As much as I would like to say it was the first Everquest, I am going with SWG before the nerfing. It truly had everything I wanted in a game. Great combat, housing, the lore of it, options for casual gamers, just a big list really.  I loved that you could play an entertainer , I mean, thats just saying "Come and roleplay with us!".  I loved the housing alot,  having a place to show off for me is like those pvp'ers having their glowing gear or huge raid mounts ( hehe ).  My wife agrees with me that it was also exciting to have a community that helped the economy (on our server it was great).. finding that super sweet spot to put down a harvester to get the best resources was an odd "thrill".  Being able to build your own city, make people mayors and such just put the icing on my cake.  This might seem odd to say, but ever since I left.. I've been looking for SWG again, wandering around aimlessly to other MMO's with a "why even bother" state of mind (though, I bothered on alot of MMO's haha)... I hope I find you soon my old friend...*looks out the rain soaked window into the unknown, wondering ..* :)

    SWG Pre-CU hands down!

    Then probably Evercrack, Lotro.

I never played EVE unfortunately. I also thought DDO was pretty cool but it was a crappy grind at first.

    I feel the same way

this question has been asked a lot on this board, in various ways , and my answer is still UO  ; )

I'd have to say Precu SWG for me.  It was the only game that ever inspired me to have two simultaneous accounts and dual box while rp'ing both characters at the same time.

I was an mmo junkie.  NGE was my intervention.  Smedley was like...you are an mmo crack ho.  I'm crapin' in your stash so every time you take a hit you are left with a bad taste.

    Pre-CU SWG ... RIP.

    UO.

Special mention to EVE which is a close second for me.

    SWG pre CU

That's my pick. Too bad SOE had to ruin it, it really was a GREAT game with so much for any player. Player built cities, housing ( multiple), superb crafting, space flight, story line, PvE and PvP, rather long learning curve (no easy I win button), outstanding combat, nice player customizing, long list of player classes that could be mixed, fine choices in Jedi abilities...all the Good, Bad and then  (of course) the Ugly.

When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute — and it’s longer than any hour. That’s relativity.

lol. To all of you who mentioned EVE online, here's a very funny fact...

I have the CD-ROM for it, but I've never played it yet. Why? Because I'm too scared to play a game where the the community has alot of power-hungry bastards who wants to destroy your ship and steal all your isks.

...Not that I won't become one of them soon. lol

    Intensity beats extensity everytime...

Just pretend they are NPCs . .... whats the big deal? Its just a game. NPC do not act as realistic as enemy players do though.

I have at least tried almost every mmo over the past 12 years my favoires where:

    1. EQ2

    2. WoW

    3. SWG

In that order, but thats just me everyone likes different things. Also I would like to add I am sure EQ would have been in there if I had ever played the orignal much, but when it first came out I was into a shooter, and then after that I got hooked on SWG for a 2 or 3 years.

Asheron's Call 1 is the best MMORPG ever made.

    1) DAoC - Hands down

    2) Horizons/SWG pre Cu/NGE

    3) EQ

I have so many ideals, so many things that would constitute different kinds of ‘best MMO’ that are mutually exclusive, so it might be impossible to name one.

But as evidenced by my signature, I would say EVE, Vanguard, and Age of Conan, in their own ways.

Asking which the best MMORPG is equals asking which the best food is. Sure, you can try to identify when something is burned and not useful anymore, but all in all it's just a matter of taste and differs from person to person.

If I'd have to choose one: even though I'm not subscribed to any MMORPG curerntly, I'd choose WoW. Not because I think it's perfect, but come on: it got nice humor, huge amounts of contents and replayability, lots of classes, professions, starting zones, races, good music and so on. It's still not good enough for me to subscribe to it currently, but all in all, I still think it's better than the others.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

the best mmorpg ever made is a goal to be followed, more important than to be a game itself.

good games are those who give a step foward for the genre, rather than follow a overdone formula.

    `NUFF SAID!

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

This is easy to answer for those of us that played it early on....

    PlanetSide....

It's still unique in scale and fun to this day although it doesn't produce the absolutely HUGE 1200+ player battles it once did...

interesting to see how many "sandbox" and/or PvP focused games get a nod in this discussion.....

    so far at least.

TBH I have to go with WoW.

I have never gotten over Vanilla WoW's AV BG

and Vanilla WoW's World Dungeons as I call it (Stromgrad, Hinterlands Troll)

Asheron's Call was great overall, but Guild Wars has run a good tie to that to me.  City of Heroes and Villians is pretty darn awesome...  All of which has sucked the most life out me.  Each being games i'ved devoted multiple years to, so far.

Guess I'd have to say Guild Wars has been my all time favorite aside from Asheron's Call... If i could combine the skill based system and the salvaging/augmenting system of AC with the strategy, Hero system and awesome storylines and scenematics and the pvp systems of GW i'd have the perfect game.

UO (pre-UO:R) was the best, heads and shoulders above the rest.

Planetside was my second (until the so-called balancepass).
