Try Haven & Hearth out: http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/

It's a complete sandbox game created by indie developers. Everything is created by players and the players shaped the world. For example, once you cut a tree down it's gone forever unless you replant it. Players can create villages and towns and pvp. There are no traditional levels, you gain exp from pretty much everything you do and then you can use that exp to level up certain roles like farming, mining, smithing, combat, exploration, etc.

There's way too much for me to explain just check it out. It's very deep and complex.

I like the concept of Xsyon as much as many people. In fact, I've been having a pre-order since October, but the idea of taking away features to make a game a sandbox seems to be a ridiculous notion.

There's nothing wrong with having NPCs. That doesn't make a game less "sandbox." Having quests does not make a game less "sandbox." Having maps does not make a game less "sandbox." Limiting player-choice makes a game less "sandbox." Eve-Online is a good example of a sandbox. Darkfall online would be a good example of a sandbox-cum-Quake with a persistant continent. With all the features still turned off, less than a week before official release, then I'm still not sure how I would classify Xsyon. It certainly has potential and the main dev does listen to the player-base; however he is pretty ignorant when it comes to other MMOs.

I'm not saying that the game should become entirely an Eve-clone, but Eve does have a decade (with ever increasing sub numbers) of learning under its belt where the Eve developers learned a lot of things make for a good game experience.

Xsyon has some good ideas but they need to encourage emergent gameplay while still encouraging players to adopt their own playstyle. The totem system/safezone mostly just encourages planting your safezone over some resources so that you can attack whomever tries to take it without fear of them being able to do anything to do.

I don't see that at all,  resources are limited,  so setting up a totem on a junk pile means very little once the junk pile is gone.  Safe zones are a good idea,  especially for the smaller homesteads and solo/small group players that won't be able to compete with the larger zergs that have requirements, etc.

It's a little Ultima Online-y... Not exactly the immersive world many of us are looking for, but for what it is I'm sure it's fine.

None of us playing Xsyon really cares about that heaven and earth trashheap.. Sorry!

Well unless we can sort some nails out of it

In my opion he who has the squeakiest wheel will get oiled first and what you see now is what you get. When Jordi decides what he will add is also what you will get. Not all will be happy and his decesions will make or break this game.

I still think it's a bad idea that the player gets to choose where to put their safespot. Now, eventually (based on a point that was made by the lead dev in an update a few days ago) that will probably change so that players can only place their safezone in certain areas, and that would be fine with me. But right now, it's a little bit on the imbalanced side. I'm not anti-safezone by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I'm very much in favor of safezones. Just not player chosen.

I think I'm more worried about the size of the safe zones allowed rather than the ability to put them places...    If tribes are too large,  they could potentially have a tremendous safe zone over a junk pile making them virtually invincible.  I think junk pile safe zones should be confined to the size of homesteads no matter how many people are in it.

Me personally,  I like to make my homestead off of junk piles, even though some say its "gimping" myself,  but in the end, if you plant yourself on a junk pile and scavenge it enough, you'll end up with nothing there anyways and be forced to venture out in a heavily crowded area, and one thing I know for a fact in Xsyon is how you treat people goes a long way.  Gankers that have killed me while I was on their land get beat down on the trash pile.. and sooner or later, everyone will need to venture out of their homesteads.
