ATM this game is nothing more than a building simulation. There really is not any PvE or PvP worth anything to be honest, because there is so much unfinished, left out and place held in code.
You gather materials and you build things. Then when your done, you look at them. Nothing really has a purpose.
This game lacks, it's not really a video game because there is no "game".
We are all waiting for Xsyon to finish it, because conceptionally, this game could be awesome. But that could take a long time, and he keeps changing direction, trying to please everyone by promising everything.

Folks all this game needs is more content just like every other MMO out there. Whether it's new skills, new land, or seige warfare - it just needs content.
We're on a small homestead and are loving it - no we don't want to play a solo game - will we run out of stuff to do? Sure, but have enough to do at the moment to keep us busy.

It needs a hell of a lot more than content. Combat isn't fully implemented. That's the most basic system in any MMO.
Yeah, this is my big issue with Xyson. I want the MMO's I play to have fully developed combat systems, both PVE and PVP, and its apparant Xyson didn't have the resources to do it so they focused on gathering, crafting, city building. All great fun for those who enjoy such mechanics, but not for me.
I enjoyed EVE right from the start (which was about 3 years after it launched btw) as I found a fully developed universe with a great combat model (heck, I love mission running which many people eschew), PVP excitement, exploration and a host of other things.
Xyson doesn't have a lot of this right now, one day it might, but I can't see it gaining enough traction to actually pull it off. Even those who enjoy this sort of game are starting to complain of a lack of something to do, which does not bode well for the game's long term future.

Just to be fair to the game, many people that complain now are the people that joined the game recently thinking about Xsyon as something like Darkfall or Shadowbane 2.0. Xsyon is not, and I'm happy that it isn't.
I'm fully aware that this is a broad generalisation and as such partly wrong, but many of the complainers are the people that thought they get just another FFA PvP fragfest, macro-ed their characters to the top of the heap and now discover that Xsyon is much more a virtual world than a wargame.

Considering there are barely any combat mechanics and absolutely no wargame mechanics in the game so far, saying it's much more of a virtual world isn't saying much.
Like the OP, I joined a tribe. Everyone had everything. No one needed anything. There really wasn't any niche for me to fill. On top of that, everyone in that area either joined the tribe or was simply PK'd till they moved away or left the game. There was absolutely no goal left to work toward other than run around PKing people who wouldn't join.
The game itself has a lot of neat features, but it really needs to decide what it wants to be. It seems like it could do well both as a PVE game with optional PVP (duels, guild wars, tournaments) and as an FFA PVP game with territorial control. Right now it's neither and the hodgepodge that it is lends itself to either fun solitude for a while or zergarrific PKing until all the little guys have been run off.
I predict Xsyon will befall the same fate as Shadowbane's Treachery server - massive zerg forms, all the little guys cancel, zerg gets bored and cancels.

I've been playing every day since launch. I was attacked on launch day at the moment I entered the game but not since then. I haven't seen any PKer in my zone for 2 weeks now. So I guess the experience depends on where you are settled....if you have good/neutral neighbours you won't have any problem.
I'm sure the game won't turn into a zerg-fest nor a gankfest. Alignment system is switched off, when they turn it on we will see even less PKing. The devs are against ganking/griefing, thats why PKing is pointless now...you can kill players but you can't loot them. They leave it as it is now till they implement PK penalties.
I agree with Larsa. The 95% of the complainers are players who hoped to find Darkfall 2.0, and they are irritated now because the safe zones will remain in game. This is their major complaint, they want the safe zones to be removed and since it was announced that those will stay in game they are frustrated.
I hope they will start 2 servers soon...1 for PvE/moderate PvP and one without safe zones. Everyone gets what they want, everyone is happy.
Any skill-based game that lets anyone do anything is destined for failure. Now you've gotten a taste of why.
Let's take a concept from UO and use it... only lets get rid of that pesky little limited skill cap and make a huge cap instead!
I know there are skills they have yet to implement and there's some sort of soft cap on the skills. For now though, there are only a few major skills anyone takes and those can easily be capped (nearly). Welcome to Cookie Cutter Land, population... everyone!
That's Xsyon's problem as well as Darkfall and Mortal Online. They just don't "get it". Boundaries are needed; limitations are essential. In real life I can't go through 8 years of Med school to be a doctor, be a professional musician and a Marine Biologist. There just isn't enough time in the day.
Lerxst have you played Mortal Online or Xsyon? I will not dispute what Darkfall currently is. The developers (AV) have at least acknowledged this and trying to to do something about with prestige armors, crafting changes etc. But there are no "cookie cutter" specs in Xsyon currently. The game has literally been out less than a month, and some of that time it was not 100% playable. No one is coming coming close to capping skills or stats. People are building their tribes/homesteads up, dealing with the supbar combat system, and trying to look at things positvely. There are skill caps/decay and there are stat caps/decay.
As far as Mortal Online, there is a cap of points you may allocate/use. It is not like Darkfall where everyone can do everything if they so choose.

You said you haven't seen any PKs since they turned off corpse looting. Have any idea why they turned off corpse looting, Sinella?
Or are you suggesting that the current lack of looting is a permnent change? If not, then what makes you think the PKs won't resume their activites once looting is turned back on?

Not sure, but there are quite a few "pkers" near my tribe. The amount of pking near me has only slowed down due to less players on lately, as some were fed up with the lag (even though it is much better now, and the patch yesterday fixed many people's fps). Most people near me just kill because it's fun, or they feel like it I suppose. Loot is always nice, but it's not necessary.

Yes, I played it for a while in fact. There's only one feasible build in the game. If you doubt it, you can always spec in the PvP aspect which is a mess, or go for one of the voids like Animal Taming... or mayby try religion on for size. The only thing you can do is craft like everyone else does and if you do that, you're going to need Toolcrafting. Unless you want to spend weeks finding a saw blade, better go with Architecture or logging and again, if you don't want want to spend days finding a spade head, take Terraforming. There's your build - it's the same one everyone else who played the game for a couple weeks prior to launch already figured out.
The point is, any time there's a skill system, regardless of caps, everyone will pick and choose the select few skills that just "work" for the game. Picking different ones is like swimming against the current for the entire time you play the game... which will be short-lived considering you intentionally shot yourself in the foot right from the start.
Even UO had caps, but they placed them so low that people were forced to juggle all the time; there was never just one you could stick with unless you were a die-hard crafter.

I don't even know what to say man, I have had a completely different experience with Xsyon in my time playing and I respectfully disagree with everything you just said. I am in a tribe where everyone works together and we all have different skills. Yes I do doubt it, but then again I don't look at everything as so black and white. Playing the game and having fun is not always about having the "best" or "fotm" spec.
Also, you cannot pick the skill swimming and you are not able to level up animal training. Play the game some more, learn a bit more about it, you may find you like it more. Find some people to play with, so you can focus on what you want to do in game, not what you feel you have to do.
There are just different ways to play Xsyon, you can play it as a virtual world or you can play it as a game that you want to win.
If you play it as a virtual world the game is good, even in it's current state. You see, where you need to run to a crafter 3 zones away with your precious trade items to get yourself a new tool. And while you go there you might find a rare resource, you might get attacked by another player or a wild animal. That's the right mindset for Xsyon. And while you go there you even increase your running skill.
The other player is someone who wants to "win" Xsyon at all costs. He starts by running against a wall for hours on end to get "better" at running. Then he spams his jump key for a couple of days to get "better" at jumping. Then he does the same for hiding, swimming or one of the other skills. Poor guy, he has completely missed the point of the game.

I don't quite understand. You want boundaries and limitations, but huge ones not pesky limited ones. If you can do almost everything, that is not much different from being able to do everything.
Also, if you look back to the OP, the original complaint is about the fact that fairly soon in the growth of a tribe, someone will have done everything necessary, making most effort from that point on kind of useless. A skill cap will do nothing about that.
P.S. Mortal Online has a pretty restrictive skill cap.
I've been playing every day since launch. I was attacked on launch day at the moment I entered the game but not since then. I haven't seen any PKer in my zone for 2 weeks now. They didn't turn it off. They left a bug in game intentionally till they implement PK penalties. I guess this is not a permanent change, but PKing will be even less due to the strict consequences.
You can PK now without any consequences but without any gain. Later there will be gain but there will be severe consequences.

I'm not sure if you're being obtuse or just changing your story as you go, but it was certainly an entertaining conversation. I'm looking forward to revisiting this discussion in May. By then that pesky bug should be fixed and these new PK penalties should be in,

yea well that's what happens when games are too much like RL. they become completely boring.....just like RL.
lest face it, if RL wasn't boring we wouldn't even think of playing vidoe games.
Well you DO have a point there..BUT Xsyon is nowhere near as being described as a RL sim. I mean its lore is totally bogus.Have you ever imagined that earth after apocalypse would become so green and clean with tidy set piles of junk being finely seperated by blue streams of pure forest water? lol
Originally posted by pupurun Have you ever imagined that earth after apocalypse would become so green and clean with tidy set piles of junk being finely seperated by blue streams of pure forest water? lol
Maybe the game takes place a few decades after the disaster, and during that time supernatural forces of nature have ground up the ruins, turning them into the junk piles we see.
what? a game that's just like real life is boring? no...really? you mean you aren't having fun chopping trees for 5 hours?
seriously though, i've watched you guys complain about how there aren't any good sandbox games for years, now a sandbox game releases with all those great ideas you all loved so much....and you're bored already.....

/facepalm
This is not the issue here. Real life sandboxes can be great in theory . Xsyon's ideas sounded great but the idea itself is never enough. You have to create a functioning interactive world based on that idea and try to predict the most common route an average player will take.If you do that , then you can close the "gaps" and put the boundaries you need to preserve balance. In adittion, you must listen to your community and have the willand power to go with the flow. And all of the above need lots of money, hands and minds that Notorious Games don't have(yet).
If Xsyon fails this won't be the end of RL Sandboxes.Seeing the enourmous (according to the company's size) interest Xsyon had from the global mmo community, I believe it might push some mainstream companies to invest on such ideas with the main difference of fully implementing all features from the start and mainly creating the technical backround to support them.

By then that pesky bug should be fixed and these new PK penalties should be in,
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

to OP:
LMAO!
yea well that's what happens when games are too much like RL. they become completely boring.....just like RL.
lest face it, if RL wasn't boring we wouldn't even think of playing vidoe games.
Well you DO have a point there..BUT Xsyon is nowhere near as being described as a RL sim. I mean its lore is totally bogus.Have you ever imagined that earth after apocalypse would become so green and clean with tidy set piles of junk being finely seperated by blue streams of pure forest water? lol
Maybe the game takes place a few decades after the disaster, and during that time supernatural forces of nature have ground up the ruins, turning them into the junk piles we see.
I wish I could read more of the real lore though.
what? a game that's just like real life is boring? no...really? you mean you aren't having fun chopping trees for 5 hours?
seriously though, i've watched you guys complain about how there aren't any good sandbox games for years, now a sandbox game releases with all those great ideas you all loved so much....and you're bored already.....
/facepalm
he beat me too it. =/
