The problem with getting gamer's opinions on new games is they have to be on one extreme side or the other. The game is either horrible or the greatest mmo ever. Is there ever a middle ground? Can a game be just ok. I've played and enjoyed games that got terrible reviews by gamers on this site, while having to scratch my head at some of the games that got glowing reviews. Only thing to do is bite the bullet and get the game to see for yourself, or wait for a trial, imo.
Rift is okay. Im having fun playing it. The Rifts and Invasions are fun. The soul system is interesting. It feels more like a multiplayer online game where I occasionally do PVE quests.
Aethetically, they have a major hurdle to get over. It doesnt really define itself other than it's play mechanics. Everything feels generic. This isnt an established world brimming with personality and character like WOW which has had years to establish itself. Your race doesn't have levels and levels of back-story to immerse you...everyone pretty much starts right on top of each other and you stand in line at the NPC quest vending machines. The PVE quests feel uninspired. So what is left, is a fun gameplay mechanic with a fantasy window dressing...and it's the play mechanics that make it addicting.
My biggest problem with RIFT is that it's SMALL. One continent and two starting areas. I realize this is more of a new MMO symptom than the fault of Trion. Thats my problem though...exploration is a big thing with me...and Rift feels more like a trip to Disney World than the New Zealand that is WOW.
As far it being the WOW killer...it definitely is not that unless you've been playing WOW for years and have seen everything there is to see. WOW is huge. People who say WOW is dead because of Rift must think that the current generation of players are the very last people on Earth who will ever play World of Warcraft.
What Rift is, is a different more "action oriented" take on the MMORPG genre. You'll do a lot more running around with people fighting off waves of enemies which staves off the boredom of their generic PVE quests. It fits nicely as a second MMORPG...at least, that is what it is for me.
I think once all the hype dies off you'll have a steady player base for Rift maybe around 150k-200k players... For me the game is just to boring, haven't gotten this bored with a MMO since Champions Online.
The whole Rift system is nothing more then a gimmick which becomes boring pretty quick. Doesn't help that in order to place well in the rift you have to spam you fastest attack over and over again, otherwise you end up on the bottom of the chart and get squat. So strategy doesn't play a big part in Rift's or Dungeons for that matter, there all just your typical Tank and Spank...
Rift is a decent MMO, but it's not going to offer anything new over other MMO's, so unless you want more of the same your probably going to get bored with it after a month or two...

Why do you get the feeling that you haven't even run IT but here you are talking about Rift. There is some stratetgy to the boss fights (spoiler: there is always 1 player who dies in the last boss fight since for love of good people can't pay attention to NPC chat). As for contribution in Rifts it not just about attacks but attacking the right target, heals and threat also factors in.
For people trying to figure out firsts popluation, there are about 70 servers, only about 3 are low during prime time, there are often about 10 servers with queues of 200 and up. The rumor that rift servers can only handle about 1500 players is apparently not true as seen on a sticky on the forums.
Can each shard only hold 1500 players?
I keep seeing references to a dev saying that each sever would only hold 1500 people. The actual quote was from a very old IRC chat where one of our devs was talking about numbers for that current beta as the servers were opened. We do not release specific numbers about our servers. But we saw higher numbers with each beta and the same thing applies to release. The 1500 rumor is false.
So using simple math... Since all servers are basically high/full we will assume they all have the same population (just barely full) for the sake of simplicity, this will hold true as not all players play at the same time.
Just to answer your question rifts are different in each zone so water rift will spawn different bosses and has different appereance. Find it kinda ironic you would quit right at 20 right when you can switch over to a new zone.
as i stated in my post, is my experiecen of to where i stopped playing.. no irony in there, maybe a water Rift in another zone spawns different mobs than a water Rift in the lvl 1-20 zone (which is ok then) but quest wise i like go PvE following the lore (to find the point of PvEing in a game) and that became boring for me in Rift. if i want to pve in a game that has no lore (which is not the case here).... i would just go f2p with a crappy game that has no story related to game (pve wise)

There is a lore if you paid attention to it not as good as Cata or Wotlk or Vanilla WoW but better than BC.

indeed there is a lore in Rift, thats why i like to go PvE and questing in Rift to follow its lore, but its got boring already (for me) so i stopped it... ive never been a PvP driven player
I mostly want to hear that bad parts about Rift, but also tell me what it offers.
It's basically WoW meets WAR meets EQ2, combines them and throws them into a new set of lore. It takes the parts of these games and makes it one. If you're looking for something new then no it doesn't do that but if you want familiar items from 3 games rolled into one and incredibly polished then this is FANTASTIC...
Anyone who can do this with an openmind would be great. You don't have to bash it, just tell me what it lacks and what it offers.
I find the movements to be sluggish and the delay between button presses before something will trigger to be quite annoying, It's not as seemless as WoW's response time but I can live with it.
Thank you, and flamers keep out of this one please
Is it fun for you?
At first I would have said no simply because it was WoW and it had a been there done that feeling to it...UNTIL I experienced a MAJOR RIFT in the starting area complete with a RAID BOSS with 700k HP and just about 60 people between levels 10 and 19 working together to take it out. I mean a death rift opened and the entire starting area was flooded with NPC's taking control of towns and then summoning a raid boss. An by entire area I mean the WHOLE starting area...tons of NPC's running down the road to the nearest town and taking over the wardstones in them (wardstone are like town flags that give buffs). At first i though it was your normal themepark until that rift. First time in a long time I didn't care about leveling and decided to have some actual fun and enjoy myself. I come from Pre-Tram UO and have high standards on how much a game can suck you in. I mean there hasn't beenanother game I played that I lost track of time because I was having fun running around killing things. So for me to have that feeling, I realized that Trion managed to do something that only one other game could do...Entertain me for hours on end.
Is it addicting?
Read Above
What are the professions like?
Basic WoW. You got 3 harvesting professions and 6 crafting professions. I kinda wish they would have something like engineering but eh...No where near Pre-AoS UO level crafting (most engaging crafting EVER btw) but not the absolute worst (WAR has that distinction).
What is the PvE like?
Pretty Standard...though as a rogue (saboteur) I find I have to be careful with how much I pull cause you can and will die. The RIFT's are the best part though to me...
What is the PvP like?
I've only experienced the first Warfront (WoW's BG's and WAR's Scenario's) and I had fun. At level 12 I managed to take out higher level classes and at one time was the highest damage dealer. I can see where some builds can be imbalanced but then again they never said balanced PvP was their aim.
Does anything about Rift standout as different?
The Rift's and the fact that it was a finished game upon release...thats about it. Basically I put it this way...not strong enough to kill WoW but it is what WAR should have been. WAR put themselves in their position and I have a feeling RIFT might actually be what shuts down WAR's remaining servers...or make it go F2P to stay afloat.
I looked through you last 20 posts and they are all bashing Rift. Why does this game threaten you so much? If you don't like it...just don't play it. Why do you take it so personal? Did Rift touch your private spots? ....I don't get people like you. I feel sorry for people like you.
Personally, I'm playing Rift and having a blast. I expect to have lots of fun for a long time to come playing Rift. The only negative I see is issues with performance. Folks with kick butt machines are hard pressed to play on max settings.
So....your entitled to your opinion, but he's not because he doesn't like the game?
It's a public forum, his opinion is equally as valid as yours, if you can't respect that, why should anyone respect your opinion?
Also, posting a bash post to flame someone who, according to you, bashes the game is a bit hypocritical.
Imo, a poster posting consistently onesidedly negative - a 'hater', as some call it - about a game is as much biased to the point of wrong as a poster posting consistently onesidedly positive - a 'fanboi' - about a game. Both groups are biased if they can't acknowledge the good and bad of game.
With that difference that a hater shows an unhealthy obsession with a game that's the object of his attention: where fanbois at least talk about a game they play and like, the haters keep posting about a game with which the only bond they have with is one of dislike.
It's like a football fan who hates basketball constantly showing up at basketball games and gatherings talking all the time about how basketball sucks and people shouldn't play it.
No, not absolutely.
I play Rift, I like Rift, but i post the negatives on a thread asking for honest opinions about the game as there are a lot of genuine negative points about the game....imo ofc.
You come to a forum, your going to read nothing but opinion and every opinion is as valid as the next. You can NEVER say a persons opinion isn't valid, never. Even when what he believes is, in your opinion, 100% wrong, that opinion still has validity, as much validity as your own.
Why can a Football fan not have an opinion about Basketball if he watches the game? Doesn't that make him as much a basketball "fan" as a football "fan"? Negativity is irrelevant, an opinion is an opinion.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
HAHAH and teala you keep chaning your opnion , so fast its boring ....
One week its cool , next week it sucks , its very entertaining to see .
Nothing wrong , just making a observation about people , and your post applies same for WOW classic .
Its a perfect rehersal of a EQ fan back then , exactly the same . its too hysterical .
I do not change my opinion. Show me where I have ever changed my opinion of the game?
From your own blog:
"...You know what? Let you in on a little secret. 2011 just might be a stellar year for MMORPG fans and the first quarter is about to be one of the best we've had in a long time in this genre. Why? Because of a game called Rift: Planes of Telara..."
"...Finally after a long wait...we might actually see the launch of a really cool MMORPG! Yeah! ..."
"...Rift: PoT is a good game, better than average in my book, but it isn’t all sunshine and lollipops..."
Granted that I've copied/pasted this out of context, and your blog does go on and explain many of the game's shortcomings. But the impression your blog gives is generally positive, and now your attitude towards Rift sounds generally negative.
Not that changing your mind is a bad thing... just own up to it...
Is it addicting? Yes I played most of the day yesterday. So much that I think I actually may have had some Rift dreams while sleeping last night.
What are the professions like? Frankly there is too much to say to be succinct here. Basically when you choose one of the 4 callings, you are not shoehorned into the traditional role for that calling. One rogue soul can tank, clarics can tank, and mages can heal. There's a lot of flexibility.
What is the PvE like? I'd say it's pretty standard fare. Normal world mobs are the same as they are everywhere. Rift bosses and invasion bosses can be a bit more tricky. Dungeon mechanics seem to increase in difficulty as you level. I might have almost wiped the group last night by talking to an NPC in a dungeon that turns into a boss. I was stopped by a guildmate who had happened to run the dungeon before.
What is the PvP like? I find it interesting. Warfronts are good and so far I like the premises of The Black Garden (murderball) and The Codex (think Arathi Basin). The next warfront might be kind of meh with a capture the flag mechanic but the last Warfront is supposed to be like an epic Alterac Valley style warfront. For world PvP I've found it enjoyable too. There were some defiants attacking one of our outposts last night while an NPC force was also attacking the area. They got some kills in but we eventually rallied and drove them off. Oh and you can get loot from player corpses too.
Does anything about Rift standout as different? I enjoy the zone wide invasions which is a larger scale that the normal rifts. The dungeons I have seen so far have been beautifully made with their layout and design. The soul system is pure awesome. I think if they add some really good world PvP mechanics then the game will really stand out from everything else.
I've only made it to level 28 so far but i can safely say I have not seen anything truly "different" about Rift. What does it offer?
-The same 4 quests repeated over and over and over
-Generic monsters that are seen in every other fantasy game
-Crafting system, which seems like it was copied completely from another game
-Overly glorified Public quest system (commonly referred to as "rift events") that is the only factor keeping this game from being entirely boring
-Purposely over-complicated class system that is designed to trick players into thinking that there are actually more than just 4 classes, with a skill tree design that has been seen a thousand times before.
Rift is basically just a generic fantasy MMO with a couple slightly modified features that have been seen so many times before.

I have not changed my opinion. If you read what I wrote in this thread and in my blog you'll see that I say pretty much the same thing and tell people that if this kind of game is for you to give it a shot - to actually play it. The game however is not enough for "me". After getting to level 35 in beta I had played enough of the game to see that it is what it is - a theme park MMORPG with limited game play options and will end up like most other games - all about gear. If you like that type of game...then this game might just be a great alternative to WoW.

Like it or not people need a carrot attached to the string to keep them going. Take for example CoH which has no loot and came out the same time as WoW, we all know how ended up getting more subs. Heck even they have implemented a version of loot, currently there is no MMO out there that is not about gear.
I know its fun to come in the forums and whine about things, but if you don't like gear/loot you shouldn't be playing MMORPGs in general....
It will have huge numbers for release. Many servers will added. Few months down the road, servers will be merged. Just like any other game that isn t WOW. I hate WOW, but I think this game will have very little lasting power.
Is it fun for you? It was, then it wasn't, then it was again, then it wasn't. I played all phases of the beta and didn't buy it. If the first part of my answer seems odd, it's because sometimes I felt like chasing rifts and invasions non-stop and other times I wanted to keep my head down and quest without the damned things interrupting me all the time.I didn't feel that the game had enough to offer across the board.
Is it addicting? Not really. I didn't lose track of time while playing it, which is my measure for the "addicitveness" of a game
What are the professions like? Bland. Like WoW except you're more tied to workstations. Some of the crafted gear is good, but you'll still have to make ten of everything to skill up. Adding planar essences makes better gear, bit of a twist. It's kind of like a mash-up between WoW and Aion crafting.
What is the PvE like? Standard MMO fare, not particularly well-written in terms of quest text, KTR and Fed-Ex a go-go. Lots of competing for mobs in certain areas - that or being confronted with insane spawn rates once everyone else has passed through. Auto-grouping for Rifts is useful, but as said above, the Rifts are either a great distraction or an inconvenient PITA. Useful for breaking up quest-grinding, but irritating when they interfere with it. Has some nice quests (I liked the reverse-escort mission, but that's a very early one), but on the whole the questing is standard stuff. Dungeons are well-designed, but tactics are easy to figure out. Again, standard stuff.
What is the PvP like? WoW battlegrounds with less scale and less interesting terrain. Open-world stuff is consensual (PvP flagging). I never got to do a PvP invasion - it did sound like rifting in Aion to a certain extent, but I'm sure someone can fill you in on it more than I can.
Does anything about Rift standout as different? Um, the rifts? Not to be sarcastic, but they are different, they're not as much like the WAR PQs as some like to make out. The soul trees and the ability to switch roles - that, I really did like. One minute a pew-pewing DPS cleric, couple of mouse-clicks later, a pure healer. Great for dungeons and elite rifts. Best time I had in the game was switching spec in beta 4 to tackle an elite rift outside Meridian. Kept everyone alive and had an utter blast. But that kind of moment didn't happen enough for me to pony up for the game at launch.

Name one MMO that doesn't have loot as part of end game? WAR tried it because Mythic listened to players and made loot less relevant and didn't exactly work out that well. Funny after they started losing subs they did 180 and implemented tiered loot system.

That's because War is, just like most recently released games, a theme park game. The only way the developers can keep people playing theme parks is with silly gimmicks like gear, loot, and achievements. Most theme park games are pretty shallow. I am not knocking that style of game...it has it's place, but to say as you seem to think, that loot and gear is the only thing to keep people playing is just silly and shows a lack of imagination on your part when there are many, many other ways to keep people playing.
I have not changed my opinion. If you read what I wrote in this thread and in my blog you'll see that I say pretty much the same thing and tell people that if this kind of game is for you to give it a shot - to actually play it. The game however is not enough for "me". After getting to level 35 in beta I had played enough of the game to see that it it what it is - a theme park MMORPG with limited game play options and will end up like most other games - all about gear.

I would like to add that PvE oriented games share this problem more commonly. But then again not everyone likes PvP, or a real, ongoing, war. (and no I ain't even talking about Eve/my above post, here.)

No there isn't that is human nature you need to have some carrot attached to string to keep players playing even FPS like halo reach have implement some version of loots. As i before name one MMORPG that doesn't have loot.
Even Eve has loot in PvE training skills, salvage, minning, ships etc. You dont all fly around in Titans in day one.
I mostly want to hear that bad parts about Rift, but also tell me what it offers.
Anyone who can do this with an openmind would be great. You don't have to bash it, just tell me what it lacks and what it offers.
Thank you, and flamers keep out of this one please
Is it fun for you?

Does anything about Rift standout as different?
Hi Brib!
You ask some good questions, and I'll do the best I can to answer helpfully.
I just bought the Digital Collector's Edition yesterday - kind of an educated impulse buy.
1. YES! I was pleasantly surprised over and over at the areas, the mobs, the quests, storyline, and overall polish of the game. It has the click - cooldown - click gameplay, but I could not find any way in which to properly compare it to the current MMO behemoth we all love (or hate.) The Rifts can keep you VERY busy, and the quests are nice and steady. The classes and combos seem to be very balanced and the info about each "soul" gives you good FYIs about what combos work good together.
2. Yes and no. I am not getting the addicted feeling I used to with WoW, but yet I still enjoy playing it. I'm able to stop whenever I want to.
3. Haven't tried any.
4. PvE is fun, albeit slower for the magic classes than the melee (as is to be expected in most RPGs)
5. Haven't tried PvP.
6. It's immersive and the gameplay mechanics don't get in the way of the game. It's sort of like GOOD 3D in movies. Good gameplay mechanics enhance or at least don't detract from the game. Rift's is like that. They definitely keep you busy, which is an important factor in any MMO. Lulls in questing or purpose leads to dropped subscriptions. I've been almost too busy. Once about 30 of us close a rift, another is either already opened or in opening shortly thereafter. You often have to decide between questing and rifts sometimes as they pop open often enough that your questing could easily fall behind your levelling.
Hope this helps. Ahh, another thing, it plays very well in Bootcamp on my mid-2010 Macbook Pro. The low-quality renderer mean it runs on a lot of different PCs.
Comments
Assuming:
1500 per server * 70 = 105,000
2000 per server * 70 = 140,000
3000 per server * 70 = 210,000
4000 per server * 70 = 280,000
5000 per server * 70 = 350,000
as i stated in my post, is my experiecen of to where i stopped playing.. no irony in there, maybe a water Rift in another zone spawns different mobs than a water Rift in the lvl 1-20 zone (which is ok then) but quest wise i like go PvE following the lore (to find the point of PvEing in a game) and that became boring for me in Rift. if i want to pve in a game that has no lore (which is not the case here).... i would just go f2p with a crappy game that has no story related to game (pve wise)
There is a lore if you paid attention to it not as good as Cata or Wotlk or Vanilla WoW but better than BC.
indeed there is a lore in Rift, thats why i like to go PvE and questing in Rift to follow its lore, but its got boring already (for me) so i stopped it... ive never been a PvP driven player
these days it seems PvP when you DON'T want to = Gank .
How sad
Please stay on topic and discuss the game, not other posters. /thanks.

Is it fun for you? Yes
