Sony deserves no sympathy whatsoever, and they are liable due to negligence for not adequately maintaining their security. They were running security that was not only outdated, but they were recently warned by Apache that servers had not been updated with the newest software. Best of all, there was NO FIREWALL installed! It wasn't a "tough break" at all, it was pure incompetence.
Don't take my word for it, watch the news video from msnbc.com.
I hope Blizzard is next, then they can show their respect for their customers by giving everyone a dollar, while continuing to bill them.
If Anything at least SOE has shown that they do well paying back for lost time on their services. I expect them to come out of this with little ill-will except to those who's credit information got snatched.
Maybe now SOE can stop making shitty games ? ever since EQ2 it's been flop after flop, getting progessively worse. I have high hopes for "EQ Next" but not if its some console bullshit.
Doesn't seem like a single person has a clue why all of this is happening in the first place. Sony was not the target of this "attack" at random.
Sony sold a product, they turned around and reduced the functionality of that product. Someone RETURNED that functionality. Sony went after that someone...
Sony was warned that they are wrong for doing that...
If Anything at least SOE has shown that they do well paying back for lost time on their services. I expect them to come out of this with little ill-will except to those who's credit information got snatched.
the things SOE are offering only pay off the days without service.... what about the ones who lost their info? even worst what about if they lose their identiry? in that case i would expect at least a BMW >.> or maybe the judge dictates more than that? sweet
You know, after looking furthur into things, it looks like SoE is getting a lot of false blame for a lot of more recent things. Including this debacle.
In March of 2008 SCEI gained direct control of SoE. SCEI is basically Sony's playstation wing (which of course runs PSN). Now SoE has always been proftable. SCEI is not.
All throughout 2007 and early 2008 SoE was hard at work improving the mess Vanguard was. they were adding max level content, and developing the newbie isle looking towards an official relaunch of sorts. Which never happened.
All of a sudden SoE was shifting resources around, letting people go, and slowing development on even EQ and EQ2. It seems to me not only possible, but fairly likely, that SCEI has been trying to bleed SoE out of their profits and forcing them to scale back their costs.
And of course, a company cutting costs with its main money making entity seems to be the type to ignore security holes.
I could be completely wrong, but I think at least the killing of Vanguard seems to be 100% SCEI and Id be shocked if it werent.
Wait, What? We're supposed to feel bad for one of the most evil corporate entities around? Look at their history. They think their customers are criminals.
Lol I am not saying I disagree but whenever I see someone say that about Sony but apple doesnt garner a mention ? Apples iron fisted approach to control of everything they make coupled with their less than ethical production methods makes them far more evil than Sony IMHO...
If DCUO isnt decimated further by this outage I will be genuinely surprised. They were already taking a hit in subscriptions & with people unable to play for so long they will find alternatives to entertain them and probably find there is little to pul them back to DCUO.
Holy hell this is a Godawful post. What is wrong with you?
Regarding SOE, one can only hope that they learn a big lesson from this. It takes drastic events such as this to cause a stir, and nothing but good can come out of this for the MMO industry. It was going downhill as is, hopefully this is one of the latest happenings to cause an upturn for MMOs.
It's nice to see an article taking some sympathy on the matter, everyone seems focused on rediculing them instead, when the fact of the matter is it really could have happened to anyone.
It's just that Sony gave a reason (serveral over the course of a few years actually) to prompt an attack.
None of this really has me worried though, since I make a point to not own a credit card anymore (damn things!), and also try to fill out accounts with as little real info as possible.
I live on 123 Fake St, in the City of - City, and my postal code is A1B 2C3. You all should move here in the future, it's a pretty nice place :P
Originally posted by Xondar123 I'm sorry, but no, the PSN hack COULD NOT have happened to "any company." Sony is the one to blame for their own lax network security.
Can you be a more specific and provide sources for this 'lax network security' you talk about?
...and SOE is an acronym that hardcore MMO gamers scoff at and nail with derision regularly due to their treatment of a certain beloved IP. So it probably will come as no surprise to many that Sony is having a particularly rough time handling the recent hacking of their customer databases. I mean, it really could have happened to any company, but it happened to Sony and the weirdest part of it all is that people just roll their eyes and say, “It figures.”
I LOLed.
I assume you mean SWG?
Well, no.
I suggest you look at the whole PotBS fiasco.
Even if you took that completely in isolation - it showed complete incompetence and dishonesty.
Hang on a minute here, can we step back. SOE to be trusted again? fair enough they will close the loop holes down plug in the gaps. Yet OUR DATA, our INFORMATION is already out there at the hands of these hackers.
I will never ever purchase an item made by Sony. will never give them my information. Now seriously thinking of starting my own lawsuit here in the UK.
If other companies that offer entertainment services or online services were hacked in that easly why do the big dogs seem to not have these issues.
The facts are out there, if you wish to remain in a state of denial it's your choice. Every selfrespecting online news site, what this one doesn't seem to belong to but where opinions are based on advertising income even worse and obvious then other MMO sites are reporting on their flaws. If it was just a random dude, it wouldn't appear on some big news sites like reuters. So no these aren't some random guys they are interviewing or dragging before congres to elaborate on it.
Guess if all this is so "easy" to be a target off. I guess Facebook servers and Blizzard servers and so forth what hold even more information would be next. We'll speak again when months go by and only poorly secured online services start to fall, guess it was all just "though luck" there aswel.
And if you don't care for your personal information floating around like several and post everything public on things like facebook it's your choice, doesn't mean everyone has that need for exhibitionism and even then it should be by choice, people downplaying all this as no big deal are probably the same kind that find firewalls and anti virus programs and unneeded strain on their system. Cause what possibly bad could happen right?
I do hope that your identity gets stolen one day and that you have to jump to each and every hoop of recovering it all maybe then you'll sing a different song then "cry me river".
This entire article is based on two blatantly false assumptions:
Sony did nothing wrong.
Other companies in the business are equally incompetent.
Sony did do a lot wrong. Their network protection was ridiculously incompetent with not even a basic firewall to secure their servers and completely outdated software across the board. The reason why the hackers got in was simply because of negligence on Sony's part. Not to mention the fact that the customer information and even credit card information was apparently not sufficiently secured, because this should always be stored and secured separately.
Then they move on to even higher levels of epic fail with their press release after the subsequent SOE hacking incident. Some 12000 Europeans have had their credit card / debit card information stolen, and all SOE customers have had their personal information stolen, entirely due to Sony's incompetence. Instead of apologizing for this and informing their wronged customers in a neutral tone, they decide to downplay the incident by stating it along the likes of "only some outdated backup server got hacked, nothing is wrong with the main server, so there's absolutely nothing to worry about". Nothing to worry about? Your negligence has made more than 12000 credit cards and debit cards, not to mention the personal information of 24 million customers, available to blatantly malicious people! The damage has already been done!
I highly doubt that there are any other companies in the industry that are similarly criminally negligent in terms of security precautions. Granted, the fact that it hasn't happened before in the games industry doesn't mean that there aren't any other companies quite so incompetent when it comes to protecting their customer's data. But somehow I doubt the likes of Valve, Microsoft, or Blizzard would be quite so careless when it comes to protecting their customer's information. They certainly seem to care a lot more in terms of how pro-active they are in customer-end security.
In any case, it's ridiculous to see a company with millions of customers screw up in such a major way, particularly when Sony is supposed to be an expert in the field of game copy protection. How ironic is it to see the supplier of the most-used copy protection tools in the games industry (SecuROM) be incapable of protecting their own fucking servers.
At this point I don't see myself owning a Sony console or game ever again. They clearly don't respect their customer's right and treat our information with criminal neglect. They absolutely deserve any law suits, boycotts, and fines they get.
I think this article goes a bit lightheated over the whole situation with Sony as a whole. Sony is a large company. Let's not forget Sony Vaio Laptops, their HDTVs, Blu-Ray, Audio and Video equipment, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, Sony Erricson and so on...
There is a lot of stuff that has happened in the different departments. SOE is a different entity in itself from the Sony Studios that deal with PSP and PS3 for example.

I don't really care about SOE. I say Sony should shut them down because they do no deserve to be called Sony. It's a small market anyway.
I really hope this does not screw up Sony Playstation. It is still the best console out there and if you are serious about it you should get a Playstation as it is much better than an Xbox.

According to a security expert, Sony knew about the security issues yet did nothing about them.
