You could look into Mabinogi. Pretty decent game.

eq2 extended is sort of free,a litle restricting but still free and has extensive crafting.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Everquest 2 extended has  Great crafting and no PVP. Customer service i've found no faults personally. Solid population at all  level ranges so far...

Perfect World is a pretty f2p with some crafting that might be of interest. Be warned you'll have to grind for the materials though..

ATITD is a nice P2P with some of the best crafting in the MMO industry, and a 24-hour (in-game time) trial to check it out.  Wurm has a very limited F2P system with similar crafting, but items deteriorate at a tremendous rate.

Neither of these games are as good as Eve or SWG, but they're very nice on their own merits.  Enjoy!

This and Mabi is what I would have suggested, even though the OP seems to not dig the latter either way.

Wurm's free trial server is still there (I think), but around the last time I logged in they allowed everyone onto the PvE server with the same skill limits. It's the return of "basic accounts"... basically. So the extreme decay is no longer a problem.

I would suggest giving Mabi another try though, because the crafting there is pretty intricate. You play a minigame with pretty much everything, like using the mouse to clear a stitch for clothing, etc. It's pretty cool, but without paying for extra inventory space you really have to go out of your way to collect and use things on the spot to get into crafting.

You could try Horizons.  As long as you play the Human race, it's free to play with no restrictions.  It's very heavy crafting oriented.
