One of the best mods for oblivion. If you never played the game with this mod, you are doing yourself a disservice. It pretty much eradicates level scaling and it boosts the difficulty quite a bit.
I really enjoyed Oblivion and the leveling. But there are so many great games out now and coming out till Skyrim that I don't know if I'd recommend going through it at this point. It was one of my favorite games, but you don't need to play it for Skyrim. I do expect more out of Skyrim, as Oblivion had some irritating features. For example, at one point with gear and stats I was able to run like 90mph with my guy and jump over buildings in a single bound.
With all the adventure mods out there, not to mention different races, armor, weapons, etc, I have not found an end in site.
I use a mod called Francescos leveled creatures and items mod. At the time I didn't like Oscuro's as I felt it made too many changes. I found things such as my starting spells being useless or I coudn't pick a lock even though the creatures that would attack me were locked behind a door, etc. and it just was too pervasive for my tastes. Still, it's a very good overhaul mod.
There are also mods to stop fast travel (though this was always silly to me, just "don't fast travel") except between cities and mods that remove the markers you see on the compass that indicate you are closing in on a ruin or tower or "whatever". Darnified UI has this though I found I have to constantly reset it every time I start the game.
In any case I think it's an excellent game. Morrowind was a better game but there are things that I really enjoy about Oblvion such as the more action oriented combat.
In any case "yes" it's worth playing.

Oblivion + Playing a Caster (if you like Casters) + Midas Magic Mod = Fun as hell. I was always more of a melee then magic fan in Oblivion. Then I got Midas Magic, and have to say being a caster is actually fun. Even though alot of the spells are dangerous, and I find myself killing myself alot if I'm not careful (sort of like that Magicka game on Steam). But like what Sovrath said, there are so many mods out there. That there is absolutely no reason not to play Oblivion. Makes a great fall back game when servers are down, or you just feel like taking a step back from your MMO choice for a day.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.

Sorry for offtopic, but Sovrath you can change the Darnified UI permanently by altering its config files in notepad. They are usually located at OblivionDatamenusprefabsdarn. Full instructioins found here: http://darnified.net/forums/articles/configuring_ui_33.0.html
PS I agree with your comments about OOO...but I still use it anyway!
Oblivion is only worth installing if you intend to install Nehrim. It's not a simple mod; it's basically a whole new game running on Oblivion's engine. The world is hand crafted instead of generated by a program (which is why Cyrodiil is such an uninteresting and bland looking place), combat is slightly better and the leveling system has been revamped. It's just a more tolerable game all around. Highly recommended.
It's much better with an overhaul mod. When I used to play it I always had "OOO" installed (at least I think it was called like that). It did away with the scaling and added multiple, much harder dungeons and foes with suitable rewards. This made the game much, much more enjoyable and realistic.
It's "Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul."
I also used Mart's Mutant Mod alongside it.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Oblivion.. theres always a good reason to play it.. its the only single player game i have.. that has replayability, the combat system may be a bit iffy.. but the magic system is my favourite... so my favourite combination of skills usually involves stealth and magic.. and being an Assassin.. imo Oblivion is right up there with Deux Ex (the first one!) as an all time classic.
So ive bought the game. What's the best spot to download oblivion mods? Namely looking for a change character appearance mod at the moment.

I am a diehard Morrowind fan and I really liked Oblivion as well. I never actually had any problems with the level scaling. It is an amazing game so go pick it up. Of course, you are better off playing the PC version. PC versions are always superior to their console equivalents.
IF you haven't tried Morrowind, pick that. The graphics are very good even by today's standards.

Skyrim has got me excited and itching to play Oblivion. I played the first hour or so when it came out but didn't stick with it. All I read about it the level scaling and it seems like it would be a total game breaker. I imagine advancing would seem pointless?
Thoughts? I would most likely be playing on ps3 so modding is not an option.
Thanks : )
Don't try play oblivion without obscuro oblivion overhaul also known as ( OOO mod) It adresses alot of the scalling lvl opponents, also adds more ntense fighting if u have the tendacy in raising the difficulty sliding bar. There is also Mortigen mod with along with OOO are the best vanilla oblivion's overhauls mods.
Personally i play oblivion with OOO (along with many other mods implied as well that add extra content ,more weapon possible drops in loot tables lists) and difficulty set to 55 and most battles are quite intense.
I liked morrorwind more due to more adventuring, lost walkign in the mountains, loads of caves ,underground dungeons exploration/adventuring, but sadly oblivin's combat is more active and better . tried to recently to play morrorwind again but combat was too outdated
is it worthy now to play oblivion? well ofc without any doubt..great game deep story, loads of side quests, lots of exploration too (less thna morrorwind but still alot things to discover outthere, tombs, caves etc etc..
Only thing though i didnt liked in oblivion is that inside vampire lairs u hear vampires talking to eachother about the weather and other stuff which is ridiculous.. I liked much more the vampires of morrorwind that were lot more scary howling when attacking u and extra fast etc etc

Though I would definitley put in my vote for Francesco's as it isn't as pervasive as OOO.
I agree with you regarding Morrowind. It had more of a "hey I'm lost and what the heck is that over there I'm going to see and hopefully not get my head bitten off" feel.
I agree with you about vampires standing around talking about the weather. I have to say that was a cutting corners method of dealing with their npc's.

Ok problem. Just started playing and have been running on high settings with no problem. I opened the terminal and did ChangeRaceMenu or whatever to change my appearance. Ever since I have been stuttering even running on medium settings. Whats going on?!

Honestly, I didn't really find the game that appealing without mods. It has a lot of depth, but as a game, I think I'd much rather play Morrowind. The graphics are worse, but I can tolerate the character models a bit more there, I suppose.

Well, that's never happened to me and I fool around with "showracemenu" all the time.
What happens if you try a new character? Also, and I'm not sure if this could affect it but are you using vista or windows 7 and do you have it installed in the default location?
I ask because I was having huge problems with oblivion when the game was in the default location. I then started movign all my games to a folder I created called "games" and ceased having problems.
It had something to do with how I could make changes to the game such as using the oblivion mod manager.
If you are playing and it's installed in the default location of "program files x 86" try making a "games folder" on the hard drive (and not in that x86 folder ) and see if it changes things.

I found that with Morrowind the best fix is upgrading the textures. There are a few other upgrades that shapren everything and let you see "forever" but it really ruins the game.
All morrowind needs is upgraded textures and you can find those on several websites. You can also update the character faces with a few mods.
