Well I've been in a few days, and I am enjoying my myself, but a bit discouraged...
I will admit, I am playing solo currently, and I understand that is going to make things much more difficult. I took fishing for food, scavaging for random items, and toolcrafting.. After a getting my scaveging up to apprx. 31 (from 25), I have found very few items, a couple of bones, some granite, and a glove recipe. Is there a point where my scavenging will start having a decent chance to get items? Or does skilling up just allow you a larger variety of different items? I have been looking for flint (near granite)to start a fire, and have had no luck. And from what i understand i still need a pick to get some rock.... A bit frusterating to say the least, and I do realize playing solo isn't helping, but i'm just doing that during the beta, to get a better feel for the game.
I fought my first coyote last night, while the fighting was certainly archaic, still brought a grin to my face...
While walking around this morn...still looking for flint.. I happened on some type of player created town. It was smallish and consisted only of a few small rudimentory buildings, with a bright fire in the middle. I couldn't help but smile and think how fantastic it was after been walking around for a day or so and not seeing a whole lot of anything, but small (starter) camps, mountains, woods, and water.
A lot of folks say you can't judge a game by just playing a few hours of a beta. Maybe, maybe not. I however do know what I am looking for in a game, and what I am not, and this one honestly has the begginings of what I have been looking for. Its going to take some work yet, but I'm willing to give it an honest shot
Its defiently not for everyone, and probably not for most, but it has me pretty interested.

Really keep your eyes peeled for that flint, it pops up on you fast and is gone with the next step.
I've played the game 2 nights now and have managed to find 6 pieces of flint, and that's traveling quite a bit.
The rocks you need to start a fire can be any rock. Limestone works, granite works, etc... just grab those fromt the resource list as you walk over them. I have no pick and have had no trouble... maybe it's another tool I have that's allowing me to do that, but it doesn't appear to be.
You'll still need a "knife blade" to strike the flint, not sure if anything else works in place of that... nothing I had worked. It took me both night to find a knife blade.
Joining a tribe last night was an amazing experience. Finding them without a map or compass, was an awesome adventure. Then to see it all in progress, the leantus and teepees, the huts and bridges, the walls and tons of baskets filled with stuff. The armor, the weapons, the items like dollar bills and quarters, flip tops and old stuff from the lands we have lost... the people contributing and using things. It really changed things for the better, for me. But I was also loving it prior to that.... although I was definitely feeling the sting of the challenge, but that's awesome
You sound like you like the game, I hope things start to fall into place for you and you can truly enjoy it, even more so than you already are I can tell you this, there are a lot of people out there willing to help with stuff you might need. Finding them will be a challenge, but I know just from this tribe i joined that they are there... of course, there are a lot of people looking to gut ya too!
Hang in there if you can
I'm not sure about the scavenging but you could probably trade for some flint with a local Tribe. I'm building up my supplies right now so I have some goods to trade. In our area we still haven't found a junk pile so we're figuring out what we can trade and what's plentiful in the area.
Do you have a friend who can play with ya? I think two is a lot easier than one. Solo is going to be kind of rough at the start. However, there will be other solo players at launch so that will be a good time to do some trading since everyone's going to need something.

Like i said, this game will get an honest attempt from me, just because its off the beaten path of what we seem to typically get these days, and really brings me back to my first MMO days. Though slightly frusterated at the ever elusive flint beast, I am enjoying myself.
I think part of me likes the idea of soloing and trading with local tribes, but we'll see how that goes. I certainly had plans on joining a tribe at release, and can definetly see the benefits aside from making things "easier".
Oh, and i have a knife blade... Progress!! ; )
Also, don't be shy and ask in local. I rarely see help requests turned down in chat. People seem quite helpful...at least for now.
I usually solo in MMOs, but I found a good group of guys and I am enjoying the collective effort we are all doing. I would suggest doing that.
Best way to get Flint is ..........Fishing... Stand on a Tile that shows granite under your feet , every cast will resest the resources at that tile giving a chance for Flint , i have gotten over a dozen using this method..
Scavenging is in some ways random as you can get some really good stuff early on but as it improves that chance of course becomes greater ... With 80 scavenging .. this morning i aquired three very nice weapons 4 recipes and 2 complete tools Shovel and a Pick
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr youuuuuuuu!
Yesterday I would have traded all 6 flint (and a raccoon head) for that thing lol
I think soloing in this game will be extremely rewarding eventually, but very frustrating initially. Once you find a few trsutworthy tribes to do business with, I can't see why you couldn't trade for pretty much anything you might need. It really is the perfect setting for that type of play. Asa a solo player, you will be as important to the community as the biggest tribe, if you have what someone needs (that knife blade for example )... and that'svery likely!
i wish for you, much flint!
To me, this game feels like a magnet for like-minded gamers. The community is great because we know it's up to us to make it work. I've never experienced anything like this before.
WoW was my first MMO about 3 years ago. I don't hate WoW because it got me started and I was in a nice guild with the fine people. But I don't want to go back to that type of gaming experience. I've played a lot of different games of all varieties, including so-called sandboxes, since I started with WoW about 3 years ago, probablylike most of the people playing Xsyon now.
But this game is something different. And as others have said, it feels like something special can happen here. I'm looking forward to launch.
Is there any kind of conflict in Xyson?
I mean I understand where they're going, I'm thinking something like "the postman" =P or maybe some kind of "economic system" will arise with trade over rare resources? any kind of competition or conflict really?
There will be conflicts, territory, resources, at least, alignment (evil, neutral, good tribes), after Prelude we geet rampaging zombies and cannibals and in addition, safe areas will be removed.
Marcus, do you walk around with the ressource tab open? It tell you when you are on something usefull. As for flint, I found about 6 in 2 hours of mountain exploration.
Yessir,
Just no luck when i find it...
tried using scorch's method, and it popped up a bit more often, now just waiting for the lucky roll of the die ; )
Flint and/or Quartz can be found on granite areas, same situation with Chalk - on mountains (not rivers side) dry limestone areas, same with Shells on sand..
I have a funny Flint story. I too have been looking everywhere. I happened to go down into a section that had 2 steep waterfalls, the only way out was 'in the mist'. After blindly trying to find my way out for well over an hour I stumbled upon my elusive Flint! Bad news is I was so far away from the edge of the mist, and still trapped, that I just deleted and started over. Oh well!
Thanks for the fishing tip, I'll try that when I get home!
Yup .. if you are a fisher it is really great .. you up your skill get food and the bonus of easy Flint..
As a fisherman, this thread delivers thanks!
It sounds like a bug to me. You realize that everyone should be reporting it right? Everyone loves the game, yay!, its a great new thing. Woo hoo! Now lets all exploit selfishly.
I learned and have the tools and mats to make Anglers rods. I seem to be catching a lot more fish.
Errr no its not an exploit.. its part of the games mechanics.. ... Whenever you perform an action on a tile your Perception skill has a chance to uncover resources .... Maybe go read and learn a little about the game before foolishly accusing people of exploits..
Excuse me? Who's exploiting selfishly? It's beta. It's being watched and talked about openly. If it's unintended, it will get fixed.
