Honestly..Is it too late to get into WoW?

Hi, I've never played any MMORPG in the past but I was kind of a hardcore RPGer. I've been wanting to try a MMORPG but just cant decide which one to play, I had WoW and RIFT on my mind and since I've been reading so much bad reviews lately about RIFT so I kind of gave up its interest. So all my choices left is WoW and which is an old game... Do you guys think it's too late to get into this game? I have some friends that play this game every day and night and they are high lvl players. If I start playing WoW now... doesn it mean that I'll never catch up to them?

You'll be able to catch up to your friends in just a few weeks, atleast lvl wise, I stopped playing WoW 2 months ago but have been playing since release, its a good game and timesink but it gets boring after awhile, Give the trial a try, if you dont like it then wait for something new to release.

    If you can read this please, i beg you please! 01000111 01100101 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100001 01101001 01100100 00101100 00100000 01100100 01110101 01100100 01100101 00101110 00101110 00101110

Wow is starting to get old, but it still has the highest playerbase in any western mmo. Also if your friends are playing it and if they help you it shouldnt take long for you to catch up with them. Try to find a server which has lots of rerollers, by which I mean low-level-players. That way your jorney from 1-70 isnt that lonely. Definetly its not too late. Wow has been made that way that you can start it now and catch up with the people pretty fast. Actually responding to this post made me think about going back :P :D

If you want a easy casual family themepark game choose WoW.

If you claim to be hardcore rpg player i suggest seek a sandbox mmo.

Saga of ryzom-Asherons call-xsyon-darkfall-eve and some others.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Nah, with Cataclysm having been released, you can get up to level 55 in not even a week of casual playing. Then it's off to outlands (which is honestly best ignored, and instead you just grind dungeons, unless you want to see the magnificent worlds in outlands), then to Northrend for levels 68-80. Depending how "hardcore" you play, you can level up very quickly. I played a Worgen druid as my first alt and managed to get him to level 65 with about ten hours of playtime.

Essentially, you can catch up to your friends in about a month if that. Level cap is at 85, and the levelling curve is really shallow. You shouldn't have a problem.

The only thing I will say is that you'll want to be wary of the community. New players are far and few between nowadays, and since WoW is the most mainstream of MMOs, it attracted the lowest common denominator of humanity. Now these people are high level and find it fun to mock lower-level players for not knowing where to go / what to do / who to talk to.

Find yourself a helpful guild or run with your friends and you should be golden.

WoW is showing it's age, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun. Ignore the naysayers on this forum. All they want is a throwback to old-school MMORPG games that didnt ahve quests, or tools to actually make your life easier.

As a person that detests WoW I'll say that the leveling is so fast now you'll catch up to them even casually in a month or two.  I could hit 85 in a week if I played a lot.  Then it's just a matter of grinding gear for pve or pvp.

If it were me and I was given the choice between Rift and WoW I would play Rift. They are similar games but Rift has at least a couple concepts like dynamic Rifts opening up and unique combinations of soul trees to choose from.

Personally if you are a Dungeons and Dragons RPer coming over to a MMORPG you will be disappointed with the lack of depth in choice you are given in the modern MMO.  I would wait for Guild Wars 2, Tera or Star Wars: The Old Republic just on the horizon as they all three offer the first 'next-gen' level of detail that a table top player will savor.

So my opinion, you've waited this long, wait another few months for one of the newer games coming out. The current crop of games is fairly hollow.

I recently started a new character in WoW. Took me 5 played days to get from 0 to 71. About that time I realized that as pretty as the new Cata stuff is, it was just more of the same and I totally lost interest.

You'll be solo the entire time, there simply aren't other people playing other than in dungeons. They just stand around in town by the auction house and wait for dungeons or raids to pop I guess. I say a total of 3 other people from 0-71 in the field.

Rift is the same, but with more people and less to do. If you've never played either, then you'll probably enjoy both however. I'd say try Rift first as a new MMO I guess.

Depending how hard you work at it, you can catch up to your friends in roughly 2-4 months and be raiding with them nightly. (Unless they're the server first sort of crowd, but hey, let them carry you.)

Get started and have fun, WOW is a great introduction to the world of MMORPGs, come back and see me when you're ready to 'graduate' to the next level. image

I think it's too late to start with WoW now. Not because WoW is good or bad (I have my opinion and won't share it here so that OP can try it open minded), but because you *MUST* buy the main game and 4 expansions at once, costing you about $100. IMO this is insane!

If you're a RPGer, I think you won't mind a little (level) grind, and then there are far 'cheaper' alternatives (expansion wise). Aion, EQ2 and Lineage II pop to mind. Even Age of Conan (only 1 expansion) would be a good alternative price wise.

But as said before, OP should get a couple of trials on several games and see what he likes most. Personally, I think this is the cheapest way to give MMORPGing a try from pen-n-paper RPGing...

One of the main reasons WoW is so successful is because you can always catch up. Some people hate this about it.. but never the less its true.

    Remember Old School Ultima Online

I went back to WoW 'till Rift gets a dungeon finder so... meh.  Still lots of folks in the newbie zone and dungeon pops are still good, I'd say go for it.

Though, I'll probably get hooked on Brink.

...And all this is just a filler until GW2/SWTOR anyways so it doesn't REALLY matter.

WoW was a huge success even before your statement became true. So, I wouln't say it was one of the main reasons.

Why not try a few free trials of various MMO's as there are quite a few out there. Even some that are free to play like LotRO and Champions Online where you don't have to buy the game so don't get burnt when you find out you don't like it.

Some of the free trials are for a limited time like 7 or 14 days ect but some are infinite but are capped at a certain level or just restricted to certain areas like Age of Conan and Warhammer Online.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the MMO of your choosing :)

I've played all kinds of MMOs from way back when they first started comming out, games like Ultma (their very first MMO version), DAOC (best PVP ever . ) SWG (sad they messed with it) , even tainted my hands with WOW.  Not to bash WOW, but it was a bit to cartoonie and simple for my taste, played it for a few years but it never grabbed my like DAOC had.  Personally I am waiting for SWTOR, if you want to start new you can play WOW and play catch up to everyone or wait till SWTOR is realease and start fresh with everyone else.  In MMOs you are never 'to late', unless they are getting read to pull the server, just like in real life, there is always someone out there that can kick your ass no matter how powerful you become :)

Not that I really want one to be added to Rift, but I can see his reasoning.  Since 1.1 many guilds have closed ranks.  If you are in a small guild, one that has advanced above ones tier, or aren't simply in one, then its much harder to now find groups.  There's simply less PuGs forming.  While I think WoW's dungeon finder has caused other (major) issues, it has made  dungeons more accessible.  So for an end game casual they are beneficial.

Thanks folks! lots of response :) I am not really looking forward for SWTOR (not my style in terms of graphics and was never a StarWar fas), GW2 (maybe.. don't know if the gameplay will suite me), TERA (unsure about Korean MMORPG), but might give it a try, have to see how big the cummunity is when it releses). Ya so as I mentioned before I have lots of high lvl real life freinds that plays WOW and are willing to help me lvl up. But my concern is that I really don't want to go through my lvling "too" fast as I kind of want to enjoy the game (walking around the towns, NPGs, story, learning my basic/advanced hotkeys). Will there be another WoW expansion coming out in the near future? One more thing that I want to ask you guys about WoW is that do you guys use any walkthrough  guides? Or WoW doesn't need a walkthrough guide? Because when I played Final Fantasys, I always wanted to use a walkthrough guild to make sure I get every single item..etc. Is WoW different? Thanks

you can go from a brand new lvl 1 with no gear, experience, or anything, to a raid ready character with a few thousand gold  in 2-3 weeks playing casually, pretty easily.

As for expansions,  not for another 2 years. They only just released their last one.

As for walkthroughs, dont buy them. They are a total waste of space.   Take your time,   walk through the world,  enjoy the massive lore of the game, and have a good time.  Once you are out of the starter zones, the game flows very well, and youll learn your class and the game mechanics in no time.

If you choose Wow you will need to buy all the xpacs. The time to get from level 1 to 85 can be a chore. if you find a good guild don't expect much help unless you have friends. You will see tons of capped lvl players flying around on mounts you most likly will never obtain, even if they even still reward them. you will have to grind alot to get the gold to buy your flying and mount. mounts are fairly cheap. to train the riding your gonna be buying gold or begging near the AH for some.

you will cap you will set idle in a city waiting for ques you will look like everyone else. you will be bored you will sub to rift.

unles you don't mind going through all the pain to cap and get groups give it a whirl. Oh and ...I played rift it was fun don't let the haters fool you man. If had the time I would buy it but my game time has been halfed as of late.

Im playing both WoW and Rift but i would recommend WoW over Rift. bewarned it can be very addictive.

Now it's actually the best time in years for a new player to join WoW. All the leveling zones have been remade, quests from 2003 thrown out and the entire leveling content updated and massively improved.

Leveling a new character is a blast now, I really recommend you to try the free trial.

  • kjempffkjempff Member RarePosts: 1,759

Not getting into what other better choices there are, so assuming you will play wow since your friends are there.

You could get a max level char in some weeks, but why ? much of the game is what you experience while levelling up, so I recommend taking it easy and see the world. It will be a solo adventure, but max level is all about gearing up by running the same instances or raiding the same targets.. so it can get dull for some.

Dont let your friends spoil you too much :)

the game now gives you so much gold while your levelling that having enough to buy the riding skills is really not a problem.. though a mistake quite a few make is buying equipment on the AH.. quest rewards and loot drops are all you really need.. and if you take up gathering skills (mining and skinning) you will have the gold even faster.. if anything.. it really got too easy.. (as if it was all that hard to begin with....) WoW is still the top fantasy MMO.. but.. Rift is also a good enough option if you like fantasy based games.. though obviously. WoW has far more in game content... if in doubt try both on free trials..  doesnt get any easier than that.. or cheaper image
