Or atleast put out an actual time table. Knowing when to look forward to it is better then being completely in the dark.

According to a letter from SOE, the services probably (note probably) won't be up until the end of May.

i doubt they can afford to be gone that long.it will effectively finish the soe games as people will just migrate to other games.

     Where did you see that?

The End of May thing is for fully restored PSN, SOE is hoping to have game servers back up as early as Friday, and I'm quietly optimistic about that.

Well I wouldn't be suprised one single bit.

1.) They are now under federal investigation. Which can take a long time.

2.) They are dependend on when Sony fixes and finishes their mess with PSN network.

3.) It takes a very long time to upgrade their entire infrastructre of outdated software, have it tested both functionally for all their services and then security wise tested and validated by the hired external security agency.

With the above in mind, I would actually take my hat off if they even manage to get back online before the end of may.

So we that got our info stolen that doesn't currently have a subscription gets screwed around? Great. I was thinking about going back to either Eq2 for nostalgia or to play at the extended. But i guess they just like to favor one part =p

No shit! Which is why MOST companies take their security seriously. The litigation that will stem from this could sink SOE.

lol, I get it that you don't like SoE. But this could happen to any company. And if this happened to "X company that you do like" you would be cursing the hackers. Maybe Sony did have some outdated security, but they're not the criminals here. People should be yelling for the hackers to be found and prosecuted and then sue the crap out of them. ugh people drive me nuts.

no, no. its a given that the hackers are at fault and should be caught and prosecuted but SOE should be held responsile for their part to. SOE is not blameless.  We know the FBI and SOE will go after the hackers... who is left to make sure SOE gets their due to?  US

    EXACTLTY!

Sure, blame the hacker(s), toss em in jail, cut their hair, dress em in pink, tie their shoe laces together, put plastic over their toilet seats, waterboard em...it's too late though. Our data is GONE!

As Kenze has pointed out, SOE may not be the "criminal" here, but they are most certainly culpable for their dismal and slipshod approach to security. Their lazy asses will cost people MILLIONS because they were too cheap to update their software.

I'm pissed at the hacker alright, but I didn't trust the hacker with my data, I trusted SONY!

The "This could happen to anyone" excuses are sickening. It DIDN'T happen to "anyone"...it happened to SOE and they DO share blame in it.

And the best part about the FBI being involved is they are going through EVERYTHING! SOE wanted to flip everything back on and sweep this all under the rug with 30 days free game time and some virtual trinket.

According to the letter from SOE, the services are down "temporarily".  That's all it said.

Well I wouldn't be suprised one single bit.

1.) They are now under federal investigation. Which can take a long time.

Except they're not under federal investigation, the FBI is conducting an investigation into the hackers, not SOE.

2.) They are dependend on when Sony fixes and finishes their mess with PSN network.

There was only one worm-hole.  There weren't two separate attacks.  Sony isn't going to to develop two entirely separate security systems for what is essentially the same data.  Doing things like that is what leads to poor security.

3.) It takes a very long time to upgrade their entire infrastructre of outdated software, have it tested both functionally for all their services and then security wise tested and validated by the hired external security agency.

Where did you get the  information that they have an entire infrastructure of outdated software and that they were going to upgrade it?  They're going to updgrade their front-end security and add some redundancies.

With the above in mind, I would actually take my hat off if they even manage to get back online before the end of may.

That may be true, but you're making some bad, poorly informed assumptions here.  Also, they probably started the process three weeks ago.

Ok if you all think this is a one time thing go to the BBB and read over 8 millions people's information was stolen online last year alone.  You just didn't hear about it because it wasn't as much as this.  And let me clue you in unless you knew you were one of the people those companies did not even bother telling you.  You had to find out after the fact of being violated in some way either by someone hacking your system or into your games or whatever it was with that information that was stolen and then the company when you told them patted you on the hand and said secure your computer better.

I would most definately say it could have happened to a diffierent company but for some reason they decided to target Sony whether it be Sony haters or just a cell of criminals Sony is really no more responsible than we are.  Sure they may have been able to make thing tighter to try and prevent this but did Blizzard while inactive accounts were being turned on do anything to prevent others from it?  No they left their site up and just let it  keep happening to people over and over and over.  Whole guilds got ripped off.  Pretty convenient that this happened after they started selling authenticators after bringing in an outside company to secure their database.

This truly is not about Sony this us about tracking down the people who are guilty of what happened.  Don't forget Sony is a victim as well as we are...   $37 million last year was the loss from people's personal information being stolen online.  So you can blame Sony all you want but it has been going on with a lot of companies NOT just Sony.

Oh and patience is a Virtue.  I would rather have my game down then for it to be being hacked or someone able to do again what just happened and managing to get even deeper into the system than they did.

What Sony has said is that the have been working 24 hours a day to try and get this fixed and they will have stuff up ASAP but that they will not put it up until things are resecured.  This isn't about oh I can't play my game this is about keeping people secure in the future and making sure this does not happen again.  Believe me I miss playing my EQ2 too but I have to be patient with a company that is willing to do at least something to make up for this downtime and help the people who's information was taken by helping people get into a local indentity theft program.  Which they said they will do but we have to wait until they are secure.

Think what you will. The hackers commited a criminal act and Sony commited, potentially, criminal negligence. Both parties are at fault. And yes, data is stolen every single day from companies but I can't think of one single breach this large.

What more can I say sony is a failure in my opinion.

I have been a subscriber to sony games for like 8 years, and I can say that from my experience their games decline, and they have totally screwed over their valued customers, let me explian.

I watched YouTube Videos posted by Anonymous, and I do not own a play station 3, but if you ask me sony is guilty as well, they applied a new patch, which broke peoples ability to use their own playstation 3 they way they wanted to.

For example if I buy a playstation 3, I OWN my PS3, I can do what I please with it, Toss it in the trash, Take it apart, anything I please, however sony deployed a patch of some kind which broke its ability to use Linux, or play certain games or movies on their system in the name of protection against piracy.

So what about piracy I dont care, PIrate Bay has and will always be here, so will Freedom of information, People will always illegally download movies, share them with friends, and such there is no stoping it, and I bet that 99% of pirates have a pc that can play DVD's or BluRay, so it doesnt matter if they cant play in their PS3 anyways, or let alone play pirated games there is always a crack for such.

I for one Do not support piracy, or any illegal doing's but what Sony did to its customers I see as wrong.

Sony has also failed to protect a customers information, such as RL Information, Telephone Number, Address, or anything else, they failed to provide encryption, and what I saw on the news the reason behind the hack was because they failed to update their apache scripting, or something about that, and their security software, but something really tells me beyond that is an inside job like Servers on a stick kinda thing.

What Sony has done, or any other service that will support such functions then later decline those functions even in offline mode, is seriously screwing with its customers, and to know why I Personally have not played a sony title for years, and I am sure glad that I did not even buy DC Universe to give it a try yet.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/27/class-action-lawsuit-filed-against-sony-for-security-breach/

So from what sources tell me sony is being sued for 1 Billion USD.

Yet they want to try and keep all their customers happy so they don't sue, IF sony does not give peoples rights back to the PS3, I may just file with the class action myself Haven't decide yet.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tm7UKo4IBc Anon 1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arU_z_Dngzw Anon 2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCK3zzgN-ds&feature=fvsr Anon 3, News You will never find them (;

Now I cant comment for any illegal doings, or such, but I am glad that someone is fighting for customer rights to some point, not saying that what they have done is right, but hey I dont play sony games so I really dont care, besides I am more of a Microsoft User, and I am sure that they wont make the same mistake as sony did (;.

Oh yeah as far as 30 days Free, Try the rest of your Life for free, ot maybe 10-15 years at least, do the math.

Lawsuit you could easily get thousands of USD.

1 Year free all games is only $360

So lessions learned for everyone here.

Anonymous is serious business, The Internetz is serious business dont piss them off.

Could this have been an Inside Job? Servers on a stick?

    Yeah...this one IS news worthy.

You have the facts wrong the 8 million I am talking about was full disclsure information of Bank Cards, credit cards etc.  Only 10,700 got stolen from SOE.  The only information of all 100,000,000 from Sony that got out was names, birthday, gender, etc. not bank and credit cards.

And you can put links to class action law suits that have been filed but until the burden of proof has been presented with no resonable doubt Sony is to be seen as innocent until proven guilty.  All that that shows me at this point in time is that there are money hungry people who will go phishing for anything they can get their hands on.  It's in the constitution innocent until proven guilty.  So the way I see it is when they have been found guilty of neglegance beyond a shadow of a doubt I might believe that they did something that was actually more neglegant than those business who allowed 8 million people's bank card info to get out and no one sued them.

It's like the guy who cuts in front of you to get you to rearend him and then sues you for everything you've got.  They are the kind of phisherman who are just waiting for a chance to linch someone for everything they have.  Same goes for Malpractice suits.  They are filed all the time but not always won.

And if this is so true why has not someone filed a class action lawsuit against Blizzard for not even notifying people whose accounts were turned on by hackers and hacked last year?  Blizzard doesn't even watch close enough to know when they've been hacked always blames it on the persons own computer but I would like to know how a keylogger got their information to their accounts when they were not even active and then the people had their computers checked andhad no signs of any kind of break in on their computers and yet Blizzard does nothing to stop it.  It just keeps going on and on and yet no one says or does a thing about it.  Hmmmmm seems a bit odd especially considering that Blizzard on WoW has the worst costumer service I have ever encountered online in my life and doesn't even care enough about their consumers to  let them know at all when they have been compromised.

In my eyes if Sony did do anything wrong they are already offering enough to me to make up for it considering that the hacking alone is estimated to cost them $120,000,000 and yet they are still willing to help me get into an identity theft program and will give me freetime and I am sure in-game things to try and make up for it.  You will probably never see anything out of the real criminals involved in this.  They are who should be paying us all.  So who is going to get the brunt of this even though they are a victim as well as we are in this?  Sony someone violated them as well as us and if they are willing to say let me help you with this I am willing to forgive.  To forgive is the best thing to do in this situation not be a linch mob.  Of course this is my oopinion I know there are a ton of people out ehre who don't believe in forgiving but as for me I go by the golden rule.  Do unto others as you would have done unto you and I would sure not want to get sued even though I had been violated right along with the person who was suing me.  :(

As I said previously, Sony made a huge security blunder here that no IT professional that knows 'Security 101' would make.

Based upon their press event, the hackers were able to pull this off because Sony does not segment their data with their network.

Once you are in their 'network' you have free reign. This is just mind-boggingly dumb.

Yeah, lets not seperate 77Million PSN Login information and PS3 trophy information! Wow! What a great idea! /Sarcasm

I am 100% sure that those in their IT department were fully aware of this but they just didn't have the budget/political will for it.

This isn't true at all, it's made up and based on misinformation of single person stating rumors as facts.

No mate, my facts are correct. The extent of the data can be debated, but neither you, nor I, know the details beyond what Sony has released, What we do know is that 100 MILLION identities have been compromised. Unlike credit card numbers, my identity is static and will be valid for decades (God willing).

And why the hell do people keep briniging up Blizzard?

This has NOTHING to do with Blizzard - it's about SONY! Everything you say now is tainted and not worth my time to read because rather than debating what is ACTUALLY going on, you bring up non-sensical crap about Blizzard. If you wanna talk about WoW, there is a forum here specifically dedicated to the entire game. Please, post there.

Also to those naysayers defending SOE, SOE admitted at a press conference that they handled security poorly, hashing passwords instead of actually encrypting them?

They would probably lose more subs otherwise + you can't cancel your subscription because their site is down. It's win-win for them, LOL.

No... I want your Judge. :P

Also to those naysayers defending SOE, SOE admitted at a press conference that they handled security poorly, hashing passwords instead of actually encrypting them?

According to latest news Sony appologised again and announced that they will compensate each person up to 1 million dollars who end up falling victim to identity theft and fraud! Next to the already announced compensation for Identity theft protection and credit monitoring!

If Sony / SOE were so innocent and handled security to the best of their abilities and followed all the rules.... they really wouldn't come up with any kind of compensation at all.

They know they were at fault and all they try to do now is prevent a mass exodus of lawsuits being filed against them all over the globe.

Only for the U.S. though, so that idea didn't come from Sony. They were probably forced to say that.

If Sony meant what they said they would say that was the case worldwide.

Since Europe hasn't put enough pressure on SoE yet, SoE says screw you to us.

Not yet... can still come tho.

If Neelie Kroes picks this up and takes action...........well...... then even I will start to feel a "tiny bit" of pitty towards Sony and SOE. lol.
