In more of our first major coverage of Funcom's The Secret World, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood has a report about what he learned during last week's GDC. He's got information about the four pillars of the game, what he saw during the live demo, PvP, the skill system, events and guilds. It's a terrific read so be sure to check it out. Let us know what you think in the comments.
For anyone who may not have been following this game prior to today, The Secret World is Funcom’s newest MMO and takes place on present day Earth. there is, of course, a twist. Everything supernatural you’ve ever heard of is actually real. Your character is a part of a secret society that is trying to stop the darkness that has remained hidden for so long from rising to envelop the world. The game is classless, and built on a skill system. The game’s action takes place primarily in the open world, with only a few instances cropping up. That was what we knew yesterday. Here is what we know today:

to be able to switch rolls any time is garbage.... it will make you feel like ur char is pointless.. cuz everyone is gunna be running around as the same class the (op) class with some healers maken pvp unfun.
Been waiting and watching this one for a long time now, 3 faction pvp....yum!
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
Looks fabulous, one of the few rare occasions when I'm actually positively hyped about a game.
REALITY CHECK
/donsbooknerdhat
Erm, Kingsmouth is more HP Lovecraft inspired than Stephen King inspired...

Lots of info there, really glad to see they're letting more info out at last : )
Aye, Lovecraft had Kingsport and Innsmouth (SW has Kingsmouth) with very similar story premise, which is only for the good in this case. This genre needs a mystery-horror game finally.
REALITY CHECK
Gonna stick with Rift
Looks amazing.
Got away from the trinity, 3 faction PvP, realistic graphics and a modern day setting. Nothing to dislike there and everything going for it.
`For anyone interested, tentonhammer has the actual gameplay videos Funcom showed in GDC in their article:
http://www.tentonhammer.com/tsw/gdc11/gdc2011-videos
# A GRIM, ODD, ARCANE SKY
# ANY GOD, I MARK SACRED
# A MASKED CRY ADORING
# A DREAMY, SICK DRAGON
I just worry the game will attract conspiracy nuts; the "World of Lovecraft" aspects look good though. As someone who bothered to do research on secret societies I find some of the ways they are depicted as pandering, and could be divisive.
I'd still be a whole lot happier if this were anyone other than Failcom. I'm interested, but FC has a really huge mountain of past failures that they need to prove they are past before I will buy another product from them.
looks great !
Which FF Character Are You?
Well, Ao and AoC were despite their bad launches and flaws still interesting games, besides The Longest Journey and Dreamfall were definitely not failures at all, they were great games.
The maker of those last 2 games, Ragnar Tornquist, is now the game director for The Secret World which I think is a good thing.

Which FF Character Are You?
Looks great so far. Tickled my hype gland. Will probably try this. (As long as they eventually release it in a polished state ;-)
My brand new bloggity blog.
Last mention of a release date was Fall the earliest and beginning of next year the latest.

Sounds very good..3 factions shows they have learned how PvP is set to last longer. One would imagine that after the initial trouble they had with faction rewards at rise of kunark, they will also have set a balanced reward system to top it nicely (not a pvp fan myself, but good is good either way). Skills-wise i like the "wheel" mention, anything to avoid the 5 hotkey bars (look down, look up,look down, look up) is well good in my book. And as for the setting..SK-inspired? car alarms!!? i love that, sounds tiny, but its details that make a plot solid, ask Hitchcock : ) Overall very enticing..hopefully it won't follow the 2 previous games, which as enticing as they were for their time, failed to deliver overall at launch time..please oh please do not make it thrice.
ot trying to be mean but videos and SSs means nothing if the game is good or not, wait for it come at least on beta and have some gameplay then you can talk, several games had awesome videos and pics, but in the end was crap...
I'd be interested in a full on pvp server for this game. I mean in a screwed up horror driven game like this not everyone is pals with eachother. Even you on the same side you may decide to go rogue and kill everyone around you to just scavenge what they have. That is more realistic even in a fiction horror game like this one. Add full loot ability to the pvp server and "HEY NOW" this could be very interesting indeed.
I would like them to put some kind of penality on switching skills. What you choose in game should be a difinitive choice and you should have some huge reason to want to switch from your chosen path(granted mistakes happen). Maybe so far as to wipe those points away from you that earned for swtiching or some huge cost of some kind.
Like the concept, uncertain of Funcom after AoC. Hopefully they have learned their lesson. As for the PvP-part, one thing I liked about DAoC was that there was no in-game communication between different factions. No need to ignore people crying after a kill. I would have preferred to have people stick with their 'own' kind, and not the co-op/enemy road.
Sounds good. We'll see when they release... whenever that is.
I'm a little concerned about the sizing scale of most of the enemies we see in the videos and screenshots. Hopefully not every enemy is this enormous boss or elite creature that you have to shoot point blank with pistols for 5 minutes while getting hit repeatedly by a club the size of a car for trivial damage.
SWTOR seems to have it right by having many weaker enemies to make battles feel more epic, instead of everyone pounding on this single behemoth for two days. I know this game needs hype and hype generally means big things that smash stuff for videos and screenshots, but with luck we will see a lot more reasonably scaled battles.
Who else got the inner feeling that this title should be called "THE LOVECRAFTIAN DREAM"?
Um... Kingsmouth is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft... I HOPE.
Sounds really innovative and fun... however the PvP occuring mainly in instances is a bit alarming though. Hope they manage to tie it to the persistant world in a meaningful way.
