Rift In One Sentence

infofrontinfofront Member UncommonPosts: 160

It's an all-around half-hearted effort, and a semi-polished, poorly implemented, poorly coded, vanilla-WoW clone.

Bonus Sentence: If it was coded well enough to run well on mid-range hardware, this game might've been considered good in 2004.

pretty much i mean its your opinion but in all honesty the two things that the general mmo community think about when the topic of RIFT comes up is that its masterfully encoded, extremely polished, and it is nothing like vanilla wow.

If every MMO were to list out the successes and discard the failures, ensuring that with every generation the added list of successes is implemented in each successor, you would eventually recieve a product VERY closely resembling Rift.

(You can choose to call it what you want but this is a themepark that sucks you in.  If you LIKE WoW, WAR, EQ, etc, you'll like this game.  If you like sandbox games like DF or Eve, you may not.  To each their own opinion.)

Doubtful, MMO standards in 2004 were a hell of a lot higher than now, as they were being played by core MMORPG gamers. WoW taking off was the result of tapping into the market of RTS gamers and Runescape players that didn't like real MMOs.

Funny how the op likes to pick on Rift always.

    "

Rift would be good if it was released in 2005.

As of now, WoW simply outdoes Rift at everything that matters. The questing, in particular, isn't even close. Rift bored me out of my mind. I guess Cataclysm has spoiled me.

Also funny how the op claims Rift isn't polished, but lets see is wow polished? Nope, new expansion is full of bugs.  Maybe the op is mad because he couldn't do is stupid valentines quest today because... It's bugged. lol what a moron. =D

    9.7 million pre-orders can't be wrong!

Rift took the chocolate from chocolate cake, the ice cream from ice-cream-waffles and the mayo from french-fries.

So they mixed the chocolate, ice-cream and mayo together in the hopes it would turn out ok.

It didn't really work and it tastes sort of funny.

I understand where you're coming from, I just don't think Rift accomplished this. I don't want to sound like a WoW fanboy, but since, WoTLK WoW has really taken questing to a whole new level. All I've seen in Rift are the tired kill quests and such that have been boring for years, so I really don't see it even coming close to meeting WoW's PvE successes. That's not even mentioning PvP.

Right, show us a link to this data, if you are refering to Rift.

All I have to say is that I'm impressed by the effort the team behind Rift is putting in and it's the first beta ive played in a long time that imrpovements are constantly being made to the game and feedback is being listened too, as for how polished it is, well the press lately has been saying that Rift feels like a fully released game not a Beta, speaks for itself.

As for the game I havn't put in alot of playtime into this game but I have been following it for a while and participated in the first beta event and I thought at first "Oh it's just a high quality sterotypical MMORPG with all the same features" but after a while I found that there is more to this game than meets the eye, the Rift events are crazy and the invasions are just as impressive.

One goal of Rift was clearly to mimic the experience of WoW, while adding some minor features and changing the setting, etc. In this man's opinion they've clearly failed on that first point, and that's a biggie since that's where they hedged their bets. If I really want to play WoW, I'll just play WoW. It's tired and old, but it does WoW better than anyone else.

He's just pouring gasoline on the fire.  Rift would be lucky to get 500,000 preorders.

    I think 200k to 300k is likely.

in all honesty when WoW came out I basically felt the same way. I said to myself 'yeah but its a cartoon not many players are going to tollerate that moving forward'...

    oops

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I'm playing on a 2 year old set up. It's mid range now. Q6600 with a HD4870 video card. I can run this game on max without any issues.

    Dunno what you're doing wrong.

Bugs are to be expected to an extent. You surely don't see me listing all of Rift's bugs. Polish is about a lot more than that. It's about smooth animations, smooth graphical effects, sound effects, the "feel" of the game's controls, the quality of questing, the thought that went into skill design, and most especially, the way that these things are all tied together.

It's not the coding, for one it is a dx9c,it has bandwidth limitations.Number two is the game has a lot of animation going on screen, that is always a system hog. There is also a lot of mobs, which is part of that animation ,because they are fighting and walking around.

IMO Trion could and SHOULD elimnate some of the mobs ,there are a few too many floating around. The animations however are a nice touch, reminded me of entering Vanguard or Warhammer, very lively :D

Gaming in general is bad all around, you can't blame Trion or center them out as the sole flunkie, they are all as bad.I personally do not have a great system, but i turned textures and important things up and turned some unimportant stuff right off and i had a decently playable game.I also played on the highest resolution, forget what it was ,i think 1600x1080?or something liek that and kept some lighting high as the woprld was sort of too dark and most textures are dark as well.

Shadows/shaders /reflections anything like that ,just turn it right off and keep view distance respectable.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I know 9.7 million people who would disagree with that assumption.
