Actually I am put off by the whole twitter in game thing as well.

I hate twitter; but when a companies site goes down and I have a chance to get info on what/why instantly, rather than waiting for their site to come back up, I use it.

Though it is a minor thing that I dont need to use and it will be a + for others, so all good in the long run.

    Exactly.

It's the first day of open beta and everyone is hammering the servers.

Better they find out the server limitations before release than after because then the OP would be here whining abut how they didn't adequately test the game in beta and he wants his $50 dollars back or he's filing a class action law suit against Trion because their game didin't deliver what they said it would and finally, it's the worst gaem evar!

Relax OP, it beta.  Specifically open beta for which the purpose is extreme stress testing of the servers to see what they can and cannot handle.

Sorry, THe LotrO beta was perfect. I am used to that kind of quality. :P

You must've only been in the open beta because I can assure you in the alpha and closed beta things were not so smooth for LOTRO either.

Nope, if you dont like it dont use it, its completely 100% optional

It is not about it being optional or not.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I totally agree! How DARE those Trion guys use a TEST to TEST the game!

How DARE there be any problems whatsoever before the game is released?!

And LoTRO had all the complexity of Super Mario when it launched. Of course it was crazy stable, the devs didn't have anything else to do (unless you count making the worst animations in human history as actually doing something).

Poor little Beta site was not made to be rushed by that many people at once. ALSO!!

== US Beta Servers DOWN for Network Fixes - 2/15/2011 4:05pm PST [12:05am GMT] ===

    Hi all --

HUGE apologies for the unbroadcasted server drop - several servers were having network issues that we are in the process of fixing and will apply for all US servers while they are down for this.

I'll keep you updated on the server return status here!

Heads up for those of you not seeing your characters on the originally affected servers -- they are still there, the data was unavailable due to the above network problem we're in the process of correcting.

    EDIT:

EU Servers are receiving the same server tuning updates being applied to the US servers through a hotpatch process that won't involve bringing the servers all the way down.

The reason it went to facebook and twitter for updates is because when the server went down, it affected the official forums. They were down. It might be part of the data servers they were talking about that went down.Or the influx of people hammering the site caused it to go down.

Exactly. God forbid a company use all information avenues to communicate with their clients.

I wouldn't speak of animations too much if I were you as it is not arguably the biggest asset of RIFT either.

Anyway, this is beta, it is normal the servers could crash, had experienced several lagging today in the game

Actually I feel the contrary. There was a status update on facebook 3 mins after the servers went down explaining what was going on and that no characters are getting wiped. I was just jumping on facebook after crashing, thought I might check my Evony game. Found out more there from this site.

No, you're wrong. If the servers are down and the rabid players have killed the forums, then they need to call each and every player individually, explaining the situation. And then buy us all pizza.

Seriously, though: What company doesn't use twitter and facebook these days? It's cheap, fast, reliable and everyone knows about it...except for a few people, apparently.

Not only that, but its not uncommon when servers go down in the beta that the forums get knocked down. Not because they are using the same server, usually they dont, but all the traffic hitting it at once. First place I checked when the servers went down was the official forums. It said the forums was busy, other times saying it couldnt connect to webpage. Yes, I think the twitter and facebook was an excellent choice. Plus they advertise it under the community menu on the home page as another resource for updates. I say Trion is doing well in communication. And this is the first time the servers went down unexpectedly since Beta 1 and this is number 7 and also its Open beta which is used for stress testing anyway.

I agree although this is beta I figure the Launcher should be able to tell us info like this or even if the servers are up

I guess its ok to use Facebook, and Twitter, to update players.  Still they should have other methods of communicating as well.  And I'm not talking about their Forums... Maybe something on their Frontpage, with server status and estimated downtime.  I personally would not touch Facebook, or Twitter, with a ten foot pole.

Considering a huge % of the world's population has Twitter & FB accounts I'm not sure I agree. Take into account that almost everyone who plays pc games probably has one of those two accounts and you have an excellent medium with which to communicate & advertise your game.

this is true, they could have a live server status page.

I am so noiviz about the free open beta srverz being down guyz, I hope they don't delete my guyz they mean so much to me.

Enjoying Rift so far, despite thinking that I wouldn't. I have no complaints about a server crashing during a beta. Trion has been far more communicative than most companies and I see no problem with using a modern method of information delivery.

This is exactly what happened to me. I used my account tab to contact customer service and had an email back in 15 minutes explaining the situation. I went out to eat dinner, came back, and everything was fine.
