You are 100% correct. However, it hasn't. Trust is earned based on performance. So far, this has not happened to Microsoft. So, you have every reason to trust them, as with Sony up to 2 weeks ago.
Now? Sony has burnt their users and many people including myself and the 3 other accounts I have to pay for will no longer line Sony’s wallet. If this happened to Microsoft a month from now? You’re damn right they will lose my business as well. It’s just the way things go.
If it happens once, shame on them, if it happens twice? Shame on me. Sony will not get that second chance.

That's IF they still have enough money to keep rolling after all this, they're being sued now as well for $1 billion. And each day the servers are down, it's costing them money.

While I’m against using Sony now, I’m not going to kid myself about the 1 Billion dollar lawsuit.
First, it’s a class action suit started by one lawyer, representing one kid in Ontario, Canada. If you think for a second this doesn’t get thrown out, you’re crazy.
However, the banks are upset in the countries that were affected. They may seek reparations of cost due to people canceling cards etc. Or on the more serious side, the $$$$ that could potentially be lost due to the CC fraud and purchases world wide with this stolen info. Further down the road, is a users info was indeed used in identity theft crimes, they could be liable for that well, but that’s on an individual base only. If you fall victim to this fraud, you’ll have to hire a lawyer and attack Sony yourself.
The servers being down have not cost them a cent so far actually. You pay monthly for your SoE access. They already have your money. In fact they are probably saving money as the costs and overhead in running the servers is reduced drastically. Really, they won’t feel a monetary loss until the next month’s payment is due and noone renews. which won’t happen BTW cause they are giving each user a free 30days, and after that 30 days, your accounts will be auto billed for the next 30 or whatever your payment plan is set up on and people cancle because of this debacle. Until then, there is no $$ loss here really. A side from NEW accounts signing up, and lets face it, the numbers have been dropping as it is, not increasing.
To be honest, this breach etc probably just killed off Sony's PS3 completely.
Yup, and bigfoots president of the moon.
As for the op, have fun fidning a system where something like this CANT happen.
I highly doubt the behemoth known as the Playstation 3, will simply fall over and die. Yes they are going to take a large dent in trust, but seeing as they have exclusive games such as Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, Valkyria Chronicles, Loads more Exclusive Titles. etc.~ It will still stand even after this intruision.
I just don't see it happening, sony will be forgiven in time.
E3 2011 will be interesting however, its almost here. =P!
By some, yes. By some, no.
Not only will I no longer ever subscribe to a SOE game, but my kids are no longer going to ever be using the PSN again. As a matter of fact, they traded in their PS3 and some games today toward a 2nd Xbox 360 (now they each have one).
I could care less what exclusive games the PS3 console has, how many bows-of-apology Sony makes, or what they try to pull out of their arse.
They. Failed. To. Secure. Data. By. Even. Basic. Methods.
Neither my children, nor myself, will be using SOE or PSN ever again.
Period.
They didn't fail to secure data. You don't know how secure a system is until something like this happens. Information gets stolen all the time but they aren't usually stolen on such massive scales because you're likely to get caught. These people targeted sony to specifically damage their reputation, not to get their hands on our data.
You could have the most secure network in the world but if someone was dedicated enough to getting in, they would. I highly doubt the secruity for PSN was poor.
Everyone blames poor secruity to quickly. Good hackers are always 1 step ahead.

Everyone blames poor security because reports have already come out by those agencies involved in fixing it, that SONY had very outdated security and did not encrypt personal information.
Read a few articles on the topic from actual news sites, not blog-sites like MMORPG.com.
Sony did, indeed, cut corners and fail to (1) have proper security and encryption, and (2) notify their customers in a timely manner.
Yes, Microsoft can get hacked as well.
However, I've never blamed SONY for getting hacked.
I've blamed them for the outdatted security and lack of encryption they knew they were using at our expense.
He (Kazuo Hirai) also said that while user passwords had not been encrypted, they were transformed using a simpler function called a hash that did not leave them exposed as clear text.
Sony works like this: they get hacked now and will max their security.
When that is done they dont look back on it since they think their security is the best there is.

As I said before I think after this incident SoE will be the safest place on the web to store your information. lol

They should have been as safe as feasable to begin with. Instead, they used outdated Apache software, unpatched, with no firewall . They were warned about the security problems several months prior to the attack. They failed to care, and failed to take the necessary security-fix steps (and I can link to the MSNBC video that discusses it, for those that don't want to believe that Sony was 100% negligent in the matter).
Sorry, not even for DCUO will they ever get my business again.
Well in all honesty... The damage to me as a person is rather minimal as 98% of the data stolen is considerd public records were i live...And considering that my name is pretty much one of a kind (to such a degree that i have had mail deliverd to me even if the sender put down the wrong adress.
And since i have a card without anyncredit on it and never keep large sums of money on that account any way... again not too worried.
So... No this have not driven me away... Those of us who are born on the right side of 1985 most likley have had our identity stolen allready several times... Since the early days of the WWW-boom was not all that secure and still we went on with our merry lives.
DCUO and Sony will stil be around tommorow. People will puff out their feathers and jump on soap boxes but consumers do not personally care about fraud until it happens to them. We really have short memories when it comes to any type of personal safety. If they enjoy the games, they will come back and play again.

Oh, that Sony, SOE, DCUO, EQ2, PSN, et cetera will continue, and continue to thrive, is without debate.
I was speaking only for myself.
Do I enjoy DCUO?
Sure, I do.
Will I ever be subscribing to it again while SOE owns it?
Nope.
Which means that although I do enjoy the game, I'll be playing one of the games I also enjoy, by a different company.
See, SOE isn't the only big boy company on the block anymore, where I have to put up with all their BS just to play an MMO.
That would be unfortunate if you left over this incident.
The biggest inconvenience to me is just having to call up my bank to cancel my card and the wait time for a new one to arrive.
The rest of the information captured is just phone book, infospace, yellowpages information for the most part.
Poor handling of tickets, excessive forum mod abuse (like WishStone on Star Trek Online forums), etc. is more likely to get me to not resub or purchase CStore items.
I petitioned an infraction on the STO forums via the ticket system only to have a ticket GM instruct me to contact one of the forum mods for help.
I put a public post about it in the general forums without any other details other then, "Hey I a ticket GM told me to speak to a forum mod about this infraction. Who do I direct this to?"
Guess what happened? Wishstone the head community director banned me for TWO weeks as a result.
That's utterly insane if you ask me.
That's when I subscribe to your concept of "Not the only MMO Company on the block" and move on to the next game.

Probably true. Don't know.
To be honest, I play the game and don't visit the Cryptic forums (just the main website for the announcements of what the new addition is). Only forums I visited were DCUO-PC because they are like watching a really gruesome train wreck.

Not really. To be honest, I should have stayed away from SOE in the first place. I'd been their customer enough times before and have rarely ever been happy giving them my money. I gave them the benefit of the doubt with DCUO because of names like Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and Marv Wolfman being attached.
I like DCUO . . . but not for $15/mo. It should have stayed with the F2P/microtransaction model that was originally on the table during development.
The wife and I have joint accounts. She no longer wants the accounts in any way associated with SOE, and I agree with her.
I am quitting playing this and any other Sony game. What was so frustarting is the arrogance they displayed prior to this happening and in the first few days after it happened. Simply put I can't and don't trust Sony. While I enjoyed DCU I have found a few free games that I enjoy playing more.
I quit DCUO because of them. The game could be great but they botched it up something awful. So bad imo that I won't buy another game from them ever again, the only one I'd even consider is Planetside Next but at the rate they're going I doubt it will ever even release.
I am totally going to play for the free days I get, thats for sure. Paying for it is just kinda...ehhhh, not enough people online. But I haven't actually been in game yet, sometime this week I will get back into it. Friend also called me and said he got to play DC Online and loves it, and is buying it. So, good time as I get to play for free currently
As I said before I think after this incident SoE will be the safest place on the web to store your information. lol
It is worth pointing out that since the entire Sony network has come back online it has been hacked two more times and on top of that had two security flaws go live that any basic level administrator should catch.
Sony as a whole has done nothing but demonstrate incompetence with their network at every turn. From recongizing attacks, proper security to communication with their customers. Everything suggests that they will continue to make poor decisions and fail to do what is needed to secure their network.
It makes perfect sense to expect that Sony would spare no resource to securing their network and making their customers feel confident in doing business with them, but their actions both past and present are telling a completely different story.
I stopped playing because it was a terrible game, does that count?
I changed my credit cards and have no intention of giving them the new information because it's Sony. They've been hacked multiple times after the big one everyone knows about, but no one notices those. Everyone's too caught up in the big Anon debacle, the one attempt you SHOULDN'T care about. Those guys didn't do it for your information, they just wanted to feel important. It's the hackers that came in while Sony was focused on fending off Anon that ~were~ after your information. Those are the ones people should worry about, though ironically they're the ones getting the least press.
