So stop creating havoc where it isn't neccessary saying things you have no proof to back it up. Like people are going to sue them, and they won't be coming back. Say what you want and say what you will, but soon they will have it all under control. I hope they get the person ('s) who caused all this trouble to everyone involved. I've been suffering some major withdrawal because I can't play EQ2, lols, well I love the game. It is by far the best game ever!!! I can't wait to get back into the game and have fun. No way am I giving up my account because of some "you know what" idiot-fool. I could go on and on, but I'm frustrated enough. I'm happy with what they offer us when we get back in the game, free time, and some goodies to download. Be nice to have some choices over what we could get. I just want to play. NOW....So HURRY BACK EVERQUEST2. By the way, I'm Devellesh on the vox server.

A hacker can hack, because its hackable.
So I prefer to blame SOE's security, and not the persons who make their weaknesses public.
if sony get hacked, and their IT security crew cant fix it.... why sony dont hire the hackers instead of suing them? it makes the hackers happy with a good job, and sony at the same time strengthen their security with well trained ppl
While I admit that a couple weeks ago I was entertaining the idea of checking out SWG again, I stand by this next statement, even if it would have possibly pertained to me in some considered potential future reality.
ANYONE giving money to SOE deserves what they get. Now, even more so than ever. Not only do they treat their paying customers like doggie donuts, but this whole security breach says the problems go a lot deeper in this company than originally seen.
I hope this is a deathblow to what I consider to be the worst game development company in the business. Anyone who is "addicted" to their product(s) enough to not walk away from them at this point deserves whatever they get. Just like real junkies earn whatever crap is thrown their way due to their addictions. SOE cares just about as much as those smack dealers do about their customer base.
I have no problem with people enjoying either type of product, but don't hate everyone else for being too smart to partake and being vocal about it. And don't expect pity when the shit slides your way, either.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
I hope Sony sells off Vanguard. They should have never owned a great game like that in the first place. I guess the same for EQ2. They never fixed any of there content and coding with patches yet they pump out paid expantions and advertise them as if its a new game.
Screw Sony, they are still standing becuse they were one of the founders of mmo's but they NEVER improved !
Rofl, you have no idea how securities work, easy to talk things when you have absolutely no sense of how they work.
What?
Hackers are at fault because it was their decision to hack when they could have done nothing. Hackers took the initiative. Just because it's hack-able doesn't mean it needs to be hacked, theat's the same as saying a human can be killed so they should be killed. No way is that acceptable.
SOE is at fault because the failed to defend the data. SOE failed to correctly react. SOE had already learned they needed better security and did not do enough. SOE will be found liable.
Both the Hackers and SOE should answer for this.
Now as for the OP's assertion that "Sony isn't going anywhere" I agree. I agree that Sony will live as a Corp.
I am not so sure about it's subsidiary SOE however, SOE may be finished.

Yeah, that it.
Agreed! And oh boy we can hope!

what is more likely is that Sony will be so severely damaged that the company itself will be acquired by another one.. possibly microsoft? though there are any number of companies that might be interested.
I can't believe how amazingly ignorant some people are. If you are sitting there in your chair thinking that SoE was only hacked because it was lax in its security protocols, then you are truly ignorant about online activity and how secure any information out there is. SoE is the easiest target right now because its a multi national company known for treating its customer base poorly. I've been playing SoE games and every other mmo i can get my hands on for almost 11 years. I have never had a bad experience with their customer service, nor do I feel that SoE will feel any long term damage because of this incident. THE PENTAGON WAS HACKED BY SOME KID IN THE UK!!! Every system is hackable given there is a person out there determined enough to get in. As soon as I heard there was a chance my personal information was stolen, I called my credit card company, bank, and sent a contact email to all 3 credit bureaus, as did every other half way intelligent person involved in this. As soon as this story went public, every major funding institution was on alert. I will back online playing as soon as they open servers back up, changing everything it will allow me to change, passwords, questions, billing information.
Exactly. The victim is giving transparent notice you "should" do what you "should have" been doing anyway.
You want SOE to fall? Listen I am still angry about many of their decisions, but some of their employees did fantastic work and many Players enjoyed that work... the MMOs themselves. I am not going to blame all the employees for this, and wishing for SOE to fail is doing just that whether people realize it or not.
SOE is just too big and no MMO publisher/owner should ever control that many MMOs. I think this may be part of the reason SOE was targeted in the first place... SOE has become 'The Man".
I would much rather see SOE reorganized, and many of their MMOs sold off to new owners... owners that care about the MMOs and the Players... that is my own hope.

I'm not sure I agree with that, to an extent at least. Are you really a victim when you're victimizing yourself?
Surely, when someone else is victimizing another, no one deserves that. But by this point, anyone getting in bed with SOE either knows what they're getting into, or hasn't done their due dilligence as a consumer. Personal responsibility has to come into play at some point. Its not like SOE's track record isn't YEARS long and hard to find out about.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
I understand that point, and you're right. I don't wish bad on the code monkeys who are just following marching orders from the suits. But what about all the employees of the MMOs getting sold off to new owners? Who's to say they get to keep their jobs when that happens?
To answer your questions, yes, I'd love to see SOE fail. And all of their employees NOT responsible for the many abuses to their players to find gainful and well-paid employment elsewhere.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
The probability of a 'sell off' isnt unrealistic.. but.. i think it will be a lot more serious than just a few games.... interesting times ahead i think.
I guarantee you it would take more like a nuclear for Sony to be acquired by some other company.
SoE servers will be back up and running sometime Friday, at which time 95% of players will go back to playing like nothing ever happened. No lawsuit will succeed, they most likely will clean house in some mid-upper level management and probably 1 big name employee, most likely Smed. SoE will probably sell off Vanguard, most likely SWG will go, but EQ1, EQ2, EQ2X, will stay put and they will continue developing EQNext or whatever the next will be called and they will survive.
"Due diligence as a consumer". If I apply this template, I would cease to be a consumer in all areas of real life for the most part. 90% of all companies I have done business with in life I do not trust any more than SOE. Do I trust the "big 3" car companies? hell NO. I grew up in Michigan. enuff said. Do I trust Microsoft, or IBM, or Intel, or AMD? No, no, no. I think you get the point.
If you victimize yourself, such as cut yourself, or walk up to a bunch of thugs and asked to be murdered, yes than you are correct... but then you are not a victim, you are a patient, or should be a patient... you got something wrong with you for sure.
Hypothetical here .... But if you chose to business with Watto because he is the only droid vendor in Mos Espa, does that make you an idiot? No, your choices just suck is all. People face this dilemma in real life every day.
Now if you are saying anyone that had a subscription was a victim and deserved what they got? I disagree. These hackers could have gone after Blizzard, or CCP, or another MMO. They went after SOE. I am not convinced other MMOs security is all that much better...better but not that much better. (and I still HATE SOE for the NGE so I am no fanboi, I just enjoy some of their MMOs).
Some will say Blizzard is better... but not to me they are not. I am sick and tired of getting a million emails saying somebody stole my account, and getting a few that they really DID steal my old account.... because to me account security and server security go Hand in Hand. Failure in one is failure in both. In my own point of view Blizzard is no more trustworthy than SOE is. I am not talking about player stupidity with their account security, I am talking about the design of the accounts for WoW... there is something inherently weak for so many account thieves to be targeting WoW accounts. I haven't ever gotten an email saying my CCP account was stolen, or my SOE account was stolen.
So if giving money to SOE is idiotic, so too is giving money to Blizzard, at least to me it is. I really don't see the situation as that black and white.
Do I think it's dangerous to subscribe to any MMO now? Yes I do. It's a part of MMO gaming now.
It doesn't matter what MMO it is so we are all taking risks we perhaps should not be (considering the security issues that hackers are proving all the time, and it isn't just in MMOs or internet gaming).
So it's always a choice. Take a risk with hackers to enjoy this MMO hobby. Just like everywhere else in real life. Life is about Risks and taking Risks.

That's really odd logic. Essentially, if the criminal finds a way to do a crime then he isn't to be blamed.
hmmm, so if you are broken into and stuff in your house is stolen or your family hurt then we should not blame the home intruder we should blame you?
ok gotcha!

SOE won't be finished.
SOE didn't fail to protect the data. I'm not sure if many people understand the term hacking.
I do understand the term.
From what I know, SOE should have done more to protect the data. Not doing more is where I see SOE as possibly being considered liable. SOE discovered many months ago they needed to increase security.
The real criminals here still are the hackers as far as I am concerned. I consider them a type of terrorist, and I don't think my point of view on that is extreme.
As far as SOE being finished, time will tell.

Exactly. The rest tldr. Thanks for this, tho.
Point well made. While SOE isn't the Watto, as it isn't the only game in town, you're absolutely right. I don't truly think that our data is safe with anyone else. The point I will bring up here, is that how many of those other Wattos are seemingly deliberately crapping all over their customers on a regular basis. Is it possible Sony and SOE's business practices made them a target? I guess its not so much a point as something to consider.
But you're absolutely right. None of the customers deserve anything bad just for subbing to a game. I may disagree with giving money to SOE, but that doesn't mean that any ID theft of CC fraud they may incur is warrented by any means. So you're 100% right. I will say this, however. As of yet, nothing I've read has indicated that anyone beyond Sony and SOE has been victimized. And whatever happens there I couldn't care less. I guess in my mind I hope it was more about victimizing the company and not its customers, but that hope has absolutely no valid basis. It just stems from 1 part optimism, 3 parts wanting to see SOE go down.
If it does end up in the laps of the customers, I will retract my "you deserved it" statement to "buyer beware." Which can apply to any game company with our CC info. Or PayPal. Or Amazon. Or whatever. But giving that info to a company who continually and notoriously really pisses people off to no end is more of a gamble in my mind than one that doesn't. Which those may or may not be is a whooooole nother discussion.
I'm just rambling now. But you're absolutely right, Gar. Point made, and taken. Well argued.

SOE arn't finished at all.For me no mmo has held my attention span as long as EQ2 has(over 6 years).Yes i have had breaks from it and tried other mmo's but apart from LOTRO none of them have held my attention for over 1 week. Most less than 1 day.I also have never had bad customer service from them, they have always been quick to reply and I have even had a guide popping up in the middle of an instance to fix a bugged quest that had nothing to do with the instance I was in.
