best starting class?

Ok I did try out the game during beta but did not get very far due to the fact I was very busy with CoH at the time. I picked this up in  target last week for 6 or 7 bucks I think, and just now started installing it.

So whats a good starting class? I will be playing very casually when I want a break from CoH. any tips or things to avoid?

    Basically it really doesn't matter. Chose the profession that most excites you. You'll cover the same matterial in the same way generally speaking. The real trick will be in learning the abilities and limitations of the profession you chose and where to assign the points availible. That takes a bit of trial and error, to find what works for your play style . Bridge officers are very important to the game , do not I repeat do not discard any Blue or Purple BO's that are not in the profession you chose. Train your BO's in skills as they level. There are more  tips , but you'll need to figure out stuff as you go . Cryptic is horrible as far as giving instruction to players and detailing skill sets.  Good luck.

    All three classes are just as easy to play through the PvE-content and you can fly every ship, no matter what class you chose. A tactictian can aswell fly a cruiser or science vessel if you prefer to for example and isn't bound to only flying escorts. The ship-classes only differ in the bridge officer slots and how much weapons etc they can fit, but overall are pretty much the same in PvE. Ground-combat is the same for all classes aswell and much more dependant on your bridge officers and their abilities.

    Tactician on an escort does lot's of burst-damage and kills it's targets fast. Escorts are small, fast and agile.

    Engineers flying cruisers do good damage and are basically tanks. They are a bit sluggish to manouver and pretty boring imho firing their beam-arrays.

    Scinctist on scince-vessels take the approach of medium firepower paired with tons of special abilities like debuffing, scrambling and other interesting stuff. They're allmost as fast and agile as escorts and imho the most fun thing to play.

    It's only a question of preference and you'll have one of each anyways in the end with your given three character-slots.

    In PvP things are looking different tho, and you want to play in a coordinated team basically, but PvP starts in the end, when there's no other content left anymore. PvP is basically just a meaningless addition not even giving good rewards so far.

     Comparison

    Each class has a certain focus and can perform one or more group roles, as well as a starship that best matches that particular class.


    • Engineers are best suited in the Healer and Tank roles. Tanks take the brunt of damage in battle and try to attract all enemies to themselves, while the DPS or Damage players do the majority of the actual firing and damage. As healers, Engineers are adept at healing hull damage, although they also have strong shield healing. Their focus is primarily on survivability and resilience in space combat, while supporting their Away Team in both space and ground combat with fixed-position automated weaponry, shield and medical generators, technological buffs, and other repairs and improvements. Engineers wear the color gold for their uniforms and are ideally matched with a Cruiser, which is also best suited for tanking.

    • Science officers are most useful in the Healer and "Buffer/Debuffer" roles, where they provide healing and buffs for allies (and themselves), as well as powers that weaken and disable enemy vessels and NPCs. Science officers also provide medical treatment, such that they can revive other players or Away Team member quickly. Science officers wear the color blue and are ideally matched with (of course) Science Vessels.

    • Tactical officers are most useful in the DPS or Damage roles; they do their best work while dealing damage to enemies in ground and space combat. Tactical officers wear red and are best matched with an Escort vessel, which is also the best starship in terms of inflicting damage to enemies.

    I haven't played in a while, but I played a Science officer in a science ship, and I really enjoyed the combo.  You can use your bridge crew to fill in any things you are lacking.  Ground combat was similar, I just threw a debuff or two and then blasted things (didn't enjoy the ground combat, but I liked space battles).

    My first and only character has been a tactical officer flying an escort. DPS at it's finest, keep a good selection of cannons on your ship and you'll tear through most enemies within seconds, granted escort hulls are made of paper, and keeping shields up is a struggle.

    Very straightforward class to build though, and very satisfying to play with. image

    Like everything else it depends on your play style. I like dog fighting in space, doing plenty of damage and out flying opponents. I play a Tactical Officer and I fly a Tactical Escort ship.

    Very true.  My first main was/is a Tac Officer in an Escort.  Once I started playing the Science Officer, however, I got stuck on him.

    I liked the Engineer too.  Just not enough time to play all of them, especially given the fact that I play other games.

    To the OP, what style of character do you like to play?  That's the most important thing.

    Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
