I've tried FFXI about three or four times now. Even bought it on Steam. But always give up because I couldn't find newbies like myself to get together with. That and the fact there's no new player tutorial so I never had a clue what to do and gave up after a week or so. But something draws me back to the game for another go every year or two.
I'm willing to give it another go if it's with a good group of mates from the start.

There is a new tutorial now, not a big one but still enough to help newbies to know what to do at start.

Well, they must hide this new tutorial in a very inconspicuous place because I definitely haven't seen it since I've been back - it's just been the same "start a character, take part in a intro cutscene, ask a few very simple questions like [Where can I fight monsters?] and then your sent on your way". It's the same as it was when I first started playing years ago. As a matter a fact, I spent about an hour or so explaining all the basics (and a few of the more advanced) mechanics of the game to a brand new player today (which mostly revolved around the interface), and he was astounded at the amount of stuff that he had no clue about - heck, I was astounded at how much he didn't know, but then I remembered how it was for me the first time I played.
As it stands now (unless it's hidden somewhere) the game currently still doesn't have anything that constitutes as a real tutorial and considering the considerable learning curve the game requires, that's something SE should have done years ago.

Ah, yeah I guess that's new, but it still leaves a lot to be desired as far as a tutorial goes. Making it a lot more thorough would be a good step.

I dont not agree, but I'm not sure what specifically that your looking for.
There won't ever be a "how to play the game" tutorial, like you see in games like WoW etc.
This game wants you to have to figure out some stuff on your own. The Quest guy, shows you just about all the basics you need to know up til about level 10. Signet, Eating, weapon skills, etc. If I was a new player, I'd def. be "lost" but in a good way. But thats just me.

There's no excuse for not teaching the basics of a cumbersome interface. The "tutorial" barely covers any of the different menus that are available for one thing. I'm not saying they should tell people "how to play the game" I'm just saying that they should explain, in depth, how to navigate and use the interface, which they clearly don't. It's even more ridiculous for people who use the keyboard setup since the defaults don't seem at all practical.
They also don't tell players about resting, how to cast lots on items versus just using the random system, what the macro codes are for spells, abilities, etc, how to reply to a tell, how to flag yourself LFG (which is still required to even be invited to a group, which never made any sense to me), how to accept a trade from another player, how to receive your money when an item sells in the AH, and the list goes on and on. These are simple things that I've had to explain to new players time and time again, and it shouldn't be that way. I had a strategy guide when I first started playing, plus I had been playing EQ (which was closely as difficult at the time) so it wasn't a problem for me, but people coming from a game like WoW expect a little more help, and honestly, given how steep the learning curve is of this game, I don't think that's really all that unreasonable. What exactly would it hurt to at least offer an "optional", more in-depth tutorial to the game? How would that impede upon the current playerbase? Just because we had to do it the hard way doesn't mean it should stay that way. I play games to play them, not to waste time learning how to work the interface to play them correctly.
Edit: To be fair, the moogle in the mog house explains about the delivery box and other stuff within the house, but now that I think about it, I don't believe the tutorial guy even mentions anything about the mog house in the first place, so I can imagine that some new plays may not realize until later on that they even have access to it. I might be wrong about it not being mentioned though.

Like I said I'm not disagreeing with you.
The only things I'd add, are that its 9 years old. It was also a console game first, and PC game second. If you started on a console, for me at least it was second nature. Everything else I learned as I went. I know its not that way for everybody, but again.. this thread is not about complaining about what the game does or does not have.
We know its faults, and we live with those faults or play something else. We have a ton of people playing right now who are all enjoying the game and company of people who have the same mindset. To not further derail this topic from its intended purpose, lets agree that things aren't exactly as they should probably be, but what game is?

See my ^above post^ There is a New Player Guide that covers everything you just complained about FFXI not having, and yes its very in-depth, zooming in on text & the maps, explaining how things like the AH and menus work with informative charts. It will also show you all the controls for the PS2, 360 & KB with silhouettes of the controllers to make it even easier to understand.
The link is on their PlayOnline website in the top left corner, or in my other post above ~ you can't miss it!

That's definitely a valid point; it's an older game and because of that the learning curve is naturally going to be a good bit steeper. The only reason I even advocate a better in-game tutorial is for the "wet behind the ears" gamers that are only used to playing games like WoW, but are looking for something more in-depth. You can imagine that a game like FFXI is pretty daunting to someone who's not used to the mechanics of these older mmos. They need all the direction they can get when starting up for the first time.
As for the PlayOnline tutorial video, I had completely forgot that it even existed, and it definitely falls in line with what I was talking about. It just needs to be advertised in-game a bit more, and maybe even incorporated into the game itself somehow for convenience. I'll make sure to start pointing new players to it from now on.
Back on topic, a Linkshell like this is really the epitome to what a new player needs - a group of like-minded players (new and old) to experience the game with right from the beginning. And maybe most important, having veterans (like yourself) in the LS makes the initial experience for new players way easier. You don't really need a strategy guide when you're surrounded by informed players.
Awesome man. It's nice that someone on here can reach out to so many whom want that old feeling again and succeed. If i wasen't playing WoW and had more time i would do it. Anywho, Goodluck with your objective m8 and to all of you, have a great adventure!

I've thought about returning to Vanadiel lately. I was originally a BST, one of the original way back in the day. I've been quit for several years. I just might install this game and give it another go.
You guys are on Titan server, and you need melee DD ?
As for the game itsself not telling you how to play: this is what manuals where created for. Back in the north american release, I read the manual from cover to cover. I knew how to play, about mog houses, signet, crystals, crafting, and food before I had the game installed on my computer. If you don't read the manual, it;s your fault you don't know what to do.
The steep learning curve are for aspects of the game play that arent covered in the manual. Try playing a thief, hitting 30 and everyone expecting you to know how to set up a Sneak Attack-Trick Attack right off the bat. Or being a MNK, and finding out that Boost stacks! Or the very touchy mechanics of hate management while playing Paladin, or even Warrior or Dark Knight. Learning not to over-heal as a White Mage, over nuke as Black Mage. Mobs hate it when you hit them with fireballs. They REALLY hate it.
The Manual will teach you the basics, it doesn't have to be an in-game tutorial.

i was going to say the same thing, but alot of people buying the game online from steam and places like it, I don't think it comes with any kind of manual. I have one for all the hard copies of the game, but i don't know that you get that with the digital versions.

Almost done with my updates. I am sooo totally gonna make a Galka and he's gonna be a Dark Knight. I almost have my fiance convinced to come back and play it. Fingers crossed, guys.
Plan: Gonna level monk from 1-18 to get sub job. then travel to Windurst and level both WHM and BLM to level 10, quest for Drain scroll. Then run to San d'Oria, and level Warrior up to about 20-25, while questing to raise fame. then back to Bastok to do missions and quests until Rank 3. Then I get Aspir, and continue Warrior to 30-35-ish, and switch off to Dark Knight.
Ok, so I bought the game and patched it, and now it turns out i gotta wait two weeks until I can create a char on the titan server >.<
Guess ill create a temp character to learn the game and play some xiv instead.
Yeah, it's those darn server merges. Titan is moving to Phoenix, so they're not lettin anyone create new characters on either of em. But yeah, you'll be creating your character on the Phoenix server.
Pre-welcome.

Well Playonline neglected to say that registering a new card was unavailable and was clear SE CS was unaware also. Well I'm in the game again but got to wait till server merger to join.

Always wanted to try this game, Such a big FF fan. Just don't have the cash or time currently Else I would most definitly join you guys.

Yeah, it's those darn server merges. Titan is moving to Phoenix, so they're not lettin anyone create new characters on either of em. But yeah, you'll be creating your character on the Phoenix server.

Well Playonline neglected to say that registering a new card was unavailable and was clear SE CS was unaware also. Well I'm in the game again but got to wait till server merger to join.
