The MMO i normally play ffxi has been down ever since the tsunami and nuclear reactor went boom in japan

so i figured i'd give this game a shot.. sounds interesting.. and I haven't played a fpsmmo since planetside

Started download and game says it will take 5 hours and 30 mins to download.. heres to  hoping its including all the updates..

or at least its not retarded like ffxi.. which has 10+ hour updates lol

Lets hope people still play this game.. would hate to waste all this time downloading it to find empty servers ^^

    thank you!!

Well RMT still care enough to camp the game obviously so thats a positive sign.. i guess lol

RMT have just about given up on ffxi

not that i'd bother buying rmt stuff... I'm not against the idea of paying for services in games.. but it sort of ruins the enjoyment...

I have purchased stuff before and it didn't make me enjoy the game more

Well download went ok.. no huge update

game took about 5 minutes to update files after i finished the download..

Appears there are 3 active servers on the game

I created a character and tried the tutorial.. ill let you know more later.. can't play atm ^^

Well made it to lvl 8 so far

Npc's in town aren't the most helpful

They all offer services but nobody explains how to use the services.. or how much they cost

an example would be "Process ore" >> you don't have enough money.. but it doesn't say anywhere how much it would cost

Leveling seems fairly straightforward.. things die extremely quickly.. there doesn't seem to be any benefit from levels however other than opening up new quests (which consist of kill 20 rabbits or slay 3 bacon mages)..

Most of the benefits come from leveling up the skills / magic (forces)

I really don't like the loot system..

after you kill something a bunch of identical looking tiny boxes drop to the ground.. usually 3~5 and can build up extremely fast

You also don't have a very large inventory

Its difficult to select specific items to pick up while leaving less valuable / worthless junk items on the ground

and certain items give you an ingame error when you try to pick them up

Thats the other issue i have.. some gems have 0 gold value... but there is no explanation of how to craft/synth items and i couldn't find much in the way of community sites

I'll give the game a bit more.. the exploration / quest aspect of the game are so far extremely lacking

but i doubt people play the game for that anyways.. the grind doesn't seem horrible as of yet so ill see if i can't reach a halfway decent level and do some pvp

PVP is the make or break aspect of the game and ill have to see

  • RedempRedemp Member UncommonPosts: 1,136

One phrase kills the PvP in this game :  Potion spamming.

One more phrase to solidify the extent at which the joke, that is pvp lives up to in this game :  Zerg fights.

I had the misfortune of playing this abortion at launch, it amazes me that its still alive.

  • jado818jado818 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 356

Yah its not looking too promising.. but i figured i'd try it out a bit more before i shelved it..

wouldn't be fair to give a bad "review" if you will... w/o even trying the pvp

edit.. and i'm not sure why.. this game is rated 7 + on this mmo site here lol.. how are these ratings even formulated?

  • jado818jado818 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 356

Well i've just about given up on this game.. i might try it again later if im super bored but its not worth playing

The game is in dire need of a spell check / grammar check.... it's almost comical at times.. like watching a bad kung fu movie

like the quest npc complaining about the dete jammer (*data jammer*) not to mention some of the obvious grammatical errors.

but the spelling errors weren't the biggest draw back for me...

I can understand companies making a mmo easier for new people to get into.. by say

    *lowering exp requirments

*giving new players potions or healing items

    *or better starting equipment

but in RF online they went to a damn near extreme.....

The weapons they start you off with are damn near as powerful as max level weapons ive seen in the weapon shop

You can one shot anything.. on any job.. it's like playing a mmo with cheat codes on

    The combination of

    **poorly implemented quest line..

    **extreme lack of difficulty....

**and troublesome loot system (think diablo 2 except everything looks the same)

make the game not worth recommending to anyone

It's a shame i never tried the pvp.. but i can just imagine how it would work.. everybody carrying around loads of potions and it would pretty much come down to lag.. and who has the most potions

To sum it up.. its an MMO without a soul

3 out of 10 (buggy but playable, and not very entertaining)

Afew things you need to know, and soem things youre wrong about:

The starter weapons they give you now were not always part of the game, it ran for years without them. The severs used to be run by Codemasters for quite awhile, then about 2-3 years ago CCR took their license away and the servers went down. The current version of the game youre on is the new servers run by CCR themselves, along with a bit of new content, higher level cap, etc from the old CodeMasters servers. Now, even on the old servers, it took a couple of years for anyone to hit that old level cap. With an increased level cap, it was going to take even longer to grind, so they added in these weapons to help you get through the earlier levels because TBH the game doesnt REALLY begin until about 45-50+. Thats when the good PvP starts, and this game is ALL about PvP. If you think the game is too easy, you havent gotten past 45, and even worse 50 and 55. The servers have been up for about 2 years now IIRC and still nobody has hit level cap, it takes several months to gain a level at 55+.

The starter weapons are also nowhere enar as stronga s the end game weapons. For , the start weapons cannot be upgraded. Normal weapons however can be upgraded to get IIRC 250% damage boost. And the weapons listed in the shops are very very far from the strongest. People grind & farm for months sometimes to get some of the better weapons, and then its even worse trying to upgrade them. Basically, if you took that starter weapon you have and tried to go kill a level 50 with it, it would never ever ever happen unless they ran out of HP pots. If you took a level 50 weapon and upgrade dit to +5/6, its capable of 1-2 shotting most anything besides a tank.

As for the potions. They seem awesome now, but at later levels youve got people with 40k+ HP, getting hit by some skills for 10-20k per hit (sometimes more), and the best potions possible only heal for 5k. Yes potions help you stay alive, but only against someone who is pretty equal to you. They wont do a damn thing to save you from many of the higher players or certain classes. There are also certain classes with skills and/or weapons focused on critting the enmy. Crit = stun = potions stop working too. In PvP youll run into quite a few low damage high crit builds, meant specifically to shut people down and stop them from moving & using potions. Also on the PvE side, at higher levels youre going to end up having to grind for a loooong looong time on mobs that can easily 1-2 shot anybody but a tank, no matte rhow many potions you have. Eventually a tank will become an absolute requirement for any XP party, because some types of tanks get things like 50% mor ehealing from potions on top of the vast difference in damage a tank tanks vs anyone else. For example, most of the higher PitBosses will 1 shot entire groups of people with AoEs, and a tank can BARELY survive them except for the very best geared tanks, and even they get their asses kicked sometimes.

The PvP is actually pretty awesome, its why ive played the game on and off for several years and became an Archon and RL when i was active. Nothing like being one of the top players in the game and just wrecking dozens of players in your way and laughing as their entire force scrambles to bring you down before you can wipe every single one of them out. The main focus of the PvP is the Chip Wars, which you can start attending at 25+, but really youre pretty useless until 45+ (probably 50+ now). The objective isnt to simply kill the enemies, but to destroy their Control Center, retrieve the item from the CC and deliver it to the cente rof the mines. Winning the war gets your race the ability to mine for ores, which are very very important for getting things like Talics (upgrading materials).

I've been a massive RF online player over the years, and what you say is kinda laughable from anyone thats played more than the first....30 levels. The starter weapons were there to get u to lvl to 40 quickly as 40-55 is really really really really slow, and before the starter weapons it was slow from 30. The offical servers aren't that great I admit, and the worldwide servers are miles behind the korean ones, unforunatly, but the main reason for the game is the pvp.

The pvp is THE reason to play the game, the mas battle of 3 factions fighting it out over the use of the mine at Chip Wars is epic and I've not yet played a game where a full faction vs faction vs faction is lead by people that you voted to lead the battle. Then there is massive pvp anywhere zones(all but the home bases) which make you edgy and makes leveling a little more risky. Everyone has a bag full of 5k pots in pvp, as the pots are in a macro system to give u health after a certain amount of health is lost(which you set) but pvp isn't about who runs out first, its more about the gear and skill of the player to be able to stun the pots, beat the pots in damage via having amazingly upgraded weapons or the enemy having bad armour, or down to the team effort to focus fire and attack at the same time so only one pot works in the time it takes you to down the guy(as the pots have a 2.5second cooldown if i remember correct).

RF Online is also one of the most group orrientated mmos out there, because if you don't group it will take months of grinding to level. Unfortunatly that is the biggest downside to the game, being Korean it is a massive grindfest, there are quests, well one quest per level and then some string quests but most are to kill a certain mob x amount of time to give u a little amount of exp, and grinding for 75% of the level becomes the norm.

There are some great things with the game, and given some loving it could be, imo, one of the best mmos ever, but the servers are riddled with hackers, poorly patched, buggy like you say, but at its core its a great game. Lower the grind, add quests that mean something, add things to do apart from the CWs at max level, add GMs to ban hackers, make it more seure and patch the game with updates as often as Korea does at least and lower the usefullness of the cash shop, then the game will be near perfect.

Hehe, yeah some of the things you pointed out, like the cash shop and terrible GMs/support are why i left the official servers. Asylum is an aswesome private server though, great GMs, cash/donation shop that is actually pretty well balanced with whats in the game, reasonable prices, AND several ways to earn points through doing things ingame, and stuff like Vouchers for instant upgrades to your gear. I was actually going to be a GM on Asylum myself because it was such a blast and so many great people on there, but unfortunately didnt work out right with my schedule at my normal job. While i wa sthere though i managed to (within 2 weeks of joining the server) become the ACC RL, then due to massive fail on the ACC side (horrible players, nobody working together, everyone lazy and wants stuff for free) i rerolled Cora and along with my brother became (along with our RL who was Marksman like us) the most feared players on the server in our steady Strike Team & Supporter spots.

you could not be more off m8

Yes i will give you the grammer check thing and that npc's are quite useless. the questline is pretty much nonexistant but thats not what the game is about.

about the ore stuff. u need to have actually ore to process it and it costs about a million and a half i think.

the starter weapons you get are not meant to be powerfull they are meant to help you at a higher lvl. as you could see getting exp is fairly easy getting PT however is not. and if your a specialist class you want to max out all your skills. The weapons help you so that you can still get pt when your at a higher lvl (you cant get pt from mobs you dont get exp from and you cant wear high lvl weapons without having a certain amount of PT so if your not where your supposed to be your stuck, these weapons will make it possible to PT)

Also the weapons strenght are the equivalant of normal lvl 40-45 weapons. High lvl players are walking around with intense (wich is basicly the same strenght as the next weapon (so a intense lvl 45 sword has the same power as a lvl 50 normal sword) and people upgrade them in the process making them very strong. you cant buy upgraded weapons trough cash shop so actually those weapons are quite weak.

you one shot anythign because your walking around with lvl 45 weapons:P Try using the normal weapons instead of the starter weapons and keep those starter weapons for when you at a high lvl and need to get pt's wich are hard to get with your regular weapons.

lack of difficulty well yeah the game revolves around PvP and your potions will keep you alive unless you attack something wich really hurts you.

you think the potion system might suck but it really doesn,t  people outdamage what your potions can heal. At high lvls my lvl 49 driver gets oneshotted by lvl 55+'s anything under that my potions will keep me alive as long as i keep running.  Cant comment on fighting someone on an equal lvl Im a Driver i dont really use potions much.

And pvp to describe it. Accretians have incredible amounts of armor and are very hard to kill. Cora's have pets wich give them alot of extra damage or heals depending on pet.  And us Bellato's we have Mech's wich depending on what lvl you are at and what kind of outfitting you have. as a ranged mech you can hurt pretty bad. as a melee mech your basicly netting the enemy keeping them in place.

The chipwar (racial war between all 3 races) is alot about teamwork nuking targets after one another debuffing them netting them so they cant run. Solo killing people is something the top players can do. The lower lvl players can ofcourse solokill people lower then they are (i seem to be a juicy targets for lvl 55's specially because im a driver)

but well to sum things up you could not be more wrong.

I'm no stranger to mmo grinds....

but the one thing about most grinds in games is it has some aspect that keeps you entertained..

RF online lacks anysort of entertainment value for the grind...

why would a a person invest hours upon hours into a grind that is less entertaining than normal exp grinds in games..

when there is no guarantee the pvp/endgame is decent.

I'm not trying to flame the game... just give my impressions of the first few levels.. i made it to about lvl 25 and i gotta say it was a challenge to maintain interest that far.

did you try to get involved with the community?

have you try to go to chipwar? (yes i know that you have nothing to do there and the chipguards will oneshot you) but you can still get the vibe of what is going on and the intensity behind a good chipwatr.

grouping becomes mandatory at about lvl 35 so your not quite anywhere yet at lvl 25.

its a shame but rf online at playrf.com just needs more people i geus. RF online can actually be pretty good once your getting into it. Remember PvP is the main focus of that game.

Yeah if youre new to the game its tougher to understand, but all of us who have posted here have experience with the game, and we can all tell you that basically the incentive to keep grinding in PvE is to PvP.  We know the PvE & grind sucks, but weve suffered through it for years because of the PvP.

Definitely would be nice if they improved the PvE aspect, but sadly the staff on the official servers kind of blows. Several private servers have done a better job of adding fun & new PvE content to their versions of the game than CCR has. But wether you stay on CCR or go to a private server, the PvP is great fun either way.

Just keep in mind too, on the official CCR servers, youre looking at needing to spend a LOT of $ or get EXTREMELY lucky to be one of the better PvPers. Myself and many others ive played RF with ove rthe years have invested thousands into the game, but due to the gamble system of upgrader boxes, some only spend a little bit to get very powerful upgrades, while others keep constantly spending money and getting nothing but useless crap from the upgrader boxes.

On the othe rhand, if you try out a private server theres 3 main differences:

    1) Leveling is usually extemely easy compared to the official servers. Most of them you can hit level cap in a few days-weeks depending on the exact servers vs literally years trying to reach cap on CCR. This is because for the most part the private servers are dedicated to having great PvP. They dont put retarded grinds on you in order to start PvPing, they make it nice & fast so everyone can get to cap and start PvPing much quicker.

    2) Some of the private servers, such as Asylum which i used to play, also have higher level caps (Asylum was 100), lots of custom gear for their server, custom Animus, custom MAUs, custom Mobs, etc. The GMs are also much mroe active thanon CCR which leads to much better banning of cheaters, support for problems, listening to suggestions/ideas for new things, and tons more ingame events with special rewards like team PvP tournaments, different types of race vs race events in different zones, etc

    3) CCR cash shop is a complete gamble, you can go buy 100 boxes (at close to $25 per upgrader box) and still get 0 useful upgraders (they give random types for different weapon grades as wella s a random number of + upgrades, its like a 5% chance to get a good upgrader for an Intense weapon). Private server cash shops are usually pay X $ or earn X points (ingame, voting on the site, etc) and you get a guaranteed weapon, armor, accessory, upgrade, etc.

Anyway, TBH, if youre already not liking the grind and want to get to PvPing quicker to see what its like, your eprobably better off just finding a good private server to check out and see what the PvP & Chip Wars are like. If nothing else, you can at least get a good look at the end game and if you like it, head back to the CCR servers to keep playing toward sthe endgame there. Private servers will be a much quicker & easier way to get some action and see why some of us love the game after all these years despite its age & its several major problems.

    kaiser.

im downloading asylum atm gonna check it out i gues. just to see how the population is going.

i have a question tho. right now the figures on the site give this:

    World: Online

    Login: Online

    Accretia:

    52%

    Bellato:

    25%

    Cora:

    21%

is this acurate to what is playing most of the time? Acc always seems the most popular and have that unfair advantage with the high armor they carry.
