Anyone else notice the footage in the videos they show like http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/sith-warrior-progression the combat is all one shot kills? There might be a few blocks or parries but then a finisher kills the enemy. No sword through the body but they come back for more stuff. Is this artistic license or is combat actually that fast?

I too, was wondering about that when I saw that video. Hoping some who replies here can sort that out

My guess is normal mobs will go down pretty quickly. however this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkUxGOT5xaw&feature=related shows that unless a mob loses all their health they can come back for more even after a hit.
Edit: To note though is that nothing of the actual speed of the lightsabers or actions are shorten just they may have taken a few of the extra hits out like taking a 5 hit fight down to a 1 hit fight. Nothing of the actual swining or blocking was changed.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
from what i can gather, id say the characters used in the videos are "overpowered" by some manner of GM "cheating", i would think its mostly be like this to show it off that your char would be stronger then the average trooper in some politicians army.
Or that could be possible as well.

Regarding the "one shot kills" thats because the video is showcasing a class especialy and so you wouldnt want to see really challenging combat enemys go on to fight for during the whole the video, instead you see a showcase of the Sith warrior abilities, equipment, Advance Classes as well as other cool stuff
Yes, blades going through bodies is possible, but only by using a specific skill, im sure ive seen it on a video before.
And yes the combat is that fast, if you didnt saw previous videos i recomend watching them, and my personal favourite the "Taral V walkthrough" it show real gameplay of a flashpoint.
Hope that helped
Note: BTW that videos is all gameplay, not cinematics.
Considering that video was clearly edited, I would think that a lot of the combat was taken out of it. It was a showcase of a class, not the combat.
The same question popped in my head as I was watching it, but once I payed attention it was pretty clear to me that it was cut footage.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Cut footage or not, it was still pure gameplay, not cinematics like you see in a lot of teasers and commercials for games like WoW or Rift.

The combat in TOR is faster than alot of MMO's in the market. The main reason is that some mobs die quickly, they want to give you the feel that you're powerful from the beginning. While in other MMO's you're killing one mob and that probably takes a few seconds, in TOR you're constantly fighting 3-5 mobs at the same time. For example, those 3-5 mobs equal one mob in WoW! And the AI is completely different, depending on the type of enemy... some will stay at range firing their weapon, others will try to come close to you and use melee weapons, others will try to flank you, etc.
They are still tweaking those things, but overall it works like i said. Except in PvP, where players take some time to kill (thank god).
I don't care how fast you take down mobs the combat system isn't anything new I was hoping for a 3rd person shooter kind of like global agenda. Playing a trooper, bounty hunter, or anything that uses shooting weapons is going to look cheesy and uncinematic. If any of you played the recent Star Trek Online, ground combat wasn't appealing at all having a point and click combat system. Point and click allowed players to shoot through walls and phase beam chasing you instead of going where it was fired at. Cover was pointless just like in Star Wars Galaxies. I guess it to late to change anything, but I think they made a mistake. At least the new Warhammer 40k MMO has the right idea.
Exactly how do you know that you will be able to shoot through object? So far I get a strong impression you can't and neither can the enemies you are facing. It has been stated a few times now that you can hide behind stuff for cover, but then won't be able to attack AND that if you hide like that the enemies will come up on you to attack instead. You know, basic corner pulling type stuff.

It was certainly gameplay, but I'm not sure it can qualify as "pure" due to the fact that it was edited to become a trailer.

I think what he means by pure gameplay is that everything you see in the trailer is possible for that class to do. Granted you might not kill even level mobs that fast but if your over leveled you could.

Trailer are usually very missleading if you want to make yourself an idea about game play. You better watch some real gameplay footage if you want to see how combat look like.
It is a story driven game so take a wild guess what gets more emphasis on.
Ok, now this argument I have no problem with BishopMiles. Hey let's face it, not EVERY single feature / animation / costume / etc . . . is going to please everyone. That is a simple fact. Your statement that you could shoot through objects though was false and needed to be addressed or people start to think falsehoods are facts. Thank you for ALMOST admiting the mistake.

What exactly is wrong with a story based MMO actually being based on a . . . story? For the people looking forward to this game, that is a HUGE plus. For the people that don't like it, heck, I can't even understand why they are even looking at these forums. I tend to stay away from things I don't like, better for the digestion, so I can't understand why others insist on coming here to troll.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
So just because alot of people do not believe story should be on the forefront we're trolls. Seriouly, get a grip.
Edit
Actuallly i was kind confused by your statement saint as the thread was refering to whether the videos your seeing was more cinematic and thus edited or is that actual unedited gameplay (combat)
How story fits into this thread/conversation i don't understand so I might ask for clearifcation on that.

One of the class videos (forget which) showed a lightsaber hit the enemy about 3 times before the enemy died. This would make it equivalent to other MMOs which have powerful weapons kill level equivalent mobs in about 3 hits. The video I saw it in was one of the class videos, and it was only one of the fights in the sequence. The attcks were not blocked either.
In trailers they will cut the sequences so that they alook the way they want to show it to the customer. Even if the trailer is ingame footage, they most certainly cut the scenes all over to have them look good. So yes he hit only once to kill, but if you watch the videos where people really played the game they had to hit maybe 5/6 time just like in any other mmo.
The worst exemple i can give about this is Darkfall, 10 years they said they will only show ingame footage and that what they did, but Ho god how the video looked diferent than in game experience!! The trailer looked like realistic combat like in M&B for exemple, in game it was a sprint fest in figure 8, i think thats the best exemple to demonstrate how much trailers can be missleading, even if they show ingame scenes.
edited a bunch of typing error and left some
I do think SWTOR is much faster paced than the older mmo, even though it won't be one shot like the trailer. this is due to SWTOR being a story based mmo, they won't drag the combat out too long because that will ruin the story telling mechanics, I would probably say the pacing is about the same as Dragon Age 2, where normal enemies fall pretty fast, cept the bosses.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
I don't know what videos you've been watching, but the only video i saw that happen was in the TARAL V flashpoints, because the mobs were "elites", and those who follow the game closely, all know that the game is taking alot of tweaks and balancing those kind of things. All the other videos i saw of the game in open world (and i saw alot), you can kill most mobs with one hit and you always face 3-5 or more mobs at one time.
Yesterday, i had the confirmation @ gamebreakertv show, that the trailers show exactly the way those classes play... you can argue that they choose some cool angles to the trailers, it's true, but the fact is that the gameplay is exactly like in the trailers.
In case you don't know what gamebreakertv is i'll tell you, it's a podcast that has several shows about several MMO's. They have one called "the republic" which is obviously about SWTOR. And one guy called MikeB which has played alot of MMO's and works for ZAM.com got hands-on with the game for 2 days.
