On The Fence w/ Purchase

seraphis79seraphis79 Member UncommonPosts: 312

I was accepted to the beta but never had the opportunity to take advantage of it.  I have just come across it again and I'm debating on making the purchase.  However, I got burnt by Mortal Online and I get the feeling I may end up getting burnt with this one as well.

My questions are:

1. How does this compare to Mortal Online?  Stability and PvP aspects.

2. How does this compare to Darkfall?  Grinding apsect.

2. How populated is the server?

3. Hindsight being what it is, would you purchase the game again after having played it.

I love the idea of having to do everything and being able to shape the world and it's a big selling point for me.  The PvP not so much but I can handle some PvP.

I bought the client a year ago last month for an April 2010 pre-launch.  Guess what. . .month after month in delays, no meaningful development, and the developers continued to trip over themselves for a year.

Do not buy-into anthing about this game until you begin to hear feedback about it over aprolonged period of time.  The feedback I have been reading is that you have construction, and sim-build like actions like you were a mason, but the system is still grossly incomplete.

Let alone, there is absolutely no purpose, meaning or mechanisms for intelligent economy building, governance, pvp or pve, which makes doing all of the above a meaningless endeavor.

The game-play mechanics on paper look great, but fail to deliver into anything tangible but rudimentary building/crafting rather than anything indepth or purposeful.   I'd like to hear more about this game as it comes out, but it appears the Xsyon devs are still looking for people to fund their experiment.

While much of this is true, I'll address this and answer your question.

In my limited time playing MO,  I can say that the combat is better, in MO... however the stability is much better in Xsyon.

Compared to DF, the grind on most skills is nonexistent.

There isn't much of an economy, or PvP... this is primarily a crafting game at this time.   You'll find yourself trading with neighbors... and working very hard (if you're solo) to build something.  If you're lucky, you find a very SMALL group of players to join, where you'll be appreciated and work towards building up and out.

Apart from the construction, as stated above, theres not much else to do.  Yes you'll see some animals that you can PvE.. and yes, there will be some PvP (though, its really bad.  Sometimes you'll die by 3 hit kills, sometimes you'll swing away and never know if you're hitting the guy or being hit BY him... hit detection is bad. Really bad.)

All in all though,  people log in day after day to complete their goals of building, helping others build.. and every now and then, they'll get a posse together to kill a griefer or two, or protect a junk pile.

To answer the last 2 questions though...

The server may be very populated but you can only talk to the people 1 space away from your current zone.. and if you are in a zone a couple spaces inland from the lake, you won't hear much from anyone.  If you're in a highly populated area by a starting zone,  it will be very active and crowded.  Not really indicative of the population though.

I am happy I bought the game.  The time I've spent playing has been really great.  I love the construction aspects and the exploration, even if it only ever truly yeilds me a few bones from a bear or deer.  The real saving grace here is,  the community.  You have some less than desirables, but I've met some fantastic people from all over the world, and I'm happy to get on.. chill out in their homesteads, and just talk about whatever,  maybe share some fish, of help them make some bricks to build a wall.

Yes, I would purchase the game again. Even if the servers would close tomorrow (and they won't) I would say I already got my fair entertainment value for the $40 I paid, more than that even. For me the game also offers fair value for the monthly subscription.

In my opinion, it's pretty easy to predict if someone will like the game. Just take the http://www.gamerdna.com/quizzes/bartle-test-of-gamer-psychology and if the result is that you're primarily an explorer or socialiser then you will like Xsyon, if the result is that you're primarily an achiever you will not like Xsyon. Killers may be in-between but tend to not-like Xsyon.

    :)

I bought it... and now I wish I never had.  My advice is, wait wait wait, for a trial at the very least.  It's not worth it.  I too have played MO, hated it, and Darkfall, while not my favorite due to full loot pvp, it is hands down the better game over Xsyon and MO.  Xsyon "sounds" great on paper with its features and such, but once you play the game..you wonder where the coders are and why the graphics, controls, sound, UI etc feel like an amateur attempt from 2001.  Stay away, stay far away...at least until a trial or buddy key.

I bought it too. I had some problems. First i took it out of windowed mode, and it crashed repeatedly, so i went back into windowed mode, and it worked fine for a while. Then i started getting some message about cleaning the world over and over, and i could never get back in.

While i was able to play it was kinda fun. I had a little plot of land i had claimed for my tribe of one, and i was terraforming it and making a little road to it fromt he main road nearby. Was a lovely piece of land right on the shore of the lake.

I would not buy this game at this time, imo its not ready for primetime. I really hate to say that, because i like that somebody is trying to do something different.

Perhaps you would not experience the technical difficulties i experienced, in which case this game would be fun for you. Its still extremely raw and primitive, but owning your own beachfront property is nice. Hope they get things working more smoothly, i would be keen to try this one again in the future, it has a lot of potential.

You couldn't have been accepted into beta.  The only beta testers were either in house or those who pre-paid for the game. If you don't work for them, weren't friends/family or didn't pre-pay for the game, you had no chance to participate in beta.

Well, that's good and bad I suppose.

It's good because now I don't have to worry about regretting having taken part in it.

It's bad because now I am wondering why I would still swear that I got an email for beta invite. I'm gonna have to go through the list of newer mmos that have gone under the radar just to keep me from thinking I'm going crazy

Im one of those people who ended up paying for the "preorder and early access" only to find out what that meant, and got a refund.

I have heard they have fixed a lot of the issues that made the game, when i played, feel like some nightmare paid-for alpha testing, that made me envy those who chose to go to earthrise over this game.

However, i do know that Tribal Wars, which is suppose to be like all the content, is still a long ways off.

When i left it was a boring crafting system (boring methods of harvesting, add mats to recipie and watch crafting bar)  However thats all there was, no real combat system, and no real use for anything i made.  I think being decked out in top of the line gear and naked punching was the diffrence between looking geared and looking scrub, nothing i wore effected gameplay.

So personally, i do respect them for giving out refunds, and i am waiting untill the Tribal War's expansion or patch.

If your on the line about buying, think to yourself if you enjoy sorting, harvesting, spam crafting?  If you get into a large tribe, everything will be made already, all mats will be stockpiled, there isnt a thing for you to do other than experience the terrible combat system thats currently in place...so if you do take the pluge in, find a secluded spot, and pretend theres no one else out there, otherwise youll be burned out with nothing to do fairly quick.

Once this Tribal Wars gets in place, the game stands to be something decent, untill then, there really isnt much to do at all.
