I've been fighting through it and playing the game, and the lag is terrible... *much* of the time, but its not always there, and I don't even think it has much to do with the population (in the same sense others think it does anyways).
My area has blown up (zone 777) whereas before I was the only one there come launch, now I have 6 neighbors around me, all of which have been terraforming like crazy. I met most of them yesterday and this morning where I actually played for a number of hours.
The lag was terrible and caused me to get killed by bears more than a couple times, whereas when I'm not lagging I kill bears pretty regularly.
Point is, for every hour I play, about 10 - 20 minutes out of that hour has no lag whatsoever. Without a server restart, without the players around me logging off (we talk pretty constantly in general chat). It just clears up.
In the past 20 hours (10 - 13 of which I was in game) There were 2 server crashes that I experienced, both followed by 10 - 15 minute rollbacks where I would lose my most recent changes (which was mostly just gathering).
It can get frustrating, but the community is fighting through it. The majority of people in my area seem to be european, out of all the people I've spoken to I seem to be the only one from the US. Anyways, the community is really whats kept me going... after meeting my neighbors and helping them, it renewed my vigor to continue playing. They are pretty nice people with some really great ideas on what to do with their tribes, and me being of the helpful nature, I've been a big part on enabling the community in the area. Its pretty much the reason I got into this game in the first place, and even though I'll never deny the game is frustrating and has problems, I'm still going to stick it out for my 2 and a half month stint.
(I don't have anything else i'm really interested in playing right now anyways)

I dont thing the lag is fixable in a near future...the problem is deep in the core of the game...the game cant handle more then a few people online doing different stuff including terraforming...to play without lag they must put a hard cap of max online players of 100, if more people are playing at the same time the server starts to lag like crazy.
He should either get more people with experience to solve the problem fast or go the minecraft way, let the game have private servers run by players with a max of 100 players online at most.
Xsyon was suposed to be a sandbox with everyone playing in the same gigantic world, then after the first or second failed launch they decided to later make another server because they cant handle many players online, the truth is they cant have a true mmorpg game with these sandbox features running with more then ~100 players.
In 1 week time if they dont rollback again..and there are many villages, cut down trees, holes in the ground, walls everywere, mobs, pvp etc the server will be a lag feast....it becomes a lag feast even 12 hours afte a rollback.
Thats quite possible. Are you speaking from personal knowledge?
Hopefully a solution prevents itself. If not, oh well.
^^ Wait, I'm confused? So you do hope the game fails ??
** A freudian typo I assume, but still hilarious considering the context of the argument. **
I played for roughly 2 weeks with the high-hopes that this game was going to be all that the developers promised. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for me) I realized the error in my ways, and was able to get a refund 1 day prior to "pre-launch" (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean anyways...)
I don't know what people expect when they buy games like this. You have a development team of like 3 people, and all the funding is coming from one guy. If you didn't expect something horrible to happen at launch then you were fooling yourself. When the big guys can't get a launch right, what chance does some third rate gaming company have?
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
Well first off the op said the game is a fraud. It's definately not a fraud. As when the game was first mentioned on these very forums people said it was vaporware. While it was in caugh alpha stage it certainly was not vaporware. Now i have seen AAA games put out by major companies fail on launch,so this is not surprising to me in the least. I love the concept of this game and before launch it was running perfectly fine. Bow they are saying its over crowding of players and that very well maybe part of the problem but i think there is something else causing the lag issues and not the over crowding. Before the launch we had over 40 people in 1 zone and not a single bit of lag.
But when they said they were going with 2 servers the forums lit up with crying about how splitting the pop will ruin the game so he kept 1 server and now you see the crap that has resulted cause of it, if infact it is over crowding.
So i play something else while i wait for the lag to be fixed.

I have played this game, and to say its not finished is being kind. With that said this game has a great concept, and if they get where they are trying to go this game could become a real sleeper because what they are trying to do is not like anything anyone else is trying and I for one thank them for that. I do feel though they will end of having to go micro trasactions to really grow the game as its hard to sell the game in its current state when someone could play LOTRO, EQ2, or DDO for free which all are very polished finished games. I also think at some point they will need to do a graphics update. I for one though will try this game agian down the road as I like the fact that its not like every other mmo out there it really has its own feel. Is it for everyone no not at all, but I do think this game will make it just based on how different it is from all the rest. PS: Almost forgot add a damn compass Xsyon Dev's

I understand the OP's frustration, I gave the game a few days after launch to see how it was shaping up after reading about the lag and it really is aweful, never really experienced lag as bad as I have in xsyon. I love the game but every time I'm logging in I'm dissapointed as it takes a rediculous amount of time to perform the simplest of actions. I will cross my fingers for it to be fixed at within the next few days, but I won't hold my breath.
Personally I think it's time the developer got a few more experienced heads on board to help manage the workload and just help the game out in general as one man coding a whole game is no easy task, especially in mmo space. I think it's time Jordi realised this.

So if youre playing Rift and enjoying it, why take the time to post on a xsyon thread? If yer not playing the game (Xsyon) why should any one care what you think? As far as predictions, I predict youll be playing TOR , yet another hand held mmo, just like WoW and Rift, and probably on a PVE server to boot.
EDIT: I do belive I remember you saying you were playing Xsyon, but it would not hold yer interest.. Thanks for all youre valuable input Jovian....lol

This game offers things you just cant do in most MMO"s , and we "FTS" are having a great time, despite the lag issues. A bear ran through and killed half the tribe because of lag, and instead of getting pissed, we all laughed our asses off. It was damn funny!
That, and were all hard at work building our little fort, and having a great time doing it! We like the game, were having a blast playing together, and that's all that matters.
Money well spent.
Btw, when the lag settled down, the mommas cub ran through, and I killed it with a vengence.

Yeah, nothing beats losing in-game progress (that is, real life time) due to faulty game mechanics, crappy servers and incompetent coding. It's so damn fun and hilarious, really "money well spent".
Why can't more people think like this? We need more unfinished, amateurish MMOs on the market now - especially games that try to do something different from the themepark clones. Why would anyone want a next-gen sandbox game that actually works anyway? Let's stick to these half-assed, unfinsihed, broken games that people like to play because they have "potential" and nothing else! After all, WoW is bad, so anything that isn't WoW must be worth paying for, right?

Playing games for their potential is a terrible way to go about gaming. It seems so many do that in this genre though, always hoping the game will turn into something later.
I play Xsyon, but I play it for what the game is now. I hate the crashes, the rollbacks.. the LAA....AAG. But I do like the way the game plays when I'm not experiencing those things.
I like my neighbors in game too, nice group of people, I was lucky to not have a bunch of jerks settle around me. In some sense you're right Noobgren, by me paying and playing the game in its current state I am supporting unfinished games being released in some way. That wasn't my intention when I bought the game originally, but it is how it happened.
In truth I knew that the game wasn't compeltely finished when I bought it, but I also knew what was working and still made the decision myself, and I don't regret it. I'm not saying the game is the most fantastic game in the world, or basing my opinion off of what the game MAY become one day. I'm basing my enjoyment of the game off of what I'm playing *now*. (When I'm actually able to play ). For all those supporting this game based on its potential... all thats going to do is cause disappointment in the end. It will never reach someones perceived potential. Play the game for what it is, not what you're hoping it will be.
I'm not playing this game anymore I cancelled my subscription and decided to move on and it's mainly for the same reasons the OP gave.
I was willing to give it a shot at first and even wrote a review to that effect. The play just gets progressively worse as time goes by though and I don't see how they'd be able to fix it while still also trying to develop the game. I mean, they're trying to fix these game-breaking bugs while also develop the game and I don't see how they can be successful at both. What happens if/when they actually do get it fixed and try to update the game again?

Been playing for 7 hours now... No lag. Steady at 46 36 53.. lol We'll see..
While this game is very very flawed (not that i was expected much from an indie MMO), I am quite sick of people complaining so much about the lag. Where I am (in the mountains away from the lake) I get next to no lag. The lake is just one big mess of people. Too many people are living around it, causing issues over junkpiles and resources. This game world is huge but no one wants to spend the time exploring for a good spot.
Anyway I do hope the devs can fix the lag issues and I also hope the player base realises that there is a world outside of the lake.

Sounds like yer playing Solo, the ping were getting is great. Holding at 46.. (20-30 ) Of our guild and other people in the same area.. at the same time, and others around us.. I'm starting to think the problem may have been solved. Oh boy, if this stays as is, a lot of nay, sayers will be eating crow. Who am I kidding, AzHolz will be thinking up reasons to be .... Were having fun, go play Rift.

If people enjoy Xsyon in its current state, more power to them. I played the game myself for weeks before the pre-launch and enjoyed it; it's a pretty good game - when it works.
What I don't get is the bizarre attitude of some people: Xsyon is different from the generic themeparks, so if you complain about it having severe issues, you must like generic themeparks, right..? It's like "oh, so you don't like lag spikes, unannounced rollbacks, serverdowns and constant delays? Go play Rift then you pansy!"
I'm tired of people coming up with excuses for broken and unfinished games just because the games in question are different from the major titles. I've seen it in DF, MO, and now in Xsyon; people seem to suffer through endless problems just because the game is either "great when it works" or because it "will be great one day but we must support it" (i.e. the "potential" argument).
If people want to do that, fine. But please don't judge those who don't.

Now try playing with that low ping when there are more then 100 players logged ingame.
I pre-ordered right before the first day and although I loved the game, concept, features, etc. It was having some serious issues with performance. At that time I would not have said "go buy this game"...
After having time to work on it the Devs seem to really have a handle on things. Pretty amazing how much this small staff is accomplishing. Just wait till they have the resources they need to truly develop this game
I would say go buy Xsyon! I want more people in this amazing world that you can literally mold.

Karma.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Sounds like yer playing Solo, the ping were getting is great. Holding at 46.. (20-30 ) Of our guild and other people in the same area.. at the same time, and others around us.. I'm starting to think the problem may have been solved. Oh boy, if this stays as is, a lot of nay, sayers will be eating crow. Who am I kidding, AzHolz will be thinking up reasons to be .... Were having fun, go play Rift.
Edit.. sorry, grabbed the wrong guy.
The developers seem to be able to imprve the situation. The situation now is much better than a few days ago.
Yupp, agree. Since the last patch a day ago the game is pretty stable.
A miracle patch!
