold down the control key in order to attack an NPC or Player that is not an enemy. This will prevent people from whining later when the repercussions don't go their way.

  • Aiming for combat - I get so tired of Tabbing targets and just mashing keys - you actually have to do something in this game ot be effective in combat.

  • PvE isnot the only  choice - I dont like to PvE; I only want to PvE in order to get something (faction, credits, gear).

  • PvP is NOT a choice

  • Great tech/GM support

Cons

  • Limited customizations in character creation

  • Can't do keymap from options screen (i HIGHLY suggest a game pad for this - i am using the nostromo n52)

  • Laggy- reminds me of being in corellia in early days of SWG; or restuss in later days of SWG

  • Loading Screen takes FOR-EV-ER

  • Controls are a little wonky but use traditional WASD movements. I get a little cornfused  with my Alt and Tab key but that is a leftover from SWG where Alt does what tab does here...

** Sorry i have not got into crafting yet so cannot comment on that aspect of the game **

Basically, the cons aren't REAL cons - these are growing pains. I expect lag in a newbie area of a game released less than 24 hours ago. I expect that my old-man mind and fingers are going to need some time to get used to new controls. What I DO think they need to do is work on the character creation - players like to highly customize their toons; it helps us connect to the world.

As for support, I gotta say, MS is doing great! THey resolved their initial issues and have superb in game support. I mentioned something in chat about not being able to attack an NPC and a GM showed up a few mintues later to tell me what I was doing wrong (not holding down CTRL on a "white" con NPC)

Overall, this game is NOT going to be for everyone - it is not going to be for the SWG players who hated the TEF system and it isnt going to be for the Eve players who raged over their new mining Hulk being destroyed. Like the old SWG and Eve, ER isnt a magical world where your equipment doenst decay without insurance and other players are prevented from attacking you my unknown forces. This is "real world" where your choices actually matter! As long as those that enjoy these "riskier" games are in for the long haul and are understanding of MMO release woes, this game will thrive.

See ya in game

They paid for the game. They have the right to bitch up to the last day of their subs.

Actually they don't have the right to bitch constantly in the ingame chat until the last day of their sub, that's what the forums are for or their wives or the pet cat or their grief councilor. If their complaining in game negatively impacts on my experience then they have the right to be censored, in game chat serves many purposes and being a mouth piece for some butt hurt QQer isn't one of them ... FACT!

Couldn't you then just simply use the ignore feature?  Just saying.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

ya know, there was a time in my SWG time that I thought it was the right of a paying player to b1tch and moan about the game but then I realized they were negatively influencing people from buying or rejoining the game which in turn made my experience worse. I put my background and gaming likes in the first post so you knew where I was coming from. The people b1tching about, although not saying it explicitly, are make it clear that they dont enjoy a challenge and need their hands held throughout the game. For them I suggest they check out TOR

AFAIK there isn't one yet, even if there were still doesn't give him the right. It's like saying since you can ignore me it gives me the right to incite people to violence through religous hate ... sorry it doesn't actualy.

    ...

You really do believe that you are objective?  Nothing to say, I've the same background. Jedi pre patch 9 on SWG, I like Eve, but to be honnest your message is too subjective to be helpful. It's not because your mom tells you that you are an objective person that you really are.

I will not advice anyone to buy this game before march and the graphic revamp. I don't want to disguss my guildmates, I know that even if they play only one day to what is online currently, they'll never come back. We all have heard enough lies coming from $o€ to know how careful we should be with developper promises.

The one thing which is alarming is that on SWG, the devs were only promising battlefields, a GCW rewamp, but not a patches promising to fix  terrible performances . What if the patch doesn't come in March? Most of the players who bought the game are simply not able to run it on their computers! The minimum requirement written on their site is fraudulent. LOL is it really playable with 512mo of ram? WIth 8giga i've problems...

Ah... I am one of the most vocal complainers or the game on the boards... I am not gonna lie. Now let me caveat that with I DO like the game. And WANT to play the game, but there are just some seriously fundemental features missing, and a few things about launch were misleading.

First off, tell me, why did they wait till LAUNCH day to move the game to the live servers in ANOTHER country? No WONDER we have problems.

The FPS issues with textures not loading into the cache? They knew about that since WAY back in beta, STILL havent fixed it, what makes me think they will fix it now?

Missing basic features like friends list? IGNORE? And thats not all, thats just a few things.

They have a good solid core under all these technical issues, but thats about it. Frankly they should have never released this early. The game is in my opinion still in DEEP beta.

They offered us a free month So I have no reason not to stick around, but this game never EVER should have been released in this state.

There are many deeper issues then texture cache problem.

#1 The game only uses 1 CPU, i7core, dual core, quad core, you are shit out of luck. And dont give me some bullshit like some people on forums who say it uses more then one, I personnaly have checked, and the Development team has specifically said its only single thread.

#2 It is 32 bit. When we have been in 64 bit age for a while now. I dont think I need to tell you the performance loss you give up by NOT going 64 bit. (The floating point processing for example, which is essential to most big 3D games)

I've read you complaining on the official boards Odd, and yeah that's what they're there for. The launch hasn't been bad compared to most I've been present for, but remember I've never been at a totaly smooth launch. MHS fluffed up with the codea, the game is a bare bones SWG married to a thinking mans Tabula Rasa. There is alot to come and I'm excited to see how it develops in the coming months, performance needs help more so for some than others so that's going to be some weeks/months of optimization.

There are no game breaking bugs (for me), no nasty suprises (what happened to that feature?) and no memory leaks or constant server crashes with evil down times. A relative success as MMORPG launches go, for myself anyhow.

Ok, that's more serious than what I was fearing. Do you reasonably believe it can be fix in the next month?

I'm playing fallen earth, I had planned to move to Earthrise today but from what I've seen IG  I'm a bit skeptic. I'll move to Earthrise, but I really hadn't seen such a failed release since DnL/ MO. When I look to Mortal Online and see that most of its problems are still unresolved today, I can only be a bit scared for the future of earthrise.

It's a great game, but if it's stay more than 1 month in this state, it is dead.

  • OddzballOddzball Member Posts: 31

From my experience, no, it aint gonna be fixed in 1 month.

The irony is the game runs great if you have Windows XP and an old 1 core/dual core CPU(3 gig or higher). But not for those of us with top of the line systems.

Stick with Fallen Earth IMO.  I know that Icarus has been kind of dragging their feet releasing new content, but currently FE is a much better game than Earthrise IMO.  I can run FE on max, shadows, everything, and I get great FPS and the game looks wonderful.  I can't even run Earthrise on every single setting at it's lowest.  It has got to be one of the worse optimized game engines I have ever seen in my life.  Stuttering and hitching non stop...and yeah yeah, they are supposedly going to fix this.  But c'mon, it can take a TON of time to get performance issues like that under control, and I just have a bad feeling that they will not be able to make the game more playable any time soon.

I did like the game in beta somewhat, the basic framework is there for a fun game, it's just not worth the 50 bucks for me currently.
