Xsyon vs Minecraft

ObieNobieObieNobie Member Posts: 2

So i have been looking at this game. I would have gotton it by now to test it out but it has the 40$ price tag that i don't really agree with for a indie game. If i did go to this game i would bring about 2-5 other people to start a little area with. I am a HUGE minecraft player and would probably mostly build in this game. I have been screwed on many recent MMO's and would not like to again. So is this game for me? I am fine with a learning curve i played SWG pre-nge and loved it. I want a time sink that doesn't really feel like a time sink. (if you have played minecraft you know what i mean i can start at 8pm and at 2am it will feel like ive been playing an hour.) I have no interest in the combat or pve. Mostly what im looking for is a MMO version of Minecraft that i can build (maybe not as grand buildings as minecraft) but make my friends a cool *homebase*.

I salute you for being a Minecraft player as I am aswell :).

I looked into Xsyon awhile back. It sounded like a fun game but the problem is ive heard that alot of bugs are going unadressed and alot of people are leaving. From what Ive seen, the updates and fixes just arent coming fast enough.

The foundation of the game is cracked and quickly crumbling underneath it. Gamers are very keen to seeing this and have been fleeing for their lives. At the 40 dollar price tag I personally wouldnt reccomend you buying it atleast not right now. The concept could work if the company can keep up but at the moment it seems like that wont happen.

Thats just my 2 cents, I hope it is helpful and may all your dreams in Minecraft be realized :D

If you are a builder you will enjoy the game. The broken part is combat, so if you don't bother with it you'll be fine. The poster above me clearly don't play the game. The lag is fixed, I haven't seen any bug in the last 3 weeks. There are people who experience technical difficulties, but a reinstall usually solves their problems.

TY for info... Is it worth the 40$ price tag with only 3 devs? to me thats a lil much for a indie game. Ive spent much more on games though in the past but they always had more than a 3 man dev team. Is the size of the team a problem at all?

I'll start off with the fact that I support (with my own $) nearly every indie MMO that comes up. EVE, Darkfall, Minecraft (I even operate my own server for f***'s sake), and most recently Xsyon. This game was slated for release in 2010, and was delayed until last month. Now I wasn't around for the days of Dark and Light, but let me tell you this, if I ever had a comparison for what a sham this game is, that would be it. In one sentence.

    This game is a shell.

The game sells it self on the premise of being a post-apocalyptic FFA PvP Free-world building Sandbox. Barely a fraction of that even exists now that the game is RELEASED and being sold for $40.

    You an explorer?

Too bad. The miniature sized map that only a large feeling due to the extremely low population, is empty of features. In the days of Fallout:3, Fallout:New Vegas, and a half dozen post-apoc Earth MMO's, we all know what post-apoc Earth would look like. Not Lake Tahoe circa 1,000 BC. All buildings are player made, which are nothing but a mish-mash of animal-skin Tepee's, hobo-style tents and lean-to's surrounded by wooden palisades and sandstone brick walls. Because when you have stone bricks, you make your house out of animal hide amirite? Not that it matters, because not a single structure has any additional function than being a barrier. Aside from player-created buildings, did every building from white picket fenced home to hospital simply turn to dust to make up the junk piles of the world of Xsyon? Apparently. After moving about for more than 5 minutes you'll notice the lack of any terrain differences or noteable features aside from the waterfall right next to that other waterfall. No cliff overhangs, no caves, no tunnels. Oh and SpeedTree.

    You an achiever?

Well boy have I got news for you! Not only is leveling skills and finding new crafting recipes repetitive and pointless (aside from unlocking more pointless objects to make) it's incredibly easy to max out skills illegitimately. Coming from Darkfall and seeing its weaknesses to macroing, me and a friend used another account to use AutoHotKey to grind out skills while we were away. 1 day, 500 stone bricks mined and crafted, 300 caught fish, and 49 levels of Terraforming later we realized how quickly hardcore PvP'ers will abuse this to get the edge skillwise on their opponents. Because they can and will to win more pixels. Achiever's tend to not stay long when their hard earned achievements can be completed by people who are AFK. Not to mention that several ENTIRE branches of crafting trees have an icon yet don't do anything, only further teasing you about how a face of a game that isn't there is put over a scam for your $40. Crafting skills as basic as Cooking aren't even in the game "yet". Not that it matters though, because your Thirst and Hunger meters don't actually measure anything. My character hasn't eaten or drank in a week. Seeing a pattern?

    You a killer?

Sweet! You can kill any person you see on sight and take everything on their corpse! Provided you remember that ranged combat, the bows to do ranged combat, magic, and staves used to cast spells aren't even in the game, and that they don't run into a tribal area safe zone for which there is no game mechanic retaliatory option in place. There's an overabundance of different armor types, all of which do nothing. This game's PvP system is based on tribal warfare marked by tribal zones, yet no war can be declared to allow for rival asset destruction/theft, or allow free PvP between warring tribes. All those huggy lovey carebears just run back to their tribal areas and craft away while they wait for the impatient Couterstrike crowd to find another helpless sap carrying an entire Oak tree on their back. So the pvp'ers get FFA zone-restricted PvP with no ranged combat, no magic, and no abilities or equipment that augment their melee.

    You a socializer?

This is probably the only function of the game that is not a shell. Doesn't mean the interface or look of it is very good, but it's there. You can only talk to people in your zone and it's adjacent zone (yours plus the other 8 touching it). This leaves you to "shout" in General chat with about 10% of the game world at a time. Considering the current population, and given "chat zone" will probably get you about 5 people at peak hours. I know some tribes claim to have 150 members, but even re-rolled, unsubbed, and deleted characters stay within tribal rosters. Tribal leaders only adding and keeping their names to allow a larger size tribal area based upon a bug in the tribal zone expansion mechanics that allow non-existant characters to "contribute" to the size of the clan roster. Not that you'll be able to talk to anyone as the server crashes on a regular basis (with the most recent occurence happening this past Friday at peak hours which kept the server in a chokehold to the ground for nearly 2 days).

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the game, I'm saying you shouldn't buy it anytime in the next 2 years. Because this game is in Alpha stage right now. You can't even call this games state a paid Beta when the crafters make armor with no effects, architects who make buildings with no point, PvP'ers without a PvP system beyond left clicking an opponent with a hand axe, and a dev team with the quality assurance rating of Toyota, and the communication abilities of an Indian outsourcing firm.

It depends on how much are you willing to spend on your enjoyment. If 40 USD is too much for you, don't buy it. If you are ready to pay this price for a unique game which is not polished, not AAA, lacks some features and has a small team then go ahead. I didn't regret buying it at all, but that doesn't mean that you will feel the same way.

The small team is a problem. It means slow developement and slow bug fixes. They work day and night, during the weekends and holidays but there is a limit for what 3 men can do.

If you want to be on the safe side, wait a month or 2.

Xsyon loads of fun during beta. started playing on release with my friends and its boring as hell, just stand on a scap pile 24/7 scavenging and when you have your crafts at 100.... NOTHING, there is absolutely NOTHING to do.

Stick to minecraft is my advice, one of the best games out there.

I agree with the advise to wait with Xsyon until it's more clear where it's headed.

But your post about fun during beta and boring gameplay after release got me wondering. Xsyon's gameplay didn't change from beta to release, it's exactly the same.

The only difference might be that you did "fun" things in beta and "boring" things after release, but one can't really blame the game when a player decides to opt for boring gameplay. Nobody forced you to stand on a junk pile 24/7 and get your craft to 100.

When you have reached "end game"  and realize there is nothing else to be accomplished what do you expect players to do?    Maybe if the terraforming / crafting systems allowed you to actually build structures then there would be more fun but mounding up dirt in various useless fashions can possibly get old after a few hundred times.

This, coupled with no economy and no reason to trade at all (everyone can make everything within a week of starting the game), no political landscape (nothing can be done PvP wise between tribes at the moment), and no "other" content (animals are still so rare GMs are spawning them for people) is why people are bored at the moment.

Well i can tell you to stick with minecraft for the forseeable future.

Xyson is a paid alpha test.  I was lucky to get a refund and get my $40 back however i dont think they are doing that anymore.

Basically, its a great game at heart, and your first day or so alone in the wilderness will be fun.

    However.

Join a tribe and everything that needs to be done is already done, such as terraforming and most crafting.  Its still at least 9months away from having any use for anything crafted or terraformed.  Thats right nothing you craft has a use currently, except mabey to craft more useless stuff.  You could build structures that are purely visual, but chances are that has been done already.  You will have more fun in the game if you run far from other players and play the game as a solo game in this sense.

See armors and weapons dont have much of a use, hopefully they fixed it because when i played the best setup was unarmed combat naked, you never lost anything and all that fancy armor did was make you die in 4.5 punches instead of 5.

Theres really no mobs to kill, and the combat is so bad that pvp was pointless.

Tribal wars is suppose to bring it all together, give everything a purpose, but realistically thats so far away.

The namesake of this game is suppose to be crafting, at least i was told this over and over again when i played.  Crafting is you gather mats, convert them, add them to recipe and watch the green bar fill up.  Then eventually *poof* you suddenly can make more stuff.  Rinse and repeate.  For me it was more fun when there was a (no joke) 5min delay beween input and actions, as it was difficult and i couldnt possibly do anything else with the lag. Once things smoothed out, everyone started crafting everything and again, it all had no purpose.

I have heard minecraft is a finished game with things to do and items with use, as well as structures, even saw that youtube video witht he australian guys burning down that ship, yeah you wont get any of that in xyson.

Also, and this was a huge sticking point with me....Xyson takes play a year after the apocolypse, where is all the wreckage, ruines, thinks from a year ago?  Its just an empty nature setting with some junk pile texture (poorly textured at that) placed over some spots.  You mean to tell me that whatever ended civilization destroyed all traces of human life but left nature untouched?  This game is a "your a caveman" type game with an apocolyptic storyline.  Its like they didnt have time to make the game look proper for its story and lore.  Even the screenshots had at least wrecked cars and a hubcap, which still was underwhelming.

Come back in a year or year and a half like i may, if the games still around at least.  This things still in alpha.
